    Jenny, I shadowed my very first physician last month because my friend's dad is a nurse and he knew an Emergency Medicine doctor so he referred me to the doctor. It was THE BEST Feeling ever!! I shadowed for the whole shift for 2 days (so 24hrs total). I 100% recommend all pre-meds to shadow.

    +Entei Raikou That sounds awesome!! How did you feel after 24 hours? Most people describe the drive home like being intoxicated so they end up driving really really slow lol

    Jenny Le This may sound like I'm lying, but trust me, I'm not. After 24hrs (2 days of 12hr shift), I felt a little tired at first. But, I was also hit with a rush of Energy as soon as my shifts were over. I remember writing a short reflection on my experience shadowing and how energized and happy I felt when I was shadowing the doctor. I also wrote down that I didn't want the shift to ever end even if there isn't much action going on in the ER. In addition, Everyone around me were so kind and welcoming. The other doctors, PAs, nurses, front desk, nursing assistants and even the porters! I felt like I belonged in that environment and it was Awesome!! One of the best days and highlight of my 2017 so far. :)

    i love that you put emphasis on the fact that you just need to get out here and ask around because there's no other way to do it. i'm doing clerkship right now and will shadow a physician next year, but in my country, our school randomly pair us with a family doctor in our "state" and we have to shadow them for 2 months. can't wait :D

    can you explain what you should expect from you shadowing experience. do you sit in on appointments? do you just do filing and sit at the front desk? does what you do during your shadowing matter? can you do a quick follow up video addressing this?

  • @drjennale

    +amandisag This depends on where and what doctor you shadow. There's no guidelines to shadow so it's whatever the doctor is comfortable letting you doing. A doctor can let you do all the things you mentioned.

    I shadowed an EM physician a year ago or so. It was amazing. Essentially, I was the doctors shadow (hence "shadowing"). So that means that I followed him everywhere and anywhere. When a code would get called, we'd run to where it was. I'd stand in the corner of the room and watch him (and a whole team of docs and nurses) try to resuscitate the patients (sometimes patients die, so when shadowing an EM doc, keep that in mind). When we weren't doing trauma, I'd sit in and watch him do paper work and talk about the patients we saw. And when he was triaging patients I got to go with him to every appointment and watch everything he did. Shadowing an EM doc is great cause you get to see a lot of different stuff. I have so many stories from it; it was amazing.

    i also went through clinical care extenders, and i got to shadow a cardiologist during my cardiology rotation! it was so great, especially when the doctor loves to teach students! :) I also got to shadow all the cardiology nurses, and assist with stress tests and other procedures! Thanks for the video, Jenny! :D

  • @drjennale

    @drjennale

    7 жыл бұрын

    +s3oda100 I'm not part of administration so I can't say for sure. But I think the earlier you start the better. It's more so about consistency - better to shadow one a week for a whole year compared to just one summer. And if school schedules only allow you to shadow during the summer then do it for multiple summers.
