Thank you so much for the info! I think this will help me a lot. I've been getting a lot of background noise in my recording and I think it might be just because the gain on my Scarlett is set too high. I didn't even realize it flashed when you hit -24. Thank you!

What do you think about setting a low gain for recording and then, normalize or boost it in post (DAW)?
Thanks for the tips 😊 I was wondering - does anyone else find the headphone monitor to be too quiet for recording instruments? I don't know if I need a headphone preamp or if there's a software fix. Thanks!😊
excellent info mate, what would you suggest as best formula for removing noise other then your voice when using OBS for live format, is just altering the gain like suggested going to do this or using a supressor/noise gate in OBS or does that alter the audio too much?
I smoke a look at video. exact same setup as me. trippy
I’ve had the Focusrite Solo since 2015. Should i upgrade?

hello. first of all, thank you sir for this wonderful information! 🎉 i had a question, which is, what should be the gain of your computer or laptop if you are setting your pre-amp to 50%?
What'sthe best settings for acoustic guitar?
Could you suggest ideal gain for clean sounding electric guitar recording from an amp?
Hi! What program is on the left side of the screen?
What about d output speaker gain
How do I see what number the gain is at? I'm using Scarlett 8i6 with GarageBand and a Mac. Thanks.
Great video! Can I ask the name of the software you are using to track gain?
@kettnercreative

It's the input meter on Logic Pro
What is the software are u using to measure ?
So what do we do if we need to keep the gain knob on Scarlett Solo at almost zero because the guitar starts clipping as soon as you turn the knob a little?
Thanks for the great video series! I purchased the focusrite scarlet 2i2 3rd gen and the sure 48 mic. I saw them tested together online and the person was able to use moderate gain. I have to crank it to full to get any response and the audio only comes from one ear on my headphones. (I tried all the recommended fixes for windows) I’m about to send back the scarlet. Is it possible it’s just not compatible with windows?
@BlackNomad1

I found I had low levels with my 2i2 and checked everything. Eventually it seemed to be the USB port of my computer. I cleaned them and changed port and got better signal response. Weird I know. Check everything. Drivers, cables for kinks or loose connections. You’ll be surprised how common this is.
Why did I set the gain is when I'm in front of the microphone it lights up green but on logic pro it always exceeds 0 and it turns red?
What about the volume of the recording device in the windows settings? Should we leave it on 100%? Or lower? What about the gain in the microphone itself? Some softwares like OBS also allow you to change the volume... I'm confused
i have the scarlett solo 3rd gen. what software do you use to control the gain? Because The focusrite software does nothing at all.
Hello, I’m trying to calibrate my speakers, but I can’t find the unity gain on this interface. If you know where the unity gain I would really appreciate a reply? 🙏🏽
👍👍
My focusrite is not working, I have a rode nt1 microphone and doesn't work with the focusrite, can you help me?
How do I apply unity gain for studio monitor calibration on audient id4 audio interface?

Hey beautiful
but how to get like keybaord sounds off ? I have a friend thats in the same room has me but when he talks we can ear him in the backgroud, how to change this like noise cancelling or background noises eraser, and no lose my voice when im talking
How can you check your gain level on Audacity? I want to actually see what level I’m in on interface through Audacity
I set mine at 11.
I use an old interface called Tascam us100..why do i hear hissing crackling sound when I'm recording stuff?
Hi! This was great. I have a related question: Why not go quieter than -18dbs? Is it because then you need to bump it up in post production to get up to "hearing levels"? I'm producing music mostly if that makes any difference, meaning no live streaming. I'm thinking reducing it even further would give yourself even more headroom.
does the -18 to -20 rule also apply for MIDI signals? Like inputs from a keyboard?
@kettnercreative
3 жыл бұрын
Midi is a digital signal, so it doesn't apply. With MIDI keyboards, just the note and velocity are recorded, you don't have to worry about peaking.
What does blue or pink halos mean?
I dont know if u r still replying or not But just wanted to ask a question ; I have a mackie pro FX6 v3 but I am unable to Power my dynamic even at max gain ; It barely touhces 2 on on LED Meter and very low voice is avail in my DAW ; For my p420 its ok ; But for my SV 200 its nearly impossible
Thank you for this video! Just wondering: If I have to always turn my gain up to max and speak as close to the microphone as possible and use the ins. button, do you have any idea of why this might happen? Is there something wrong with my equipment? I'm using a Shure dynamic mic with a 2 meter long cable. I wonder if the length of the cable can influence the strength of the input?
@kettnercreative
Жыл бұрын
Length of the cable has nothing to do with level. In theory XLR is supposed to run 1000' with minimal degradation. The INST button only changes the impedance of the 1/4" input, it won't help your mic in any way. 1) You might need a cloudlifter (or other inline preamp) to give you more clean gain. 2) You might have a faulty preamp, it does happen sometimes.

@@kettnercreative Wow thanks for responding! I'm surprised that the Focusrite Scarlet could be faulty. I thought it was a solid choice based on online reviews.
Hi there. Thanks for the tutorial. I connected a Shure SM58 mic to my 2i2 2nd gen. I noticed that I have to bump the gain really really high (3 o clock / 5 o clock). Is this normal with dynamic mics?
Microphone's gain is too weak? Hello So I just got a Rode NT2-A Mic with a Forcusrite sound card . So. I connect the microphone to the Forcusrite turn the Phantom power supply on, and the only way I can hear myself talk/sing is by increasing the gain/volume (whatever it's called, I'm new to audio engineering) to almost maximum, but when I do that, I get a way more than subtle buzzing sound. Now, I looked up tutorials, and the guy seems to use a condenser microphone similar to my own, and the exact same Forcurite , and his volume/gain settings are set way lower than what I have to do to actually hear me talk/sing, and also he gets no buzzing sound. Just clear vocals Any help would be much appreciated.

have the exact same problem i really don’t know why
Hi nice video ! Look i have a problem, i have bought a Scarlett 2i2 then i connected the XLR cable (for my microphone) into my Scarlett and now I can't get it out, It is blocked. I don't know if you know the solution or if somebody here knows what i can do.
How do you guys normally set the Windows device volume level? By default I think mine was set at 60 and if its turned up too high, even with no gain on the interface, it will have some high-pitched whine. Not sure if it's just noise coming into the USB interface because of bad cables, grounding, etc or what.
@Buxtonphil

where did you set it to 60? what software are you using to do that?
how can i do gain signal normal?
Hello, I have 5 questions and Im sure im not the only one. Im trying to record my voice for gaming KZread videos and perhaps streaming, I have the Podmic - xlr cable - scarlet solo - usbc to usb cable- to high end PC. I installed the drivers and software focusrite that you get when plug and play the scarlet. 1) When i try to record something with Adobe Premiere Pro the mic icon is greyed (Why?). 2) Also the Audio Recording settings of Windows 10 shows "Analogue 1+2 Focusrite Usb audio" but it doesn't show the Podmic, is this normal and why does it say analog, is not supposed to be digital? 3) On the other hand, when I record using Adobe Audition it works, but I hear my voice extremely low, even tough I have the gain knob on my scarlet solo set to max. I dont think this is normal and I dont wanna spend on a cloud lifter I just want to record a nice, clear and high monologue commenting videogames but so far it sounds like a cheap mic, how to improve the gain? 4)Thoughts about stereo/mono settings, whats the difference, do I need to change something somewhere? 5) Finally, what software can I use to record my voice at the same time while im playing games, what is the process you follow?
He Sounds Like Nrg-AceU
How do you get that thing up on your screen where you can see how high/low the gain is? How do I get that up on my laptop? I have a Scarlett too but how it didn’t come with an app for my laptop so I’m not sure how you can see the gain on your laptop?

Man I watched, understood the video and I'm still having problems setting up something as simple as micing a snare drum with a sm57 using a scarlet 2i4 ... I cannot get it to pick up a decent volume level with the gain maxed out or even a cloudlifter before the interfaces pre amp.. I'm starting to not wanna make music because it just keeps throwing me curve balls on simple recording application technique . Please help me someone. Im gonna lose my mind..... I cant hear it in my DAW without turning my monitor lvl to 9-10 which i usually monitor at a 5 lvl out of 10 .. very confused
having real issues with my rode nt1 and focusrite scarlett 2i2 with logic pro. worked alright before, wasnt loud but now its VERY quiet. peaking at -32db. Gain is up on the scarlett, 48v on; no idea what the issue is, I have changed ALL cables and same issue. When plugged into another computer it works fine, not sure what i have done. Any advice please anyone? Edit: also the mic sounds muffled/underwater. however it sounds fine on another computer. :(

Try it in a different DAW, if it works in Garageband, then you know it’s an issue in Logic. You can also do a test recording in quicktime
So my problem is no matter how high I set the gain on the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 I am still in the green. I can't even get it to go into the yellow even if I turn the gain all the way up. The mic is a Shure SM7B and yes I have it going through a Cloud Lifter. So why is the mic still so quiet?

The shure sm7b isnt good with the scarlet…dont get me wrong its an amazing mic but it needs a different kind of interface and requires alot of push in order to truly experience that microphone…get an ashton…a sony….or a neuman…
-12 or -18db? I've always known your volume needs to be at '6? Is that after post?
I have my gain cranked all the way and I'm still getting a weak mic signal. anyone have a solution? is my scarlett 2i2 junk?
Hi, Ketner. I have my Blue Yeti Pro microphone which I connect to Focusrite by XLR but also the microphone has a gain button. What should I do with that button to avoid some kind of “conflict” with the Focusrite if there I am already using a GAIN. Turn to zero? Turn to almost same position of the Focusrite gain button?
@MrArtVein
Жыл бұрын
If you're using your mics gain button, to bypass focusrite preamp, you have to use line input TRS jack. I believe on the focusrite it's called the instrument input on the front. I'm not sure how that gain but I'm not familiar with the mic you may or may not need an external power supply for phantom power if it's not usb powered.

I have a nw-800 microphone, when I connect it to my focusrite scarlett only 3rd gen, and turn on the phantom power, my microphone picks up a signal with the volume set to zero on the card, is it normal for this to happen?

It might be possible for it to pickup some signal. Typically you need to be in the 30-60% range to get an appopraite level though.

Hey I'm a streamer, and sometimes I feel when I yell its just too loud, is there anyway to set a peak? so I dont cross a certain line?
@kettnercreative
2 жыл бұрын
You're looking for a "compressor". Essentially, you can set a threshold and compress everything @ 3:1 or 4:1, once you hit a certain volume. This is a really good way to make your loudest moments a little bit quieter and easier to listen to. If you're streaming, I'm going to assume that you're using OBS? I would Google "OBS Compressor Tutorial".
