    Additionally, Suzanne, is there a way to quote shipping for an order that ships in more than 1 box because it's too big to put into one box? Like a set of antique table service for 12. I want it properly protected....of bubble wrap....thus, several boxes.

    ebay notified me regarding the shipping label glitch on 6/18 & 6/19 that I would be refunded for the labels that could not be printed. Last night I contacted ebay customer service about a related issue and found out that there are more glitches that have been affecting my performance report. Packages where I witness the scans by the USPS are not being recorded in the system. I have 15 items that show no scan on my dashboard. Most are from 2 days in May and 2 from the latest glitch in June. Since there are so many sellers involved in this now, ebay will finally remove these from our performance data. The problem is much deeper than this. I have many more packages that do not show tracking at all until the item reaches the buyers local PO. I usually don't know about these until a buyer contacts me asking when am I going to ship because there is no tracking information. Could this be a major issue with Guaranteed Delivery? I think it will. Mike S.

    I think the reason it's so confusing is that there are tons of videos out there where the sellers tell you how to ship but it's wrong. A lot of sellers ship with shortcuts. I've seen plenty ship bigger items in the flat rate priority envelopes. Stuffing in. They teach other sellers this as well. That's what threw me off. I figured if they were showing you it was right. wrong. lol. Suzanne will teach the right way trust that.

  • @SuzanneAWells

    It is best to put a general statement in your listing that you will combine shipping, and after the customer places their order you send them a combined invoice. You can't possibly know how much someone will buy or where it will go, so you can't figure the cost until AFTER they have purchased the items.

    You can ship 1st class (thru ebay) up to 16 oz. Some people ship blank media via media mail, which is a no-no. Blank dvds, vhs, cassettes are not eligible for media mail, although I did order some recently and were shipped successfully that way. You might get away with it but if the PO inspects the parcel your customer might get a nasty postage due notice.

  • @SuzanneAWells

    Yes, lots of violations using media mail. What people don't realize is that the buyer is going to end up paying the price - and misusing supplies and the USPS results in the seller looking bad. I mean, it is really worth a few bucks to get a negative or an unhappy buyer? Nope.

    I just need clarification on the big picture when it comes to calculated shipping. Ex: I list item A for $25 with calculated shipping. Buyer purchases item A, pays the $25 + $10 shipping that was calculated based on their zip code. Do I receive the full $35 and have to pay $10 to the post office when I ship the item or do I pay the $10 when I print the label? Ok, wait...I think I just figured it out...but responses are welcome!!! Thank you Suzanne for all you do!

    The last section when listing an item for sale is 'Shipping Details'. There you select your Payment, Shipping, and Return Policy. These are all created under My Ebay/Account/Business Policies. Payment policy is Paypal and Return Policy is 30 Days. Those are easy. But Shipping Policies must be created for every method imaginable. First Class, Standard, Media, Parcel Select, Flat Rate and for all the different weights. Am I missing something? Doesn't everyone have to set these up initially?

  • @SuzanneAWells

    @SuzanneAWells

    I guess I am missing something. I just use calculated shipping and pick which class of mail. If it is a flat rate, I choose the option that works for the item. I have never had to set up any policies.

    Size Definitions: Length is always the longest dimension and is measured in inches. Height is the side that is perpendicular to the length and is measured in inches. Width is the remaining side that is also perpendicular to the length and is measured in inches. Girth is the distance around the thickest part of the remaining non-length sides and is measured in inches. For rectangular packages, Girth would be Height multiplied by two plus Width multiplied by two. For cylindrical packages, Girth would be the circumference of the cylinder.

    What about repurposed boxes? My neighbor gives me a lot of boxes that come from other companies, and I have shipped items in a used box (an Amazon box, for example) but covered it in brown craft paper. You mentioned in the video that boxes should not be covered. Does that mean I can only re-use plain, brown boxes? I have no problem buying boxes, I thought any box could be used for shipping, just cover the original non-eBay name.

    Yes, please do a video on this. I had a multiple quantity listing, I fouled up and did not put shipping for additional items. Buyer purchased two, but only got charged shipping for one (small item), however, two items brought weight up to priority, I, of course, took the hit, not buyers fault that I'm an idiot. Going forward, I charge same shipping cost for each additional. I don't want to do that really. I would be happy to combine, but how does one list to have a charge for just one purchase, but, allow for multiple purchases? One cannot guess what quantities another will buy, so you can't list it that way. Confused :/ Thank you.

    When a buyer wins multiple items, I reweigh the combined lots together with my default "estimated packaging" (a Priority Mail box and a section of newspaper), and send an invoice for the combined lots using that combined weight. Then I reweigh each packed box just before generating the shipping label via eBay Shipping. I do calculated shipping for the actual shipping cost + $1.00/box handling. Since most of my items ship Media Mail, there is usually a few ounces' worth "fudge factor" built in. If the actual shipping cost is over $1.00 less than the shipping paid by the buyer, I do a partial refund for the difference (a pleasant surprise for most buyers!). I usually have more than enough boxes to ship everything from items, so I just need to buy tape, bubble wrap and bubble mailers. For items which can't ship via Media Mail, I always include both Parcel Select and Priority Mail rates, and I compare Priority by weight with Priority flat rate to the buyer's destination before deciding which to use.
