    Thanks for the great video series! I purchased the focusrite scarlet 2i2 3rd gen and the sure 48 mic. I saw them tested together online and the person was able to use moderate gain. I have to crank it to full to get any response and the audio only comes from one ear on my headphones. (I tried all the recommended fixes for windows) I’m about to send back the scarlet. Is it possible it’s just not compatible with windows?

    I found I had low levels with my 2i2 and checked everything. Eventually it seemed to be the USB port of my computer. I cleaned them and changed port and got better signal response. Weird I know. Check everything. Drivers, cables for kinks or loose connections. You’ll be surprised how common this is.

    Hi! This was great. I have a related question: Why not go quieter than -18dbs? Is it because then you need to bump it up in post production to get up to "hearing levels"? I'm producing music mostly if that makes any difference, meaning no live streaming. I'm thinking reducing it even further would give yourself even more headroom.

  • @kettnercreative

    Midi is a digital signal, so it doesn't apply. With MIDI keyboards, just the note and velocity are recorded, you don't have to worry about peaking.

    Thank you for this video! Just wondering: If I have to always turn my gain up to max and speak as close to the microphone as possible and use the ins. button, do you have any idea of why this might happen? Is there something wrong with my equipment? I'm using a Shure dynamic mic with a 2 meter long cable. I wonder if the length of the cable can influence the strength of the input?

  • @kettnercreative

    @kettnercreative

    Жыл бұрын

    Length of the cable has nothing to do with level. In theory XLR is supposed to run 1000' with minimal degradation. The INST button only changes the impedance of the 1/4" input, it won't help your mic in any way. 1) You might need a cloudlifter (or other inline preamp) to give you more clean gain. 2) You might have a faulty preamp, it does happen sometimes.

    Microphone's gain is too weak? Hello So I just got a Rode NT2-A Mic with a Forcusrite sound card . So. I connect the microphone to the Forcusrite turn the Phantom power supply on, and the only way I can hear myself talk/sing is by increasing the gain/volume (whatever it's called, I'm new to audio engineering) to almost maximum, but when I do that, I get a way more than subtle buzzing sound. Now, I looked up tutorials, and the guy seems to use a condenser microphone similar to my own, and the exact same Forcurite , and his volume/gain settings are set way lower than what I have to do to actually hear me talk/sing, and also he gets no buzzing sound. Just clear vocals Any help would be much appreciated.

    How do you guys normally set the Windows device volume level? By default I think mine was set at 60 and if its turned up too high, even with no gain on the interface, it will have some high-pitched whine. Not sure if it's just noise coming into the USB interface because of bad cables, grounding, etc or what.

    Hello, I have 5 questions and Im sure im not the only one. Im trying to record my voice for gaming KZread videos and perhaps streaming, I have the Podmic - xlr cable - scarlet solo - usbc to usb cable- to high end PC. I installed the drivers and software focusrite that you get when plug and play the scarlet. 1) When i try to record something with Adobe Premiere Pro the mic icon is greyed (Why?). 2) Also the Audio Recording settings of Windows 10 shows "Analogue 1+2 Focusrite Usb audio" but it doesn't show the Podmic, is this normal and why does it say analog, is not supposed to be digital? 3) On the other hand, when I record using Adobe Audition it works, but I hear my voice extremely low, even tough I have the gain knob on my scarlet solo set to max. I dont think this is normal and I dont wanna spend on a cloud lifter I just want to record a nice, clear and high monologue commenting videogames but so far it sounds like a cheap mic, how to improve the gain? 4)Thoughts about stereo/mono settings, whats the difference, do I need to change something somewhere? 5) Finally, what software can I use to record my voice at the same time while im playing games, what is the process you follow?

    If you're using your mics gain button, to bypass focusrite preamp, you have to use line input TRS jack. I believe on the focusrite it's called the instrument input on the front. I'm not sure how that gain but I'm not familiar with the mic you may or may not need an external power supply for phantom power if it's not usb powered.

    I have a nw-800 microphone, when I connect it to my focusrite scarlett only 3rd gen, and turn on the phantom power, my microphone picks up a signal with the volume set to zero on the card, is it normal for this to happen?

    It might be possible for it to pickup some signal. Typically you need to be in the 30-60% range to get an appopraite level though.

    Hey I'm a streamer, and sometimes I feel when I yell its just too loud, is there anyway to set a peak? so I dont cross a certain line?

    You're looking for a "compressor". Essentially, you can set a threshold and compress everything @ 3:1 or 4:1, once you hit a certain volume. This is a really good way to make your loudest moments a little bit quieter and easier to listen to. If you're streaming, I'm going to assume that you're using OBS? I would Google "OBS Compressor Tutorial".

    Turn it down. My guess is that you have a compressor or volume adjustment on the software side before the meter
