    From just visually looking at the web, I can see the logic behind the ball not wanting to slip out towards the tip of the web area and potentially fall out. It curves a little bit more in towards the glove from the top and I can see why that would keep the ball in more effectively if it hit a spot in the pocket or palm and almost gets squeezed up to the web to slip out. The downside that I have noticed with that really loose web. I have seen a lot of catchers who use it miss balls a lot more off the end of the glove if they get the ball on the tip of the web. Especially ones that tail away from the catchers mid section. That I believe is a product of getting use to the shape still. But, that is my own personal conclusion. I think Mike Piazza and Benito Santiago had one of the best gloves in terms of catchers mitts. Also, got the USA hat the other day. Love it dude!

    Thanks for the video! I am currently living in Korea and like baseball gloves a lot myself. i think I've bought more than 30 different catchers mitts, including Wilson and Rawlings. Honestly, people in Korea and Japan don't like American style mitts that much. if you ever have a chance to come to this areas, you will see what I'm talking about. anyway, one reason is that American style mitts seem to have small pockets and it makes catchers feel nervous about catching balls. and the way they break in their mitts is very different from that of Americans. I think it's because people here get trained differently for catching balls since they are young. the reason they curl in the thumb side is because when they don't catch balls properly, it can hurt their thumb, resulting in injuries. I've experienced it myself with Wilson catcher mitt. And the reason they have long laces is their preference and they think it is easy to catch breaking balls (like slider). Overall, they like bigger pocket mitts and there are two famous dominant catchers mitts : 'Hatakeyama'(Japanese mitt) and 'One Eighty'(Korean mitt). Many other glove makers also copy Hatakeyama patterns. if You wanna know more about Asian mitts, then you should get one of those.

    Japanese catchers mitts are made to accommodate the style of pitching in the NPB. There’s a much more intense emphasis on movement throughout the league. Think about how many arms from the NPB come to the MLB and are absolutely filthy. Bigger more clampy glove with a massive web gives you significantly more room for error.

    I would love to see a super comprehensive video on all types of leather (just leather) from different countries. Horween, kip, Deer tanned cowhide, American steerhide, Japanese kip, fake leathers, super skins, mesh etc etc. Even a video (if you could) on leather dying processes and what colors may hold up the longest etc.

    From what i see from the glove, the loose web is pretty logical. if you think about it, it makes a bigger pocket which leads to less ball dropped. like you said in the last catchers mitt video, “catching the ball is the most important factor of catching.” now throwing and transfers are also important but how similar the times were on the transfer shouldn’t make too much of a difference. therefore you have an advantage of catching it and less missed balls.

    This is what I’ve been waiting for, love the shape on the buckler. I have a Zett pro status catchers mitt from Japan that I broke in the same way. It makes working up through the ball a lot easier when framing balls lower in the zone.

    I think most people like a loose web, even if it sounds dangerous, i think it makes it easier to break it, I kind of like the loose web, it makes it feel more caught in, like a deeper pocket, just enough to where you can feel the ball if your throwing it down to any base. Sometimes it does fly out if you're not closing it right, but it does feel more softer and better (IN MY OPINION). It just makes it seem easier to get the ball.

    Well visually... It helps us pitchers too cuz the target is so big with the loose web. Yeah cuz i did a bullpen with my team mate that uses a gloves that looks like that (minus the long laces) also the sound... If you didn't notice the sound that these gloves make is absolutely amazing if catched corectly. Almost like a gun shot and that gives us more confidence in the bump or just in the bullpen.

    I believe that the looser web makes the glove looser faster and with a catchers mitt you really want it to get to the point where it just closes on impact and in my experience it can help you snag more balls that are badly thrown to your right or left

  • @LuV2SkRaTcH
    @LuV2SkRaTcH3 ай бұрын

    I’m just guessing, but the looser upper web portion is to be more forgiving when the call pops out of the sweet spot. You mentioned the glove had softer leather, which may add more flex when catching heaters. A tighter sweet spot and a looser upper web may add help guarantee an easier more successful catch percentage. But which may lead to a slightly tuned adjustment and practice for transfers.

    The loose web has been a thing in Asian catchersgloves for as long as I've been involved in baseball, which is over 40 years. My take on it is, while you do not look to catch the ball in the web, some pitches will end up there (for example sliders in the dirt), and the loose web increases the chance of still catching it. A tightly laced web decreases the absorption of the ball's impact, making it more likely for the ball to skid away. Maybe Aso, the Wilson glove doctor, who is from Japan, can give a definitive answer.

    Hey BGK, go check out Kyle Higashioka's (NYY) Mitt, he is sporting that extreme loose web, which sometimes even was a topic on the broadcast. My theory besides the bigger target and area to simply catch the ball is, that it'll prevent the ball from shooting out, when you didn't catch it cleanly.

    I like to think of it as the "old school American" style when it comes to the thumb and index (look at Don Mattingly shape glove when he played 3rd base), when it comes to explaining it too American. Web is loose for "assurance" because like you had said, were not trying to catch it there but rather to the side of index finger. With the top of thumb and index rolled in, we have second chance of securing baseball into pocket as ball makes its way up to the pocket. If ball goes past pocket and thumb/index tips, loose webbing acts as basket for assurance. Thank you

    Reasoning for the loose pocket is simply less squirt outs for instance if you got a ball that's kind of jostling around in there it's going to suck it up better than a stiff pocket

    The spot that Chris says you're supposed to catch the ball in is the spot you want the ball to hit the glove... that's not the same as catching it there. If you look at catchers in super slow-mo, the ball hits that spot and then often keeps going 'til it's snared in the loose webbing.

    I’m pretty sure Asian gloves are made to be played the way that they play. But they break in a catchers mitt for breaking balls because if you watch some other Asian pitchers they throw a lot of breaking balls because they aren’t as big as a standard American pitcher.

    I have a question for all kinds of gloves. Is it possible to break your glove and re-break in your glove? Like you have it broken in in one way, then after using it for a while, you decided that you want to wear your glove another way, so you re-break in or re-shape your glove to fit the new way you want to wear it? Also, on a related note, can you re-shape a Wilson A2000 glove that has already been broken in to make it into Japanese style?
