How to Setup Your Helmet for Combat | Special Forces Technique | Tactical Rifleman
Ойын-сауық
We got a few comments on our “How to set up your Body Armor” video, asking about the helmet I had in the videos and how we go about setting a helmet up.
Simple: Don’t weigh it down with extra crap you don’t need. Keep it simple.
NVDs: Ensure your mount is tight. There’s nothing worse than having your NODs flopping around. Also, a safety note, if your helmet does not have the correct hole pattern for your new NOD mount, do NOT just drill new holes. Drilling holes in the Kevlar cuts the strings that run in every direction and weakens the entire helmet. Rather, the correct method is to drive a punch through with a press. This will cut much fewer strands and maintain the integrity of the helmet.
Lights: I’ve tried all the different helmet lights, but have found that I just prefer to use a Petzl headlamp, if extra light is needed.
One thing I forgot to mention: You might have noticed the IR American Flags on both sides of the helmet. These are for identifying Friend or Foe (IFF). Think about it; if you turn to look out a window, the snipers will only see your head. The flags help them identify you as a friendly. We tried small squares of IR Glint Tape, but the flags work much better.

Hey Karl, im a retired Soldier from the Argentinian Army, Infantry. Back in the boot camp we used to wear the M1 steel helmet and hell it was heavy and warm. So unconfortable to go around. When we acquired the CABAL 2 made of Kevlar they were amazing light weight, comfortable and better for aiming. Regards from Argentina, the ARG Army. Great videos keep it that way

That phrase is from the Japanese manufacturing principle of 'seiton'.
That battery pack is bad ass. Idk how many times my PVS 14 has died on me and I've had to stop and pull a AA battery from my pack. Only problem is that nearly all the gear we're issued uses different batteries. PEQ 16 uses 123's, PVS 14 uses AA's, and the red leans headlamps we mainly use have AAA's. You end up having to keep a waterproofing bag full of batteries in your pack with you at all times. The bungee cord on the front of your kevlar is also very smart. The elbow mount for the PVS 14 is notoriously loose and rattly.
having that one is really appreciate ^_^ folks. even an old one. great video!
Finally got one today, thanks for the advice.

"You're looking like a Gear Queer." LMAO! Immediate subscribe.
Mad facts. I know there’s Garand Thumbtard weirdos whose helmets look like the Amazon rain forest with all the wires and hoses and cables and Velcro. I just used what was issued (like your first one minus the rails) an attachable flashlight, and my goggles. I also used 4 pads, since more just makes it even sweatier inside.
Worn gear is tricky to design since no two people have the same exact body build. This is especially true for helmets because the human head requires a lot of consideration: protection, mobility, weight, padding, accessory integration. Our heads are our information hubs. Most of our sensory cues are collected by our head (through sight, sound, smell, and taste) so it’s important to enable the use of these senses with the least amount of impairment brought on by protective gear. Comfort must be a high priority, because if your head is uncomfortable it’s hard to focus on anything else. And of course we need to integrate essential accessories. The modern battlefield is more advanced than the ones our fathers and grandfathers fought on. With new threats come new tactics. And with new tactics comes new gear to support them. As always, I search for a balance of combat effectiveness and comfort when assembling my gear. Every little piece gets interrogated before getting added: Will this widget help me be a more effective gunfighter? Does this item help support the three tenets of gunfighting-shoot, move, communicate?

My go-to helmet is an Ops-Core FAST SF. This is the latest/greatest entry in the storied FAST helmet line. I still have my original FAST Ballistic (from before they began calling it the FAST XP), covered in layers of spray paint. It’s on its fifth liner system since the previous ones got so used and crusty they began holding shape. Ops-Core was the original designed-from-the-ground-up special operations helmet. They started the trend of taking the helmet concept down to its core and designing something based completely around feedback from elite warriors. Other companies followed suit and we now have many great options from several manufacturers from which the warrior can choose. Over the years I wore Crye Precision Airframes, Team Wendy EXFILs, and MTEK FLUXs. All are solid options to be sure, but I kept coming back to Ops-Core.👍🏻
Watching this video knowing full well I probably won’t have one for several years still and am stuck with a GS mk6
Solid advice
I think to each their own... folks can wear what they want in my opinion it may give them more comfort and or confidence.

Nice. No nonsense.
Hey can you tell me what battery box that is and do you have to mod your PVS-14s? Only reason I ask is because I was issued PVS14s in iraq that took two batteries. The new ones I was just issued, not by the army, use just one AA battery instead of two. Thanks.
Thanks for the video............................................................. & THUMBS UP : )
Link to the AA battery counterbalance kit?

Karl thank you for this video it's very useful with a lot of good advice! For me the most intresting is the Pvs battery horder, could you tell me that what brand is it?
the only ballistic rated helmets i've found (as a civilian) are only 3a rated, are there level 3 or higher (rifle rated) helmets commercially available? obviously, harder to get right now, just curious in general. thanks.
Meanwhile in the conventional forces, you wear whats been issued to you🤣🤣🤣and at best, you make it comfortable✊
Can you bring your personal own hearing protection headset/earplugs if the army doesn't provide you any, for example in a shooting training?
Great channel, thanks for sharing so much great information...What's the holster you're wearing on your belt...? thanks

I know this video is old asf, but by the odd chance you see this video where did you get that A H/MICH ear clamp?
I tried on one of the paramedic rescue helmets during one of my field trips, and my forehead was completely exposed. Even adjusting it, it couldn't fit my Sputnik sized head. I don't know if it was not the right size helmet, or else, but I can hardly fit any helmet my head is that big.
Call me Fred Flintstone. Last helmet I wore was way back in my Army days. It was a steel pot.
Karl you are cool guy.
Very good vid> what is the manufacturer of the dual battery pack? Thank You
@TacticalRifleman

It varies by Night Vision Device. Most are not interchangeable. So, for whatever NVDs you run, check and see it the manufacturer offers such an option. Most good ones do.

@Tactical Rifleman why do some sof guys place strips of 100 mph tape on the tops of their kevlars? I typically see about 4 strips. What typical SOP does that serve a purpose for?

They are for holding explosive strip charges to doors. If the charge starts to peal off, you can use to tape to stick the end.

@@TacticalRifleman HUA! Thanks for the love. PS: You got a video on stowing "gucci helmet kit" during daytime ops (some guys leave that at camp, but then they find themselves stuck outside the wire and needing it; being able to leave it in a vehicle is nice if you're armored), but if you're going to carry it and stow it in case night falls, where do you recommend it? Also, a lot of us are no longer serving... we're thinking ahead to the unfortunately likely boogaloo.

What would you guys suggest for a helmet light?
Within 25 seconds I gave you a thumbs up, when you said keep it clean, "dont look like a gear queer". I have seen guys that had on ONE HELMET: Velcro all over the fucking place 1-IR Strobe 2-"Burn" tape 3-IR chemlight 4-Call Sign Patch 5-US Flag patch 6-"Fun Meter" patch (PS . . . NO ONE . . . gives a shit about your fun meter being pegged) 7-Dive Weight (literal) serving as counter wight 8-side mounted flashlight 9-2 AA batteries *Some of these are necessary, but not nearly all, like you said, keep it clean LATE NOTE- Forgot the HN Flag (WTF would you want THAT flag anywhere on you?)
Can you upgrade your own armor in the army?

If your an operator at night then you need NVG, you need IR, so that your team can I'd you, you may need a flashlight and comms on the helmet as well..so what is so "flashy" about having the necessities on your helmet.

Wouldn't it stobes give you away if the enemy had nods Karl? The application of then definitely makes sense I was just curious how you guys worked around that

Yes, having any active IR (or visible) light source will give away your position. You must weigh the pros and cons and adjust your tactics based of your current situation.
