How to Sharpen a Knife - Easy

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Did you know most knife related accidents are caused by dull blades?! A sharp knife is in fact safer and more enjoyable to use than a dull one. It will allow you to chop, slice, and dice your way through just about anything with little effort!
In this video, I demonstrate two popular ways to sharpen a chef's knife. These methods can be applied to just about any kitchen knife and certain utility knives.
Method 1: Electric sharpener
Method 2: Whetstone

You can buy a tile at Lowe’s, etc. and a sheet of 80 grit wet/dry sandpaper and wet the sand paper, place it on the tile and save yourself $40-$50 on the truing stone. Run your Japanese Waterstone on the sandpaper until the pencil marks are gone.

This was super helpful. Quick question though--I've got a manual, two step knife sharpener that looks like a smaller version of the electric one you used. Can I get similar results with something like this or is it worth it to upgrade?

Certainly right about dull tools being unsafe. For kitchen sharpening, I get my best edge from the unglazed edge on the bottom of a coffee mug. Of course I don't don't seem to be able to get any corporate sponsorship for saying this.

Is the process the same for santoku knives that have sort of scalloped sides? Also, what about sharpening serrated knives? Thanks in advance!

Yes, same rules apply for santokus with dimpled sides. Depending on your knife, the dimples may or may not be close to the blade's edge. Chances are there's a bit of clearance, which means you can safely sharpen the blade without worrying about the dimples. Either way, sharpening using a whetstone or electric sharpener should be fine. Sharpening a serrated knife requires a slightly different process since each valley (gullet) needs to be sharpened individually.

Shave the hair on the back of your fore arm to check sharpness.
