I would suggest either a note pad, or keeping notes in your phone about times where audio, or visual issues to edit around might occur if noticed live.

No 'arguably' about it. Video supports audio... NOT the other way around. People notice bad audio. They are much more forgiving of bad video. I am in the middle of a live, multi cam music festival, and everyone keeps mentioning how good the audio is... With no mention of how great the video is. But no news is good news. If no one is complaining, your video is good. Thanks for this!

This is the core of my business so I use Atomos recorders to capture the video. Because I use GH5’s each camera also records a backup, which is 10 bit 4K.

Question for you ... Apology if this is already answered ... TASCAM ... (I love that thing).... Did you hook house XLR audio into TASCAM and then hookup TASCAM OUT into your primary camera? Or did the audio engineer provided you two sets of XLR outs? One for TASCAM and one for camera. Your setup resembled closed to what I had to do for one of my shoot where I was one person operation...and I also needed to have a backup audio. Thank you for your response and time. Great information. Much appreciated.

This was so long ago I don’t recall, but taking a standard 3.5mm output from the recorder passing into the camera is a common way to get a clean in-camera recording. However if there’s a problem with the recorder or the feed to the recorder, then both audio recordings will have the issue. A safer way is to get a unique feed from the board for each the recorder and the camera, but that’s not usually available.

This was great and very thorough. Watched it in full but you may want to clarify that this isn't a video about a live streaming event. I would also add that editing on the spot with an ATEM switcher is a live saver! No need/minimum editing in post with you are locally switching angles and slides at the event. Great video.

thank you so much for this , i have the convergent design and i have not used it but now i am about to use it.

I record myself multicam when I perform on the piano. I have to go through all of these steps everytime, so it's nice to have a complete overview like this. I'll probably watch it a couple more times. Thanks for the awesome video. I'm jealous of your current setup with the box cameras and remote recording. I'm thinking of getting a blackmagic quad hdmi recorder (and a sonnet chassis) so I can get all the recordings straight to my computer without dealing with ingest and hitting record on every camera.

@@photojoseph Thanks for the reply. It's gotta be 4k, that's why the Atem Iso's don't interest me, and why I got Gh4/5 cameras that can downconvert in realtime to my Atem while recording 4k internally, when I need to livestream. . Actually I think my GX8 can do it too, surprisingly. it's just a lot of details to keep track of, and hours of ingest afterwards. Luckily cards are cheap nowadays so i can get over an hour of record time without too much worry. I think I'm going to switch to DC power just to eliminate one more possibility of failure. It's a testament of the quality ofnyour content that a long video from 4 years ago is still relevant and full of helpful advice.

Did my first live event on the weekend. Couple things I learned. Use manual focus, or your cameras will focus on people waking in front of it. The next thing I learned is that using the house audio didn't sync perfectly with my cameras from the back of the room because of the sound delay, minor tweaks required in post. Finally I found that the projector screens were showing flicker at double shutter speed, so I had to drop SS down to actual record frame rate. It actually wasn't to bad. Thanks for all your tips included here!

Great check list. I have mines on paper. I Check it like a dummy every time before I leave the house. Most stimulating lesson was forgetting the XLR mic because of overconfidence I did not do the check list. Then was the reinforcing lesson #2 when I drove 2 hours without A Media Card. (lol). Yes, this video is real. (lol)

Great video. Have done 100+ event recordings with 4 cameras ( no 4 covering the audience ) and learnt the trade by myself and doing every mistake possible. Now everything runs very smoothly and my checklist is 98% the same as yours which means I probably do most things right now. Have had camera overturned and destroyed by one of the participants and one camera being stolen during the shoot. But event filming is fun - as fun as being a youtuber in front my own camera. :-) Great video.

Thank you, for this in-depth review of the whole process and probable mistakes ;) Just wanted to add that, if you've got the possibility (for instance, with the Tascam DR 60d Mk II, that you're using) to back up the main audio recording with an additional -6 dB to -12 dB track, it can also save one's ass / bacon ! (more especially in theater performances, where the voice dynamics can get particularly strong). By the way, this very recorder accepts usb external power, which makes it great for long runs, without worrying about power issues... Thomas, from France

The timer suggestion was for the memory cards, where you know exactly how much time you have left. I did recommend AC adapters where possible as well. Thanks for watching!

This is a great tutorial! BTW, what kind of gears do you recommend for shooting LIVE wedding ceremonies? I've browsed many other videos, although some of the gears require a direct power adapter, for outside weddings, sometimes there are no direct power plugs. So I would like to have your suggestions if possible on what kind of gears I should invest for :) Thank you!

Everything was smooth and very understandable, I don’t know what you are talking about...

What does a person do when the "house" doesn't know their board? Or too darn afraid to let you piggy back? The church where I'm constantly recording doesn't know the difference in direct audio and ambient audio. Their projects are so amateur it isn't funny. The audio is awful. I'm at my wits end. THEY DONT EVEN HAVE AN ACTUAL SOUND MAN.
