A year late here, but really appreciate the video! Have been back time and time again. Have been exploring the capabilities of my iPhone rather than splurging on a camera as I move into filming the keyboards I build, so you've been an absolute lifesaver. Fantastic presentation, from info, to sound, to edits. Thanks a bunch!

I really hope as time goes on smartphone manufacturers (Samsung, Apple, etc.) find a way to let users control their aperture. They place so much focus (pun not intended) on the cameras but even offer pro features.

I know this is an old comment but I do agree. Samsung has kind of done it before with their variable aperture. They are coming up with a 1 inch sensor for smartphones and if they can add a variable aperture, it will be like a dream come true because you can do so much more. My S21 Ultra is stuck at f1.8 which is a good aperture but imagine if it could go down to f1.4 or even f1.2 and f2.8 during day time.

Great video (as always) on a much awaited subject. Though I personally feel that if I need a specific effect and a desired output, I will certainly be using instruments that are dedicated for that specific cause, like Dslr's or professional movie cameras for that matter. Smartphones have come a long way and there will certainly be more advanced functions and possibilities in the coming years. But at least for right now, as far as smartphones are concerned, we have to compromise certain things and use them to the best of their abilities. We cannot always get everything from a single device, unless the coming technological advances brings us to a point where everything we need comes in one single bundle of joy. :)

Many viewers hear from you about smartphone photography for the first time. To your credit, you do not devote this segment to iPhone, only, but to the general smartphone. We especially like the links you provide to Ulanzi, since budget is still an issue in this market. Also helpful are the software applications you mention which help introduce soft-fogus/depth-of-field "adjustment", if not at the level of a depth-of-field adapter. * We have a Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit, an older phone but with lens typical of most smartphones. Does anyone make a DOF adapter? What sort of lenses are available (understanding that device communication between body and lens is not usually possible)

The same unsharpness. No matter what we do it stays so unsharp. Why is this? Is there something wrong or is this quality decrease normal and to be expected?

It's down to the focusing screen they use in the adpaters, and that fact it's static. I used to used 35mm adapters when they first came out and the addition of a vibrating motor to the focus screen frame eased some of the softness. You also have to take into account you're shooting basically a projected image so you'll get a drop in both image IQ and an increased chromatic abberation. The only advice I would give these days if someone wants to shoot shallow DOF, use a camera capable of it anything else is not going to deliver the same quality
