How To Ship an IBM Selectric Typewriter, Packing, Mailing, Shipping a Fragile Machine

I just got word the Red IBM in this video arrived & is working perfect ! I have recorded my method that I have been successfully using for some time now for packing an IBM for shipment.
How NOT to pack an IBM Video . . . . . . here . . . . • How NOT to pack, ship,...
This method will work for the Selectric 2 & 3's also, still just make sure, if you use the cord wrap method, that its very tight & even. Been using Fed-x, but I don't have any direct information that any particular shipper is better at handling fragile items that any other, so your choice. Marking box "Fragile" is futile, But do mark with arrows, right side up, on all 4 sides & mark top, top. Hope this method helps Selectrics survive shipping breakage that is so so common.

tHANKYOU pHOENIXtYPEWRITER !!! I used your packing technique and it worked a treat. I also did the same with my Remington Rand 101, and its plastic case survived! Can't thank you enough. If you live in Australia and follow this procedure, hopefully you don't have to pay for the foam pieces. They are expensive at about $2 per liter at Officeworks! Unfortunately for me, the previous owner had already cracked the top of the return key, and left all of the perished insulation/sound dampening foam in the machine so there is a lot of work to do.

Thanks for the info! Side note if you twist the shrink wrap it makes it even stronger on that hold.

Nice video. I want one of these one day, love the sound of the typewriter. Typing was one of my favorite and most valuable classes that I took in high school, because I had to skip P.E. for a semester after surgery. I think I was the only boy in the class, so good opportunity to meet girls! Then I had a smith corona electric typewriter through college, never got a chance to own a selectric, but my mother's friend had one, so I played with that one when we visited.

This makes me amazed that my Selectric II made its way to the thrift store I got it at just fine - the machine works a treat! Now I know if / when I move how to pack mine to ensure she doesn't get messed up... but I'm certain I would make a special trip for my typewriters anyway so long as I don't move cross-country which IS planned in the future.... I didn't think they had such a point of possible damage in shipping but seeing it wiggle makes you think again! Mine doesn't wiggle much at all but of course I would never take changes on her!

Beaut! THANKS for posting this video. GREAT! Makes a lot of sense, and I can now see how yr 'cord wrap' technique works. Other nice touches like the lid pressure spread and keyboard bubble cover. I will be using all of these. PRICELESS. If it took you 20 mins, I'll allocate double. Hey PheonixTypewriter.Com I have googled searched "Selectric specs' , 'Selectric weight dimensions' etc, without any success. There are some specs out there but they are incorrect. There are weights ranging from 13 lbs to 40 lbs being quoted. Absolutely nothing in terms of dimensions. Err, you wouldn't happen to know eh... ? 8)

I have this same model (same colour too!) I'm based in the UK but wondered if there is a way to convert the plugs on these to work in the UK without a power converter? Mine burnt out a while back so it's in the loft but would love to get it working again, I can't seem to find any UK repair shops who can help unfortunately I'm hoping one day I'll get someone who can get it working again! 👍

I don't know..... but these must be 26" wide (24" is common but will jam the selectric knobs) Something close to this would be ideal, 26 x 20 x 12

The Selectric I under the bench with the BLUE keytops, is it for sale?

Well, I do have an offer if repainted in white already, But, I have to 1st determine if I can confidently repair the selectric one & repaint for a reasonable $$ amount. I got it for the blue key-tops only, it's an early sel one & many many improvements were incorporated in later versions. I initially just wanted to transfer them to one of the nice low mileage Selectric 2's I have, they never came with that option so would be neat to do. I will know soon, going to the powder coaters next week to pick up a finished project, finally decision about then.

This is a great video but I’d be reluctant to give it to anyone to follow because you basically ruined it at the end by not having enough foam peanuts to cover the top. You consider someone watching this for 24 min is not going to be fully focused on it by the end and at that point what they see is going to be retained better than what you said about needing more peanuts. If you have the time please do this over and end it the right way. It’s an incredibly useful video that can’t be used because of how it ends.
