Thanks so much for this SoftBrake information. I am in the process of switching over to the heel/toe shifter, linkage system. I know what it's like to be stranded and I finally feel secure knowing that, with appropriate maintenance of my equipment, that will not happen to me again. I love the quality of Softbrake products, but I found it very difficult to get the extended shifter arm on to the shaft. I had to remove the shaft and had to pound the hell out of it with a rubber mallet to get the shifter Arm on the shaft. I called Softbrake and they said that was normal due to the powder coating. I thought that was a bit strange, but it all worked out and thankfully, I did not scratch anything in the process. Yours seemed to go on so easily.

I slide mine in and out few times before final install. Maybe powder coated guy got a bit generour on your item. Glad it worked out at the end. After complete install I believe it shouldn't give you any more trouble as coating will adjust.
