your an absolute life saver, no one explained it this well and clear as you did. thank you so much! i subbed :)
A huge thank you! I use Rocksmith 2014 to learn songs and after adding my Focusrite 2i2 DAW, I've been chasing my latency issue for over a year with no answers from Steam Community, Ubisoft or anyone else. Simply using the Direct Monitor button for mono resolved it, finally! Big, big thank you!!!!!
Thank you, the best explanation I’ve seen on the options for direct monitoring. I was hung up on needing a monitor mix knob. I can see you can mix the computer audio by controlling the volume on the computer, and headphone volume on the interface.
Fantastic. This is very helpful. I have been using them blindly and kept saying to myself that I need to go read the manual but you are solving my problem. Thank you again for your work

Nice. I read about it in the manual, but still would not have fully understood without this video
Thank you for this video. Straight to the point, as it should be.

Very useful tips. Thanks!
Helped me, thank you very much for this helpful video presentation. God bless you
Thank you! I was looking at that feature on my Focusrite last night and wondering how it worked. I work in Radio and I do a lot of production and voice work at home. I’ve got a Yamaha MG06X plugged into my 2i2 plugged into my laptop. One day I’d like to upgrade to the MG10xu, but for now it works good.
Very helpful, thanks!
thank you so much! you solved my problem. there is still delay with my microphone and I tried to fix it. but using the stereo mode solves my problem...i just needed one ear to hear the music and recording my guitar.
Thank you very much for this helpful video, would this be the same for instruments?
Very useful review, especially the topic of mixing computer output with the direct input - for singing on top of metronome or backing track.

The older versions of these interfaces had a mix knob on the device to mix between playback and direct monitoring in the fly. Real shame they removed that feature.
Thanks for the video, well done! FYI, when subtitles are on, you can't see the closeup of the Focusrite (not a big issue at all, but thought you may want to know). Kudos!
Thank you! You can't imagine how helpful it is. :"D

Great help! Thank you.
Cool stuff! Was wondering if you could possibly touch on this same idea with an older interface such as M- Audio fast track

FINALLY! Thanks for the detailed explanation. However, I'm about to sell my 2i2 coz i already got a Mackie Profx12v3. So Jordan, you think my 2i2 would no longer be of any use? I mostly do voice over recordings and occasionally guitar / drum covers. Hope you can shed a light, still thinking if im gonna let my 2i2 go.
For anyone wondering, the 1st and 2nd gen 2i2 can only direct monitor in mono natively.
Thank you for your video, II've got one question: I can see that the master volume is turned off, I was wondering if the monitor volume is independent from the master. Is there a way to switch directly from those sources? (EG: I'm listening to music from the computer trough the audio output and I want to shut it down and switch to the headphones immediately)
Liked. Subscribed. Notifications on. Your channel has been very helpful. I'll drink to that. Thank you

Nice video! Thank you. Why is it than I can still hear my direct guitar while using plugins in Logic? Even when unit is bypassed? (No light indicator). When I plug my guitar into the 2i2, and DON'T use plugins, the 3-way selector works fine; however, when using amp plug-ins, I always hear my direct signal in addition to the process signal. It's infuriating, and I don't understand what's happening. Any help would be appreciated!
do ou use the button with instruments aswell when recording guitar/bass?
So if using Logic and I want to hear may vocals using direct monitoring do I need to mute the track in Logic or change any settings? If yes is it possible to hear any vocal FX from the DAW doing this?
So if you're recording vocals and playing you acoustic guitar, it's best to use stereo monitoring so you can hear your voice in one ear and the guitar in the other? Is that a good common practice? I'm a beginner. Pardon the question. high
Hi ☺ Thank you for this great explanation. But still i have an interesting question. I currently use a TC Helicon VoiceLive Play, this is a blue object used for singing it provides many effects in stereo mode, it's not an audio interface, so my purpose is to use its two line o, and it's ok.futputs to send audio streight into the scarlett 2i2 in order to get a perfect stereo sound, so can I? because maybe this object is already a preamplifier, I don't know, is it going to damage the scarlett 2i2? same thing about the guitar, i'd like to send sound streight from the amlifier Boss Katana 50 mk ii into the Scarlett 2i2 but this time trough the jack, is it possible? is it going to damage the scarlett 2i2? as you can see, i never l just a mic or a guitar to the scarlett 2i2, is it a mistake? What if I wanted, instead, only to put the mic or the guitar into the scarlett 2i2, will I hear the sound once from the right and once from the left chanel or is it possible to provide a stereo sound or alteratively a mono sound just for the instrument in one input or just for the mic?
Question I’m not sure I’m understanding correctly, but if your streaming and you have game audio, if you turn the sound down on your computer to prevent the delay issue if your monitoring your mic, wont then prevent your audience from hearing you and your desktop
I have a Focusrite 2i2 but mine has a little metal switch to on/off Direct Monitoring. With the model 2i2 I have, would this be stereo? Personally, I've been recording vocals/songs for nearly 20 years. I've never once turned on direct monitoring. I've always kept that switch turned OFF and the big giant Direct Monitoring gain knob I keep turned all the way up. Although since it's off, I doubt that big knob does anything? Even after all these years of making music, I never bothered finding out what Direct Monitoring was for and the only time I ever used the big knob for Direct Monitoring on my 2i2 is when I have monitors connected. I haven't been using monitors for a very long time though since I live in an apartment. I strictly use headphones for everything!
is the direct monitoring available in Solo scarlett? and is Focusrite the best option for budget homestudio?
There is no mono/stereo button on scarlett 2i2 2nd generation, so basically there is only mono option for direct monitoring?
This ight be a stupid question but does the same apply when recording guitar through it?
HI, I have the problem that I hear my voice double, but only since today. It was possible to record without latency before, when I used the Softwaremonitoring. It seems that I cannot longer cut off the signal from the Focusrite 2i2. How can I use the Softwaremonitoring without latency?
What happens if you want to sing in live performance? I would like to add FX
Thank u so much 💝

will you pl guide me.The direct monitoring button does not get switched off .i am pressing the button so many times.but it indicates green light on mono part only.
What if I’m triggering drum samples/VST’s like Superior Drummer 3 from a midi controller; can I still use and benefit from the Direct Monitor to further reduce latency when listening from headphones or this has no affect?
If I want mic monitoring would I have to plug my headphones into this? Im guessing if I use an xlr mic to this and my headphones into my pc I wouldnt be able to use mic monitoring correct?
bro ive got a schiit stack running some hifimans I want to add an xlr and the focusrite , would I use rca to 1/4 cables to hook them together?> thanks much
Hello, at 02:09 if you choose to send signal from your computer, wouldn't you be hearing again your voice coming from your computer with a delay just as happened at the beginning?
I have a problem, I installed the focusrite control on my mac and now I can't control the volume with the knob on the hardware, only from the software and I don't like that, any suggestions?
Is it correct that the more expensive 4i4 doesn't have a physical button for direct monitoring? It really seems like it, but it doesn't male any sense to me.

Well, at the end of the day, even if that audio interface is not designed to be a standalone amplifier, would it be possible to connect a usb cable from a power bank (not from a computer) for power supply, then connect and play an electric guitar listening just from direct monitoring?

If I'm just using the Focusrite Scarlett Interface as a monitor when mixing my music, does the direct monitor have any effect on the sound quality I'll be hearing through my monitor headphones/speakers? Basically, when I'm mixing should the direct monitor be on or off for best sound quality? Very informative video otherwise, I have a hunch I should leave it off when mixing but just wanted to check to confirm. Thanks man!

I would leave it off unless you need to directly monitor an input.
2:19 "It's possible to send your mix to your headphones" I wish you showed how that works. I get an echo of my live vocal back from the Ableton DAW that is way distracting. I've set my track monitoring to OFF in the DAW with no success. Direct monitoring switch on my Focusrite Scarlett is set to ON. What am I doing wrong? Only way the echo goes away is if I turn the master buss all the way down, but then I can't hear the music.

@@andrecastro2776 Yes, thanks for reminding me. My problem was that I had other tracks (That I didn't want to record to) set to external input (ch1&2 of my Focusrite) and the monitoring was set to something other than OFF on those tracks; I think they were set to auto. I'm new to recording and Ableton so I hadn't been paying attention to what status my inputs were in for tracks I wasn't directly working on. My new protocol is to make sure that tracks that I'm done recording in are set to "No Input". Setting monitoring to Off on those tracks would also probably work but I'm choosing to just set them to No input. My project has dozens of tracks in it and I probably had half a dozen tracks that were left with Ch1/2 input and monitoring on auto on. So I was getting the direct monitor signal in my headphones from the Focusrite in addition to the monitor signal from the DAW with its latency making it sound like echo. So: Make sure monitoring is off in the DAW for all tracks that have an input from the audio interface on them.
Direct monitoring on works for headphones, right? (Not the regular output?)

I don't understand why I put CLARETT and this video came up....direct monitoring in Clarett is what I looking for....Scarlett is so ez to use
Can you answer a question for me? I just got a Scarlett 2i2 today and I’m super frustrated because I can’t get it to work. I bought it specifically so I can use this direct monitoring feature to hear my vocal fx while I’m recording. I use Reaper. I think I have everything connected correctly, but if I don’t press the direct monitoring I don’t hear anything even though Reaper is getting a signal. And when I do press DM all I hear is a dry voice even though I have my fx enabled on my track. I’m really frustrated about this.
@Morrow45105
2 жыл бұрын
I can’t help with getting fx through DM but you should be hearing the audio without DM on. Check your outputs in reaper. Make sure they’re going to master and master is going to (focusrite 1 & 2) . Also check preferences > driver settings…playback timing master & record timing master should be set to focusrite asio output 1. Make sure your drivers are up to date also.

When recording 1 di and Track 1 guitar at the same time is it possible to just direct Monitor the real guitar sound? The di Sound is terrible and kills the feeling
Nice. I was thinking of a different application of direct monitoring. So let me know if this will work : I have an XLR input coming from the mixer into input 1 of the interface which is to serve as the feed for my in ear monitoring, so can I use direct monitoring to listen to only the feed from the mixer ? cos this same interface is connected to my computer running MainStage and sending the output from my computer into the interface via usb but going to the mixer via the audio out (L/mono).. so how do I not chase a loop ? I mean not sending input 1 which is my in ear mix back out of the L R outputs? Can direct monitoring achieve my bizarre setup ? All thoughts are corrections will be greatly appreciated

I'm not fully understanding why you even need the Scarlett 2i2. Audio Mixer > Aux Output > Headphone Amp > Headphones (it sounds like this is what you want to monitor) Computer/MainStage > Headphone Jack > DI Box > XLR > Audio Mixer
@harold12A

@@kettnercreative yes the way you’re describing it is exactly how I mean. I was only wondering if the audio interface could double down as a headphone amp for in ear monitoring. That way I wouldn’t have two separate devices if only one of them is possible of doing both
@harold12A
2 жыл бұрын
I’m using my piano with MainStage and an audio interface. Like you described, I’m using vst so that comes out from the interface into a DI then to the mixer. But I’m only asking if it’s also possible to use the audio interface as a headphone amp as well since direct monitoring sends either input 1 or 2 straight to headphones. But thanks for your response. My 2i2 will arrive very soon so I guess I will have to try it out myself since there isn’t a clear answer to this. Cos why buy two separate devices if one is capable of accomplishing both tasks of sending audio from DAW to mixer as well as doubling as a headphone amp

Do you think people still monitor from their DAW? I guess in some cases it could help a vocalist get a track right when monitoring a wet signal, but unless you have like an RME product over ADAT with less than a millisecond of latency, it would not be ideal due to that round trip latency. I always wondered if people did that.

Believe it or not, that's the reason I came here. Direct monitoring can be very annoying if all you want to hear is your processed signal from your DAW. As for round trip latency, there's always a way to get around that. In fact, let that be the least of your worries.

Because it's changing where the audio comes from. If you switch from direct monitoring to monitoring what is coming from your computer, presumably the volume settings of your software might be different.
