How to Sew a Martingale Collar

I purchased the webbing and hardware used in this video from Country Brook Design. The pattern used in this collar is called Snowy Pines Polyester Webbing and you can view it here: www.countrybro...
The Hardware used is the 1 Inch Martingale Dog Collar Kit and can be viewed here: www.countrybro...
I also added a "Keeper" which is optional. Here's the URL: www.countrybro...
The #69 weight bonded nylon thread I purchased on Amazon: www.amazon.com...
And you will want to use a Denim needle size 110/18.
Webbing you will need for different sized collars:
Extra Large: 1" wide webbing, a 12" and a 35" piece, loop overlap: 3" (Fits neck size 23"-31".)
Large: 1" wide webbing, a 12" and a 29" piece, loop overlap: 3" (Fits neck size 18"-26".)
Medium: 1" wide webbing, a 12" and a 24" piece, loop overlap: 3" (Fits neck size 15"-21".)
Small: 3/4 wide webbing, a 9" and a 19" piece, loop overlap: 2 1/4" (Fits neck size 11"-15".)
Extra Small 5/8 wide webbing, an 8" and a 17" piece, loop overlap: 2 1/4" (Fits neck size 9"-12".)
I created an additional size for large puppies that are too big for a small, but swim in a medium. I call it a "smedium" (small-medium): 1" wide webbing, a 11" and a 21 1/2" piece, loop overlap: 3" (Fits neck size 14"-18.5"

Thanks for the awesome tutorial! We have a rescue pup we adopted 8 years ago and we have always used a Martingale collar for him. We just adopted a puppy and she's needs her own Martingale collar. I think making these is going to become my new obsession lol And I just wanted to say Thelma is beautiful! I had one that was my mother's, she was a workhorse of a machine. Unfortunately I no longer have her, but some day I hope to get another one.

The Extra Small fits neck sizes 9" - 12", the Small fits 11" - 15", and if I had to guess I would say my Smedium fits in between those two so 13"-18". Written instructions is a great idea. But right now I do not have them.

The small size requires 9” and 19” pieces of webbing and fits dogs with 11”-15” necks. The xsmall uses 8” and 17” length of webbing and fits dogs with 9”-12” necks. I only use 2.5” of overlap when stitching the small loop.

Thelma, the 1948 Singer 15-91 used in this video, is a work horse. Being gear driven (no belt) with a heavy hand wheel she does like to keep going, and on those small collars is a challenge. I try to go slow and use my hand on the hand wheel to start and stop. You may find a Pfaff 30 easier to use, it has a lighter weight hand wheel and a 1.3 amp motor which makes up for the lighter handwheel. The Pfaff 30 starts easier and stops on a dime. Thank you, I've been sewing for longer than I like to admit!

Can you clarify how much of the overlap you're stitching in the first step - is it about half of the 3"? BTW, love your Thelma - I have several vintage Singers as well, and they're wonderful for this type of work!

Hi Sanne, 20 cm is roughly 7.87 inches so going by the chart on Country Brook Designs website the size collar you would want to make is the "Mini" size. The small look is 6" and the large loop is 12". This chart can be found here: www.countrybrookdesign.com/how-to/collars/how-to-make-a-martingale-collar Have Fun!

When looking to purchase a sewing machine to sew webbing, I would bring both the thread and webbing with you and try it out. The thread will require you to adjust both the upper and lower tension. I use #69 thread and polyester webbing. I've found that a Singer 15-91 sews it very well. I also have a Necchi BU Mira that does a good job on it as well.

  • @doreensdesigns6873

    @doreensdesigns6873

With my Singer 15-91 I use Tex 70 also can be listed at #69 Nylon thread. Polyester would work too. I use either a Jeans 110/18 needle or Topstitch 100/16 needle. You will need to adjust the bobbin tension when going to this weight thread. If you will be switching your machine between sewing collars and other projects, consider picking up another bobbin so you can make the transition quicker. You can also pick up a bobbin tension gauge at the Featherweight shop online. The bobbin tension I use on my Singer 15-91 is 33-35 grams. Happy sewing!
