Don’t be afraid to interrupt the Dr when they are with a patient to ask a question. They love that, it shows initiative

Thank you! I was offered an opportunity to shadow a trauma doctor, so I have no idea what to say or do because I want to be as respectful and mindful as possible. Very insightful!

Thank you!! I'm gonna be observing a Neurosurgeon's surgical operations from a room as a 16-year-old. I knew that I shouldn't wear something that I'd wear to school like ripped jeans, but this made it much more specific, thanks!

Thank you doc! My second doctor that I am shadowing is in a couple days, and I feel as though I did not leave the best impression with the first doctor I shadowed. Will definitely keep all this in mind!

@@sportslinkmd6429 Thank you so much for your reply it means so much! It went great! I’ve since watched several knee and hip replacements, and learned so much more than I could imagine. And until I go to medical school I even got a job as a PCT on the orthopedic floor and am learning even more now! Thank you

This is super awesome! I am a senior in high school and I am going pre med, but I am super nervous. Any tips on what I should this summer? I am already self teaching myself organic chemistry, college biology, college chemistry, etc on khan academy trying to start ahead. I have not a clue on what to do when it comes to shadowing or what else to do on breaks or in the school year that can fill my application to med school. If you could help at all that would be awesome!

Wait... you got into med school AND matched into Ortho without doing any shadowing? Rn on med school apps the avg. is like 150 - 200 hours to even be considered... plus scribing and at least another 300 hrs of ECs. Stats avg. 3.7 - 3.8 gpa and an avg. mcat of 511. Its crazy how different the application process was even just a decade ago.

Hey there, I think you should try. The worst that could happen is that they know. Currently, we have medical/nursing students working with, but we're a bit more strict about volunteers/observers.

I just received a shadowing opportunity and it was not easy I did get lots of no’s before getting a yes. I kept calling around even to places a few hours away because I was willing to travel. I eventually had a few call backs agreeing to let me shadow. The place I went with I had to have a covid testing, complete a few modules related to HIPAA, infectious disease etc

Depends on the environment. If some of the residents and attendings are wearing scrubs, then you're probably fine.
