I've watched both this and the tutorial for making a fitted sheet and both videos are excellent. I'm in Australia and have never seen a duvet/doona cover with a flap but it's such a simple, practical design that I'm now kicking myself for never having thought of it when I've made covers in the past. I'm just about to make a cover with matching pillowcases so I'll definitely be making a cover with a flap now. No mucking around with fastenings and, by the look of it, a more secure doona which is perfect for a restless sleeper like me. I'll be much less likely to wake up freezing with my doona on the floor! I'm really glad that I saw this tutorial before starting my bedding set. I'm off to see your tutorial on making pillowcases in case you have anything that is an improvement on how I usually make them. Thank you so very much!

Yes, I've never seen one like that either but it's a great idea! It seems both simpler and more practical than all of the covers I've seen and I'm a bit of a bed linen junkie, so I've visited many a bedding store. I'm wondering why that design isn't commonly seen in doona/duvet covers here in Australia. I've made quite a few covers as well over the years and, like most good design ideas, now I've seen it done this way, I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it myself as it makes so much sense.

Admitting my lack of knowledge about using a duvet cover. I was a houseguest of a lady from Europe who made her beds only with duvet and duvet cover. She had to explain to me that there is no top sheet and no blanket (at least in the summertime) on the bed ... only a bottom fitted sheet (or flat sheet tucked in) and the duvet cover. It felt kind of odd to sleep directly under what seemed to be a "comforter" instead of sleeping between two sheets with a blanket or comforter over the top. It did make for fast work in the morning to tidy up the bed - just had to straighten the duvet and fluff up the pillows. I have purchased a king sized duvet cover now, but it requires ironing and is quite a chore (and I even like to iron!). Since it is in direct contact with the occupants it will require frequent laundering and ironing. So, even though it speeds up the time required to make the bed each morning, the time spent laundering, ironing, and wrestling the duvet back into the cover each time may not e a net gain. I'm leaning toward continuing to use a top sheet and then the covered duvet on top of that to avoid wear and tear of frequent laundering of the cover. I would love others' opinions.

yea! I do exactly the same,it's a good way to avoid so much washing for hygene and costs of laundry, plus wear and tear on covers, especially if you make you're own quilts,go for sheets then a duvet.

I just did an inventory of ALL our linen (everything out of the closet) and boy, we have an abundance! My teenage girls today declared that it was useless to use a flat sheet under the duvet because the sheet ends up at the bottom of the bed anyway. Plus, making the bed in the morning is a breeze (the girls have a bunk bed), with only a duvet to deal with. So... I'll try my hand in sewing duvet covers from the numerous flat sheets we have. With regards to ironing, I don't. I like to fold our linen straight from the dryer.

Hello! Thank you for your excellent tutorial. I've recently started sewing as a hobby and your DIY videos really help. I have a question though regarding the blanket cover without a flap. I really enjoyed making the pillow cover using the Couture Anglaise from your other video, the inside seam is beautiful! So I'm trying to apply the same sewing technique (Couture Anglaise) on the blanket cover (without a flap) and I have trouble creating the bottom pocket. What's the next step after I create the hem at the bottom on the 2 sides in order to have a Couture Anglaise on the inside? Thank you! P.S.: you have an amazing soothing voice, you should consider recording audio children's books! :)

Hello from Canada! I enjoy watching your videos. In Canada we usually have zippers, snaps or buttons to close the opening. I am still not sure what you do with the flap at the bottom? Do you insert it back inside the duvet or do you tuck it under a mattress or what? My mattress is 45 cm deep, would I have to make the flap the depth of the mattress plus more for tucking? Show us a video. Thanks. Jasha

A first for me, I'm a true novice... but this turned out perfect! I only wish I had bought some nicer fabric! I was so sure I would be rubbish at this so bought cheap cheap ugly fabric :)

I would also like to see a video on braidal bedsheets, and if possible I would learn too. How much?

Hello ! For bridal bedding, I can suggest following the same instructions but use satin or even silk fabric instead. Then you can add lace appliqués and other decorations you like. Happy sewing ! 🌷

Merci de ce gentil message 😊 Bien sûr, j’ai commandé ce tissu chez Linsvoges durant les soldes pour que ce soit plus abordable. Faites bien attention à bien laver le tissu à réception, il va rétrécir !
