An old pipe maker passed on 1n 1950, his widow gave us some of his unfinished pipe bowls and the most valuable thing I ever got. A huge chunk of carnauba wax. He used rouge to polish and then the carnauba to finish. I still have 90 percent of that big bar of wax. Thank you for the other steps. I just ordered a number of woods for knife scales. I have no belt sanders just an orbital, a mouse type on the vibratory tool, and all sorts of round paper cylinders for drills and a Moto Tool. And of course there is always the good old Armstrong method.

I forged my first blades today and they didn't turn out so good. I didn't waste my time putting handles on them and I was really looking forward to doing it. These are from combat abrasives. They haven’t been great with their customer service with me in the past so I don’t promote them much but these buffing wheels are great

This is pretty much what I do, but I have been adding a few swipes on 3000 after 2000. Not sure if it makes a difference, but it is quick. And I only buff in 2 steps. Pink scratch-less and clean buffing wheel.

Love the knives you make, nice style with an emphasis on usability. So Manu purple make knives for show that would be hard to actually use. Do you blue the spine and such before going to the buffing step? I'm assuming the compound would make it hard and spotty to do afterwards.

Yes each wheel has its specific compound. Alot of micarta I’ll just use wax or oil on it

I’ve done a few bolt on handles but honestly I dont really see the point in it except it looks kindof cool. When I start doing bigger batch work with cncd handles I’ll be doing them that way but I prefer fixed scales

Good tips for handle. Like your video lessons. I noticed a portable Milwaukee band saw in the background and have a question. What blade brand and tooth count do you use to cut out you metal blades?

I primarily use the 12/14 tpi Milwaukee blades. They seem to last the longest

My buffers only take a certain amount before bogging down unfortunately. So I’d say medium pressure

Excellent video. Thank you. Believe it or not. I am doing plastic handles… I know I know but I’m committed. Perhaps when I get ready for sales I’ll show you what I’m doing. My plan is to do pretty much everything you’re doing except I’m going to be slowing down the buffer. I end up with a lot of blackening with the buffer and I’ve got a clean it off. What am I doing wrong? I’m guessing too much compound.

You forgot to mention how often you stop to de-dust your hands and arms. Lol I like these steps with aromatic woods, carbon fiber is nasty and bone or mammoth molar is atrocious! Hours of effort, for sure. And then there’s the sheath… kudos to a job well done! Thank You for, well, talking too much! 😅

At the end. You mentioned you buffed it. What did you buff it with? The normal colored compounds on your buffing wheels and just go through the progression? It looks shiney, did you use lacquer or some sort of varnish or sealant on the handle knife or is that just simply buffed with with our anything else added to the wood? Thank you

You mentioned bluing the parts again that were sanded off. Does the bluing seep into the knife scale? How do you prevent this?

You made a comment about the horizontal sander putting lines in the belts because you are only using one narrow part of the belt. I wonder if you could modify your table rest so it moves up and down, or put some layers of plywood on top of it, so you could use different zones across the width of the belt.

Seen a guy make tool rest out of plate steel and he had some cheap neodymium magnets of different sizes he used as spacers he would just work his way up the belts as needed everything stayed pretty true.

Is finish on any of the knives affected when making kydex sheaths?

Those buffers only have one speed unfortunately. I think they are 3600 rpm

Nice, I'm more freestyle on the 2x72. One thing I like is the thumb ramp. Unfortunately, your handle is below the blade, that Gimping looks like it'd be gnarly on the thumb. Just my 2 cents.

How did you "blue" the belly and the spine after you sanded the scales? My concern is getting bluing on the scales.

Since your blade looks acid washed and after cleaning up the handle it removes the acid wash finish, how do you acid wash it again? I hope my question makes sense to you! Thank you for your help!

Thanks for sharing your skills with us, you're much further along than I am but I refuse to give up. Saw something interesting I wanted to ask you about. It looks like you dip your blades and some coloring agent to make them dark, but when you shape your handles you hit the steel with the belt and knock the black coloring off. I never considered that would be something okay to do, but after seeing you do it I feel better about the blade being dark and the Tang being steel-colored. Thoughts?

I just made my very first knife…i acid and stone washed the blade….when I was profiling the scales , I took away the etching from the spine, and it’s now unmatched to the blade…..is there a way around this? Did I not etch it deep enough? Did I sand too much? Thanks for the help!
