Thank you so much. Very well explained and certainly covers the basics on how to get your best shot of coffee. Thank you for doing a close-up on how the shot pours out. It helped me a lot as for some reason I always thought that it not good if the volume is too low 🤷‍♂️. Since I use different beans then you do it’s just a matter of fine tuning a bit more. I wish Breville would’ve done most of the tuning before shipping it to me but the factory settings are way off. Thanks again!

According to the manual, it should go into filter basket: “Insert the cleaning disc into the FILTER BASKET in the portafilter.” The instructions in this video seem to be wrong. I tried doing the flush without the filter basket and the “cleaning” water was pouring out of the portafilter. It also took 4 flushes to completely dissolve the cleaning tablet (according to the manual you should repeat the flush if the cleaning tablet is not completely dissolved after the first flush). Doing the flush with filter basket required only single flush and the water was not pouring out of portafilter but went directly to the bottom reservoir.

I’m a little confused on adjusting the grind size. There’s the adjustment knob that shows a faster or slower pour, and you demonstrated actually taking out and adjusting the burr itself. Is one method preferred over the other? Also, the numbers, in seconds, on the bottom of the display that you’re able to adjust... is that for the duration of the grind? These questions may seem strange, however, I have a neighbor who was just gifted this machine without having any instructions or manual. I'm not even sure you'll get a smaller or weaker shot. 54 or 58mm is the diameter, not the depth. Theoretically, the basket that holds the coffee could hold the same amount of coffee as a 58mm portafilter. It's just going to depend on the depth of the basket.

@@crabjoe Theoretically you're right. However, in practice, a 58mm portafilter is bigger in both diameter and depth, so it holds more coffee volume. I saw in another video that a deeper cake is more prone to channeling issues and requires more consistent tamping skills. Since the Barista is targeted at beginner and not pros (despite the PRO in the name) Breville decided to go with a smaller portafilter.

Each morning I heat up the group head and portafilter, run a few beans through the grinder to grind out any old retention.... I then single dose my beans with a scale on my preferred grind setting that I thought was a good dial in, using only fresh coffee.. I then use a distribution tool and an auto tamp to be consistent. ..then I'll hit my custom shot which should be timed from my previous dial in session to be nearly perfect (getting a 1:2 ratio in grams of output between 25 and 32 seconds)..but yet it will pull wildly different each time. What the heck I'm trying to do everything the same as much as possible so why do my results vary so much? I feel exasperated and about to give up on this machine.

Even though you program it by time (how many second) it will stop when a certain volume of water is dispensed. You can confirm that buy weighing your shot every time. No matter how many second it took, the final volume of the shot should be the same. And yes, you have to dial in again each time you use different coffee.

The internal burr adjustment is NOT recommended right off the bat. It was intended as something to be done as a last resort, or as something you could do if you just could not achieve the desired results after many attempts. I have the Smart Grinder Pro (2 in fact), and I have Never had to make this adjustment.

Coming from a barista, it just takes TONNES of practice and trial-and-error! Keep trying and adjusting your method, but generally, make sure you have the milk wand 2cm deep in the surface of the milk - too close to the bottom and the milk will be loose, too close to the surface and it'll be super foamy. There's also plenty of videos on here that explain it better. Hope this helps!

My fiancé can’t get the portafilter head set on the spout at all, it takes nearly all my strength to put it on even with her holding the machine. Even the wheel to adjust the grind size is hard to turn. The water barely flows through on a 10 grind setting with 18 grams of espresso. Tried going to the 12 grind setting and it took 52 seconds to reach 20 grams of espresso. The grind was really not that fine either. Plus it’s extremely loud... very disappointing for a $800 machine.

The grinders in the machine arent perfect but the bullshit About changing to single wall after your an "expert" is dumb. This machine will also NOT heat the portafilter at all because it doesnt heat until water flows through the head.
