How to Shop the Meat Department of Your Grocery Store - Thomas DeLauer
I'm going to teach you how to shop the meat department in a way that you haven't been taught before. I'm going to show you the ins, the outs, the nutritional pieces, and just teach you a little bit about specific cuts, and different kinds of fat ribboning, and marbling and everything like that, so you can make a healthy, low carb, high fat choice, whether you're keto or not. It's Sunday morning, which means that we should take the hot rod out and have a little fun, and do this the right way. Let's head on to the grocery store and get us some meat.
The purpose of this video is to be able to go in a little bit more detail in a specific area of the grocery store. I do these videos all the time where I do grocery hauls and I go, a lot of times they end up being an hour and that's a long time. It's a lot of time for people to really commit to watching a video. I figure, okay, let's break them down into little sections of the grocery store where you can understand a little bit more about shopping healthily and doing keto and what kind of cuts of meat and things like that. Anyhow, that's what we're going to do today. We're going to just an Albertsons, which is just a regular neighborhood style, grocery store, supermarket, nothing crazy. Normally I'll do a Costco or an ALDI and kind of play up on the brand, but in this case it's more just about helping you.
All right, so we'll start at the poultry section just so we can get this out of the way. First and foremost on keto, if you're doing any kind of low carb or keto stuff, if you're going to go for a white meat, go for a leaner white meat. Hard part is with the fat that's in poultry, it's a low quality fatty acid profile. Because chicken is normally fed so much in the way of soy, so much in the way of just estrogenic stuff, it all ends up getting stored in their fat.
Beef isn't nearly as bad as chicken in this sense, like chicken and turkey. It makes it tough because you want to eat the fattier cut of meat. You want to eat the thigh, you want to eat the full drumsticks and stuff like that and in moderation, that's okay, but you have to remember if you're going to be eating a lot of it, you're going to be taking in a lot of omega 6's. We want that balance of omega 3 to omega 6 to be much better than that. I usually recommend staying away from this and if you can, if you're going to get this kind of stuff, try to get at least an organic form of the chicken thigh and drumsticks and stuff like that.
Now I want to pick a quick mention on turkey. If you're looking at turkey versus chicken, chicken is generally better than turkey. Turkey is loaded with a bunch of hormones and loaded with a bunch of antibiotics. The conditions in which they raise turkey is much worse than chicken, generally speaking. You're going to be better off getting some chicken than you are turkey, even with the leaner cuts. The other thing that's important to note is people don't always realize this and this stuff, it looks gross for people, but you can get the the livers and the organs and stuff and it's actually pretty darn inexpensive. Chicken liver, beef liver is going to be a little higher quality, but it's important to know this stuff because if you're looking, if you're doing keto, if you're doing any kind of fasting, this is going to be probably one of the healthiest ways for you to get minerals, but I don't want to gross you out on this video. We'll do a whole separate video on that at some point
Got ourselves a little meat. Hopefully got a little education out of this. Try to keep it simple. Again, if you have ideas for future videos like this where we just do little sections of the grocery store, please do put them down in the comment section below because it's really nice to do these quick little digestible pieces where I can go into a little bit more depth without boring someone for four hours on a full grocery haul video. In fact, if you want more information, just on specific cuts of meat and things like that too, put them down in the comment section below. As always, make sure you're keeping it locked in here on my channel. I'll see you in the next video.

I don't know if you'll even read this but I hope so. I'm doing Keto and intermittent fasting after being dx with NAFLD, so i'm trying to get my liver healthy. Side benefit was I've so far lost 60 lbs. However, I'm finding this soooooo expensive and unfortunately I am on a very low and fixed income. My question is how can I eat Keto that's affordable and healthy?

@@MusicInMotion_67 I would focus on what’s most important and skip what you can’t afford. Make sure when you are spending the extra money for your health you get the most for your buck. Example- Buy Grass Fed Ground Beef 90% lean and maybe skip on getting pasture raised chicken breast. The reason? Beef has many more vitamins and nutrients then chicken does, it contains more fat (especially the ground beef) then the chicken breast and is therefore more important to buy grass Fed because all the toxins and bad stuff get stored into the animal’s fat. You want to try to spend the money on quality animals when they are high in fat but something like chicken breast that is very lean you can buy conventional. Ground beef is actually one of the cheapest cuts and it’s super good for you! Another good buy is to buy whole chickens pasture raised- about $13 a chicken. But you can use the bones to make bone broth and you get more for your money this way. A rule of thumb is the best prices come from the least amount of work the butcher has to do. Don’t stress about it though- do what you can afford. You can still eat healthy Keto without buying “perfect” meat.

Same here. My Dad turned 91 on July 4th; I saw him that day, and the next. Talked to him at 10:30 A.M. on July 9th, he felt good, alert, said he'd call around 5 P.M. like usual. I get a call at 6:30 P.M. with his number on call display. I answer, "Hi Dad"; but a nurse from the home he was at answers and asks if I'm sitting down. As soon as she asked that I knew he had passed. He had a sudden heart attack while sitting in his wheelchair. We were very close. So yeah I know exactly where you, Thomas, & others are coming from. In regards to the video, interesting info on the fat content & style of meats. I do love & buy ribeye, & prime rib steaks at times, along with blade steak - very tender & juicy but much more economical than ribeye. Love lean ground beef, & a combo if lean ground beef + ground pork. Eating about 90% carnivore I like the flavour of the fat from the meat moreso than the flavour of added fats. Although I do use ghee, tallow, or coconut oil at times to cook leaner cuts of meat in. Will eat more chicken breast (whole & ground). Love lamb, pork loin, pork shoulder & ribs (But will reduce the frequency), LOVE bacon. Will check out pork belly. Thanks for the great video Thomas.

This is helpful, thanks Thomas! What I got out of this: 1) Go for "no antibiotics ever," making sure the word "ever" is included. 2) "Fed vegetarian diet" doesn't mean anything. 3) "Grass finished" is more important and more worth paying extra for than "grass fed." Both is ideal, but hard to find in regular supermarkets. 4) Go for red meats with fat that has more of "ribboned" (aka clustered on one side) rather than marbled appearance, because this indicates a higher quality fat profile. 5) Bison tends to be a good choice because there are more strict standards to what they can be fed.

I put on 30 lbs in 3 months, I was depressed and constantly felt tired and awful. Upon discovering your channel I decided to make some lifestlye changes. Started doing IF and Keto this week. I've lost 10 lbs in four days (Probably water if I have learned anything lol) Much less inflammation, and heart burn (which was a daily occurance.) I feel good, and I want to keep going.

Translation: At the grocery store, get the pork for the best quality/value in meat. Pork actually has a better profile and more potassium than beef anyway If you need steak/beef, buy it from an producer who sells only grass finished. like US Wellness/Butcher Box Bacon: No sugars, or less than 1 g, and no nitrates
