I have no idea why I made binding necklines so difficult but this video finally broke through my thick head and got me to understand the process 🎉

I honestly do not think YOU made them difficult 😂 they just are! I LOVE binding. But it’s not the appropriate finish sometimes and if it’s hoping to be used anyway at least there’s a few things to do to make it look nicer! Glad I could help.
Im an advanced beginner learning to sew garments. Thank you for this tutorial.

You’re welcome 😊 Happy sewing!
I've always avoided binding, thought it was too hard. But to my surprise I have had great success, not perfect but I'm getting there with practice. Thanks so much for the video!

Yes! Practice! It really does become second nature. Good luck!
I always come back to this video whenever I'm making a dress or top just to make sure of some of the measurements.

That’s great. I’m glad it’s so useful!
I love being able to see exactly what's going on and what I need to watch for. There are no cut-aways... you see EVERYTHING start to finish.

No problem!
I love the straight talk about using this method. I'll remember to use a narrow strip of bias and that it is what it is - and *try* not to be so caught up with getting it perfectly flat when using this finish.

Exactly! Seems like a simple finish but there’s a trade off 😉
Thanks a lot. It's very interesting.

Thanks!
Thank you for these videos, would love to see how you would do this on an armhole.

No problem! It’s exactly the same procedure. (For a sleeveless armhole).
Can you get a flatter binding if you use a walking foot? Would that help with the torquing? I'm wondering if some of the torquing comes from the feet dogs and presser foot pushing in opposite directions.

That’s a great thought but the walking foot wouldn’t help. The problem is that the long edge of the binding your sewing on the final stitch is a shorter length than what you’re sewing it to. Hopefully I explained that in the vide. Pretty sure I did since I see this finish on so many beginning projects and it’s not the greatest for beginners. Sure they’re skilled enough to sew it but the method of getting it flat is subtle. This neckline finish seems simple but it’s honestly not the greatest. A facing would produce a smoother finish. Or binding the edge so that it’s visible on both sides. Hope that helps! (A walking foot is great for very thick fabrics so that the top layers don’t get pushed just like you said!)
The dresses #1 and #2 don’t have separate front/back pattern pieces. I adore #1 with FBA on front. However, I will not make #2 again. The sleeves are identical and it doesn’t work for my somewhat sloped back.

Are you talking about 100 Act is Sewing? There aren’t separate front and back? Hmm. That’s interesting! I’ve made a few but I can’t remember which ones I’ve made. I get confused with the names. Darts are essential for a good fit!
Dress #1 has only 1 pattern for front/back. I have made it several times. The dress #2 is the same, but because it has sleeves, I didn’t like the fit in the back. Next time I make #1 I will put in bust darts.

Yes it’s the same but the neck is different front to back. This means that the shoulder height doesn’t change front to back either. It’s not ideal at all but they’re solid beginner and simple patterns! Bust shaping sounds like a great idea. Cutting them in the bias is also pretty magical for a pattern like that.

@@SewSewLive Bias! Great idea! I have made 4 versions, one in wool coating with larger armsceyes and a full lining, to remind me of a jumper I wore as a kid in the 60’s. My fave cool-weather make. No darts but so intensely a-lined. Vintage buttons (decorative only, on straps)from my SIL’s Gramma’s stash. A huge herringbone. So fun.
