I follow certain channels and like to support these women, but I am so tired of videos on Shein and Temu hauls. Recently for the first time my daughter ordered a few graphic t-shirts from Shein. She washed them and wore them. After that she started having severe allergy symptoms with her nose and eyes. Symptoms lasted a week. I shared one of your videos. No more Shein.

As I watch this there's a flat sheet from a thrift store sitting on my table with a pattern on top of it. I loved the peach color and pattern of the sheet, but didn't need the sheet. It's going to become a boho peasant dress this afternoon. A perfect cotton dress for summer in the Southern U.S. You're inspiring, keep up your passion!!

Simple things can improve your look. I redo all hems on bought clothes. I refix buttons before wearing. I dye clothes when their colours fade. There are SO MANY things you can do to extend the life of your wardrobe and keep looking good and reduce your consumption. Only ever buy clothes seen and tried.

I live on a very limited budget and sad to admit i have shopped from of the fast fasion shops. Frankly, there are times i cannot afford even these shops.. So, recently i took 5 pieces of clothing i already own but needed hemming or just some adjustments to a tailor. Now i am able to add my linen skirt, my linen wide leg pants, my cotton linen blend denim shirt and 2 pairs of dress pants back into my wardrobe. The cost of the repairs and adjustments cost less than $10.00 per item. I am very happy with my tailor and my choices. 😊

So pleased you mentioned the negative side of donating clothes to charity. I worked in waste disposal and the tonnages of donated clothes that are sorted for different markets and baled, and sold blind, to traders is huge. Around 60% of the clothes in these bales have no market value and they are damaged/soiled/stained/torn and end up on unofficial landfill sites (Like beaches). I was a sorter of donated goods, and the worst donation was a pair of knickers with the stained sanitary pad still fixed inside. If you would not buy the clothes you are donating - then do not donate them.

I saw a documentary about the pollution of some rivers in India due to the fabric manufacture for fashion. The air is also contaminated by the fumes of the chemicals used to treat and colour the fabrics. As you can imagine, the poorest live nearby. The extra clothes rejected by us are not polluting our immediate environment/country, but they are shipped mostly to Africa where they are sold by the kilos. Inside these large bundles, very few clothes can be sold to the locals because the vast majority of them are just rags. Thanks, Frédérique, for highlighting the problem of over consumption.

I have so many thoughts about this video and concept. First of all, I’m glad you are doing a fashion video even if it is very different! I agree with you about fast fashion. I’ve been trying to shop sustainably for a few years now but I still find myself buying stuff. I just went abroad for three weeks to two different climates and I took only a carry-on. I wore all my clothes on repeat and did laundry and I felt like I had plenty of clothes. I’d love to see some videos on the best way to build a capsule wardrobe out of good quality clothes that we will wear 30 times! Thanks in advance!

It’s easy- STOP buying it. Use what you have. Most of only wear 10% of what we own. I am getting out of debt. Once I’m debt free I’ll buy 1-2 things a year from ethical brands to wear for life. You feel terrific when your actions align with your beliefs. My Nan had pants she wore from the age of 18 till she died at 82. Now that’s the ideal. Love your channel ❤

When it comes to learning how to use a sewing machine for crafting or repairing… it just takes practice. The more you do it, the better you get. No one is an expert to first time you try something. I now make all my clothes, I love them and cherish them, and there’s so many creators in the sewing community online who are doing so many wonderful and creative things. There’s also creators following trends and showing you what patterns and hacks to look at, and also repurposing, recycling. It’s also adjusting to what and who you follow: I now only follow fashion trends for inspiration, not to buy. But I follow a lot more sewing creators on social media, because they inspire me more to make and to create. In fact I watched videos from this community for a year, before I finally bought a sewing machine for $100.00 of which I’m still sewing with 3 years later. The simpler the machine, the less frightening it is to learn to use it. Buy the budget model with only a few dials and buttons.

That it’s so true. And it can be applied to any topic really. The thing is to not give up and continue learning. And I agree, especially as a beginner, the less complicated the sewing machine is, the easier is to learn how to use it. You can always upgrade when you feel it doesn’t meet your standards anymore. I just got mine repaired and I’m so excited to start sewing again. It’s been some years now. ☺️

@Maevellle How marvellous, I wish you all the best picking up sewing again. It's a lot easier to get into or get back into sewing now than it was in previous years. There's so many fabulous indie pattern makers with fabulous instructions like holding your hand. And many of the Big 4 commercial pattern makers, there is likely to be a sew-along someone has made on KZread. And if not, there's usually always a video for a sewing tip or trick or skill to get you unstuck. Enjoy😊

I'm trying to find ways to upcycle my unworn clothes into home decor, or making a new clothing item. It's so hard to alter your mind set out of the need to buy more to fit our needs, but we can all do it.

Excellent video, Frédérique! I take sustainability seriously, and I value my money. This is what I do: - I buy classic styles from sustainable brands in natural materials (silk, linen, cotton, cashmere, ramie). I know that they cost more up-front, but I also know that I’ll have the item for at least 5 years because the classic style is timeless and never goes out of style. So, my cost per wear works out to pennies. - If I want something “trendy”, I buy something from the thrift store to refashion. A tip for those who sew - the thrift stores have TONS of cotton bedsheets that can be repurposed as fabric, and in the US, they have TONS of men’s dress shirts in cotton, linen, or silk because most workplaces are now “casual” or “business casual”. These shirts can easily be flipped to lovely women’s wear. - I also have vintage luxury designer pieces that I either inherited from my French Grand-Mère or I purchased myself. The vintage style doesn’t look like a costume, and I often get compliments on the pieces when I wear them. - I do treat myself with getting some things custom-made in a classic style. Not only does it look amazing because it fits my figure, but it inspires me to maintain my figure to make sure it continues to fit for years to come. If my body shape changes due to circumstances outside of my control, I take it to the tailor to get altered.

I appreciate the turnaround with being more mindfull of the clothes you wear and for you to share it on here! I hope soon all fast fashion and ugly clothing trends get cancelled. Who needs a huge closet when you barely wear any of it? I shrunk my closet quite a lot, but still most clothes im not wearing because I cannot be bothered with ironing, or the seasons don't allow me to wear much of the clothes, yet I have a ton of tops laying around that I wear maybe a handfull of times a year.. 90% of the times I wear office clothes or at home simple leggings and an oversized shirt cuz it's easy to move when cleaning the house or go straight to gym. But having something around for when having a date or something is very usefull😅

About 90% of what I own is used and it's been a great journey, not to mention cost cutting experience. Fast fashion has never been something I do. I wear most of what I own until it's worn out or I'm just tired of wearing it after many years of use. It's a great skill to teach kids too.

Another great video Frederique! Merci! Yes, I would love to have you do a video on how clothing can be toxic to our bodies. I just ordered a copy of "Fatal Conveniences" by Darin Olien. I watched an interview with him and knew I needed to become more aware of the things he's written and now speaking about. I've already decided to focus on buying at least organic cotton underwear moving forward (unless I need something more VPL for more formal occasions). We'll see what else I decide to do after I read the book and do more research. The health of the planet and of ourselves is of paramount importance. The fashion industry is one of the most polluting out there, so we need to be especially mindful of everything you're talking about in this video. Thank you!!!

I guess the fact they all do “Eco” or “Sustainable” ranges is a red flag in itself, it suggests the rest of the stuff isn’t! Also great tip about dying washed out dark clothes to revitalise them, I will definitely be trying this on some of my dark clothes that are looking tired, but are otherwise good. Would love a video on the perils of synthetic fabrics.

In California, we have location where we can donate clothes and only women whom have gone through rehab can shop there for free to get clothes and accessories for a job or just life. More recently, I connected with a Pastor nearby that helps house women and children that leave their house due to ABUSE. They leave with nothing so they need everything!!! Dishes, clothing, toys, furniture, etc. He only accepts gently used items, except for under garments and personal care like tooth brushes, etc.

Things I'm trying this year to break up with fast fashion once and for all: - curating / critically assessing my current style, lifestyle and wardrobe to work out what I REALLY NEED - buying secondhand first (I volunteer at a secondhand store, and manage a traveling suitcase of women's clothes for my local Buy Nothing group, which both help with this) - not treating shopping, or browsing clothing sites, as a hobby but critically looking for the items to fill wardrobe gaps - shopping my wardrobe, upcycling and redesigning things I have, before contemplating buying - where I can't get what I need / quality items secondhand, purchasing from local, ethical and sustainable suppliers even if it costs more

I shared it on facebook & did a screenshot of the charts to add to the comments. I've been getting more selective in what I buy & while I have bought them, I've never really been a fan of screen printing on tops because the design never really lasts very long, the majority of my 'Wisconsin Badgers' items, I selected embroidered rather than screen printed for just that reason. Oh, 'St. John's Bay' is the brand I get at JCPenny's for crew & v-neck t-shirts, 100% cotton.

Ok, I work really hard to avoid green washing. I do buy some things at Fast Fashion - Black Tanks or T :basics. I don't drive, so I buy my clothes in person to avoid the carbon footprint and worker exploitation of the shipping process. I wash my clothes in cold & hang to dry for maximum care. Every article of clothing in my closet earns it's keep. I do buy some items thrift, but I keep my thrift donations to a minimum. And remind my self there were 3 big oil spills in a month this summer, as well as an exposed industrial toxic waste dumping . The enviornment isn't going to heck because I like my yoga wear & can use the same pants & tanks & bras for 3 years. Great Vidi 😎☕💋

But what is most important: Buying eco-friendly clothes in colours I don't really like and so not wear so often - maybe never, or to buy something less ethical that I wear to absolute pieces? I do look for pre-loved first of course!😍❤

Thank you for a fantastic video! I’ve avoided the fast fashion for years but occasionally have picked up an item to two from them. No more! I live in Hawaii so it’s hard to find clothes period. However, its always warm here. So I’ve learned I really don’t need a lot. I love getting creative switching things up for a new look. I’m sharing this video on Facebook and Instagram where I have 5,000 followers on each. We have to get the word out in a non confrontational way so people will listen. Why is this crap even allowed to be sold in the US is beyond me!

Yes I would like to watch a video on toxic materials. For the coming fall and winter, I'll buy tights that are made out of Econyl. It's not perfect, as it doesn’t necessarily mitigate the release of microfibres into our oceans, as the recycled nylon fabric is still plastic, but it's a step in the right direction, I hope 😀Best wishes from Switzerland ♥

I've completely converted to buying all my clothes 2nd hand. I now only buy really good quality fabric garmets. I get them tailored if they don't fit perfect. And I only buy underwear and socks new 😊.

I love that you said, you need to wear an item 30 times or it’s not a good investment. I have to challenge and keep myself accountable to wear the items that I buy.

My 100% Linen H&M pants used to be black and after 1 wash they turned grey, so I ordered black fabric dye and fabric dye sealer, and now it is perfect after steaming and ironing it looks like new, I will wash H&M pieces only by hand as it is really not great quality.

Thanks for this video 🙂 It does make sense. I do target classic/ balanced appearance/ outfits and I try to avoid impulse purchases. With me it's been a while, and this is how I live. Did your move to Bali trigger you to change your way of thinking, or did this happen beforehand?

One class I hated in school was sewing, little did I know it would be my most used class being under 5 feet I shorten all my clothes and dresses that I tire of cut into skirts and tops for a new look, and I love second hand boutiques and dying clothes for new looks too, love the new glasses where are they from?

Hi!! Thank u for the channel. I have leaned a lot today. I know how to saw. I recommend KZread. There r wonderful channels about sewing. You can learn a lot from them. I even learned to make lined jackets. Borrow a sewing machine to start. If you can do it invest in a good sewing machine of your own. It is very rewarding. Also use natural textiles like cotton, linen, viscose. Have fun. Thanks for the channel.
