I’ve had my Breville Pro for about a year now. Great tips for the machine. Most importantly though, fresh beans. They make all the difference. I stopped filling my grinder. Now I measure and weigh my beans for a more consistent and fresher shot. Although it’s a little more work, it’s worth the extra steps. It’s also part of the process and very satisfying. The bean hopper is fairly tight but not airtight. For me it made all the difference.

Measuring out each time is the key to great espresso. I go 18g in and 36 out in about 30 seconds for best results. Buy a scale and weigh your shots everytime. It makes a huge difference because the grinder isn’t that consistent unfortunately

Good stuff, Gail. Thanks for explaining more about the ThermoJet heating system. It sounds great. Do you think all Breville machines will eventually have the ThermoJet system, or is it more expensive than the older system, which might preclude it from being used on their cheaper machines? Just curious about where they might be headed.

John Edwards actually my family are from Florida and Ohio, right now I live in the south, but throughout my life I’ve lived through 22 cities in 10 states. If it helps, our ancestry is Celtic Irish gypsy with a little Viking and Scandinavian mixed in. I guess it’s in my blood to be a wanderer. A lot of Suggs live in the Carolinas, but we do not only originally from there.😉 And quite frankly, I don’t have any family that I know of from the Carolinas. Same name, but we must not be related. I have met another Suggs from North Carolina, but we share no common family members. That is how I know this.

@John Edwards Thank you! I really do appreciate it! The name is of an old English origin that means to have a ‘bright and cheerful personna’, and that is very true for me. Looking at my ancestry report shows that there is British in me (come to think of it, looking at my report now shows that there is just as much British as there is Irish in me, but they lumped British and Irish in the same category). I’m glad you inspired me to check that out! Thank you again, this actually makes me feel more connected to the UK now, but yes, that is precisely where the name originates and I am proud to have it, No matter how I ended up with it! I’ve been to England a couple times, I’ve been to Ireland, I’ve been to Scotland, and I’ve been to Iceland (I’m going back this summer) just to name a few of the places that I’ve traveled abroad to. I’ve been to over 20 different countries. If there’s one thing that gets me off, it’s culture, and honestly, I feel more at home in the UK than I feel anywhere else in the world (spare for Reykjavík, it’s a tie in my eyes). I think you literally just helped me get to know myself better...

Loganbay I used to have the DeLonghi Magnifica a long time ago, but it crapped out on me after a while. That was around the time I saw the BES 870 XL at Williams Sonoma, and I had to have it. I’m very happy with this machine. It does the job very well. Should anything ever happen to it, God forbid because I take good care of it, the Oracle Touch is definitely what I’m eyeing because of Gail.

  • @johnathan4868

    @johnathan4868

    5 жыл бұрын

@John Edwards All of this is very much true. I’ve been to these places, as well as Salem, Massachusetts, and I can attest to this as well. I’ve often exclaimed that England is my home away from home. It’s funny you mention Paris, because I went there in the summer of 2017. I like the city, but I guess us Americans have a bad reputation as tourists, because the people weren’t too kind. I even learned enough French to speak it, but I guess they just don’t like outsiders- even if we tried to break the mold of traditional tourists and see the city as a local. I’ve actually apologized for the behavior of typical Americans several times in different countries. Sometimes we’ll stay at B&Bs throughout the places we visit and we get to know the homeowners and talk with them. I’ve heard some stories that are embarrassing to me as an American. Not to be political, but I hate how we are a laughingstock to the world, and I should never have to feel ashamed of where I’m from. But I get it, I see it, I understand it, and that’s what makes it so hard because I see exactly where everyone else is coming from and I agree with it. Personally, I try to totally submerge myself into other cultures for a deeper learning of them as well as myself. I don’t want these few bad examples to represent me to the world because I have so much love for this globe- and kind people like you who helped me connect to myself deeper, even if through the comments section of a KZread video (now THIS is how you connect over coffee! Thank you, Gail!) With that said, I get why people can be a little rude to Americans, so I won’t hold it against them. France is still beautiful.

Great tips. I am a coffee aficionado (from Paris and engineer). Your comments are very valuable, I couldn't say it better ;-) One extra tip:tThis is how you can drill to make your cappuccino: put water in the pot, somewhere between min and max, add one droplet of dish washing liquid into the water. It works exactly the same than with milk and you don't waste your great organic stuff.

Good tips for sharing. I see that you steam your milk before extracting coffee. After steaming milk, the boiler is hot, do you need to do a blink shot pull to purge out the heat so that when it comes to extraction, it will give an optimal temperature? I have this issue with my other small home entry level coffee appliance. I need to either let the steam off completely or do a blind shot pull.

This is a very helpful video, thanks very much. Just had a question about the pro's steam wand. I noticed mine has 4 holes, and when pointed 180 degrees to the tray, steam emits from all 4 holes. But when I tilt the wand in any direction, steam only comes from the bottom 2 holes. I ensured that the holes were not plugged. Is this normal or is my machine not putting out enough pressure (ie, is my machine defective)? Thanks very much.

Something ive not seen addressed: after tamping and using the depth gauge to get the correct air gap between the screen and coffee grounds, i still get the puck sticking up and/or grounds sticking to the screen, which necessitates cleaning the screen every time. From what i understand, this air gap is important, but my grounds must be pressed up against this screen every time. Opinions on this ?

From what I've seen when other people do it, they start high (about 3 inches) like you did there. But then for the art, they briefly pause and the milk jug is touching the top of the glass and the milk is "laid" instead of poured on top. I think Another issue you may have experienced is that you let your milk sit too long. I've heard it's important to pull the shot first then do the milk, because you need just the right consistency for micro foam and the longer it sits the less consistent it is. But then again, what do I know. Lol.

I have some general questions about making espresso and was wondering if you could answer some. I have heard a lot about how most cafes using double shots to make their espresso and espresso based drinks because of the shape of most single baskets which means extraction of espresso is not always consistent. Even if a customer asks for a single shot, a double basket would be used to extract a double shot but the double shot is halved by placing two cups and espresso is brewed using a double sprout, so one shot is usually wasted. What would you suggest? A naked portfafilter is sometimes used for a better extraction, would you suggest using a naked one as opposed to one with sprouts? In terms of brewing ratios, I have heard that 1:2 is usually what to aim for. So assuming I will use double shots for my espresso based drinks and therefore add around 20 grams of coffee to the double basket, I should yield 40 grams of liquid espresso (which should take around 25 seconds to brew). Thank you.

I tried this machine and wanted to like it, but I could not get a good 1:2 brew ratio in 20-30 seconds with this machine. I have another machine with a PID that does it easily and has better taste than the Breville. More flavor, more undertones, more nuances come through. The steam wand on the Breville is not that powerful, either.

Hi Gail, really appreciate your reviews ! How’s the temperature on the Barista Pro , I heard the coffee doesn’t get too hot and it’s a problem . Please tell me what you think . Thanks . Would you recommend to get the barista express or the pro ? Thanks

What I am worried about with this machine is it having no temperature read out. So you don't know what the temp is?

I don’t think it gets hot enough. I can only get it up to 160 degrees.

Partly on your recommendation I purchased this machine. What would you suggest for settings for the perfect flat white shot? Currently I am on 5 for a grind setting and the rest is default settings. I am using the 2 cup autogrind and shots

I have the breville barista touch and 2 months ago when I first bought it was making beautiful velvety microfoam milk but now it just makes a lot of noise and creates big bubbles that start to pop as soon as I pour the milk into the coffee. The top of my coffee cup looks like lava, I need help. I don't know what I am doing different or wrong since the beginning. I have cleaned the steam wand a couple of times and already cleaned the head with the tablet provided in the box that it came with. Help, please.

Hi gail, thanks for foing reviews on the breville machines. I was waiting for you to remove the drip tray. My question is: does the barista pro have that knob to turn and lift up the machine, so it will move easily on the counter??

I have a question about the ratio. All videos I've seen and literature read talk about a 2 to 1 ratio. 18g of coffee and 36g of output. Your videos, however, mention 2 ounces of output instead. Two ounces are equivalent to 57g, hence my confusion as I just got one of these machines and still trying to figure out the right amount and taste. Thank you in advance.

I’m very perplexed because the expresso model came with the Allen key tool to remove the group head screen for cleaning but the 878 barista pro doesn’t and nowhere in the instruction manual mentioning the removal of the shower screen.
