How to Setup and Fish a Carolina Rig

Tim breaks down everything you need to know about rigging a carolina rig. He covers the rods, reels, terminal tackle, as well as the actual rigging of the leader and baits.
After last month's video on Summer Worm Fishing (see it here... • Best Worm Types and Co... ) we got a ton of requests for a video on Carolina Rigs.

The Carolina Rig is a deadly way to rig a worm for summer bass fishing. When the fish are on deep structure, offshore ledges, and other open areas you'd be hard pressed to beat it. Its also a great option for dock fishing when the bass move into the midday shadows.
The idea behind the rig is to suspend a weight (preferably a tungsten worm weight) 2-4 feet up the line from the hook. This allows the bait to float above the cover without the weight holding it to the bottom. When the largemouth picks up the worm it won't immediately feel the weight and will usually hold on to the worm much longer than with other rigs like the dropshot, texas rigged worm, shaky head, etc.
Carolina rigged worms can also be adapted for finesse fishing by changing to a lighter worm weight, light leader line, and a 1/0 to 2/0 worm hook. When using a light rig you can change to a baby brush hog, 4" worm, small grub, or other finesse bait to catch bass when they will eat little else.

While I used and caught fish on on the C-rig before, I really learned how to set it up and fish it effectively from a really great guide in NC. He was a big believer in long leaders--about six feet--and also almost always used one ounce weights. Since adopting that approach, I've been way more successful with Carolina rigs, and I can count on one hand the times I've been outfished or even equaled by a co-angler when fishing the rig. The heavy weight gets you down on the bottom faster and increases your feel, while the long leader enhances all of the weightless gliding attributes of placing the weight away from the bait. It's made a significant difference in both the number and quality of bites for me.

If you invert the order in which you tie your knots, you can use the palomar knot on all three connections... first, tie your hook, then tie your leader to the swivel, then you can also use a palomar knot to tie your main line to the top of the swivel. Thanks for what you & Matt do, very informative!

Concerning tungsten weights, I've heard from several anglers that when using tungsten against glass beads that the beads can eventually crack or chip because of the hardness of tungsten. You can swap plastic or brass beads if you prefer to have a bead (instead of a bobber stop) with your tungsten.

I fish the C-Rig religiously. I would say use a 6-8" lizard, 7" fluke, or a craw style bait. I use lighter weight and also how i rig it on the line is: Weight (I personally only go up to a 3/4. I tend to stick with a 1/2) Brass Clacker Glass Bead (Red or clear doesn't matter to me) Swivel (Bigger Swivel seems to work a little better) Hook (Depends on the size of bait 2/0-4/0 at max) Bait This seems to work very well here in Texas I've caught many fish on this rig. Also the rod doesn't matter too much to me I've fished the rig on a 7'6" rod and even on a 7' rod. Hopes this helps some of you out there. :D

Just wanted to comment on one thing real quick: you can tie it on with two palomar knots. You have two option for doing this. 1.) You can tie the leader onto the swivel first with a palomar, then attach the main line to the other side of the swivel with a palomar by pulling the entire leader through the loop of the palomar. 2.) This is the way I usually do it. Tie the main line onto the swivel with a palomar. Then when you tie the other end to the swivel, make your overhand knot in the other direction as the first, then just pull both ends of the leader through the loop of the palomar. Cinch it down, making sure the lines are going through the loop. I do this a lot and I ended up figuring out that this is possible, it's never failed or broke on me. Either way works perfectly.

I use the same swivels. I don't use a bobber stop though. I use a red plastic bead. The same kind of beads you'd typically see on a walleye worm rig, only just a tad bigger. I use red, blue, chartreuse, etc. Depending on water color. It's only there for a little bit of a visual indicator for the fish, and the noise it creates when the weight "clacks" up against it. Sounds like a crawdad. Sometimes I'll even take a double jig rattle, it's on a band of sorts... and I'll thread it on the line between the weight and the swivel, or in between the weight and the hook on a texas rig. It looks weird but it works. Picked it up from someone else. Just something to create a little extra noise in dirtier water when fishing a soft plastic presentation.

Tie your leader to the swivel palamor knot, tie the other end of the leader to the hook palamor knot, Now you can tie a palamor knot with the main line to the other end of the swivel, you just have to bring all of the leader+swivel and the hook through to complete the last palamor knot with the main line.

I've never really considered using a long 10+ inch worm on the carolina rig. Always tend to go for 4.5 or brush hog style baits. May have to look into trying that to better target bigger bass. As for rigging, I don't even use the barrel swivel, I use a couple of glass beads and a couple bobber stoppers above and below the weight/glass. With braid I can bend the hook out when snagged, if necessary.

Hey guys love the videos!! I to use braid for my mainline over coploymer or fluoro. I was just wondering besides the strength that you get from the braid and the sensitivity which I have found is so much better. Have you ever considered using colployer or fluro especially fishing around rocky points? I personally have found using anything other than braid I loose my sensitivity, but I do see fraying on my braid around rocks and I have to retie often. Thoughts?

I use a palomar knot at all connections. You only have to tie the hook to the leader, then tie the swivel to the other end of your leader, and then you tie to the main line passing the whole leader through the palomar knot loop. Easy as pie!

I have found that a long sweeping sidearm cast helps with distance if you don't have a rod in the 7'6" + range. I build up speed slowly from the back of the cast to the release. Otherwise you will get a helicopter. The only problem is you definitely need a little room!

You CAN tie the leader to the the swivel with a palomar knot. Instead of looping the loop around the swivel (Which you can't do due to the main line.) you simply loop it back over the leader and tag line, wet and cinch it down. The way the knot is tied you can loop either way. Give it a try. See you on the water.

I use braid too as my main line when c rigging. However I have a issue with the braid being less abrasion resistant than Floro. The weak point in this rig is the weight obviously makes contact with structure and that’s where the braid is. Braid is not very abrasion resistant to hard things such as rock and wood. I started moving the weight down to the floro leader. I peg it with bobber stops. Seems to work alright but would like something better.

Along with the bead instead of the bobber stop for noise addition, use a floating worm. It literally hangs the bait in the fishes face (since it floats your leader) and they just can not stand it. Vastly increases the bites you'll get. Also with the floating worm around grass, fish it slow. Dig your weight into the grass and just see-saw the worm for 20 seconds to 2 minutes even. Works well in the summer when grass is plentiful. It keeps your bait in the strike zone for longer and above the grass depending on leader size so they see the bait much better.

I do a lot of c rigging here in Tennessee but last year i discovered that zebra mussels have taken the lake over,,especially deep it seems and my mono is getting absolutely eat up in just a few casts. Why am I using mono you might ask.Well summer time consists of mainly night fishing here in the south so we need fluorescent line to be visible under the black lights.I have researched and found some fluorescent braid but I saw somewhere that braid is also bad about getting cut up by sharp objects,,,and that fluorocarbon line could be tougher. Not sure if I can even find fluorocarbon line in fluorescent or not or if it would be better than braid. You guys have any idea?Thank you in advance for your time. And ty for the channel,,,I watch all you guys videos!!

The benefit is that it acts as a one way stop, you wouldn't want the stoppers on both sides, just below the weight. The downside of stoppers is they typically aren't strong enough to stay in place when dragging through cover but your theory is correct, it makes sense.

If you're throwing a Steez sensitivity in the rod is not the problem. My guess is the fish are just "pressure" biting the bait and its taking a little while before you notice them loading up. That's just a feel thing that comes in time. Next time you're out set on the first few "funny" things that you feel and I'll bet you hook some fish square in the roof. Let me know if it works. -Matt

thanks Matt, I'll give it a shot. i really appreciate how active you guys are in the comments. a couple vids ago, i had asked about microbaits. you suggested an underspin. so, i picked up some coolbaits underspins and coupled them with a 2.8 keitech and it worked. much appreciated!

Just wondering if you know how long you want your leader to be why not tie the leader line on to the swivel with a palomar first, cut the leader line off the spool, then tie your main line on with a palomar and then tie on the hook? Of course this is just if you want to use the palomar knot for all the connections.

Hey Tim, we love your vids. However this one is entitled How to Setup and FISH a Carolina Rig. I somehow didn't see any part showing how you fish it. I was really lookin' for that part. Is it on another vid? What I mainly see on many fishing vids is setting up the rigs but rarely do we see anyone showing the actual movement of your rod and reel to work whatever the presentation. Then we see a hook being set and a fish being reeled in; both you and Matt have sometimes shown what you're doing but not always. It would be appreciated if there could be more demo on actual rod and reel movement. Seeing a bait moving under water is also appreciated, but sometimes we'd like to know what it is you're doing up top to make the bait do what we're seeing under water... and to see it from the cast all the way back to the boat. Like I said earlier, we see it sometimes, but not always. And this vid, it does say " ... How to Setup and Fish a Carolina Rig" ...we saw the setup, did I miss the how to Fish it part?? Your vids are really appreciated but I've been wantin to touch on this because it really would be appreciated if you'd consider more demo on rod/reel movement. Anyways, thanx for the knowledge you guys share (both you and Matt).

I found out a way to tie on a Palomar knot on both ends of the swivel. I hope you don't mind me sharing this with everyone on here. First you tie on the Palomar knot on the leader side of the swivel. Then you tie on the Palomar knot on the main line side of the swivel.

Shorter can be good. The biggest difference is running longer leaders around grass to help the worm stay above.

I completely forgot that I wanted to ask a question as well... For years I've used fluorocarbon for my main line on Carolina rigs. In the past, I tried braid but it just got shredded on rocks and caused way too many break offs. I haven't really felt the need to change this, but I'm curious about what brand and strength of braid you use and how it performs around rocks. Thanks for any info you can provide.

We're using 65 lb Sufix 832 and thus far, its done extremely well around rock. Here's the sufix: bit.ly/2ae93Ji

TacticalBassin: Thanks. That makes sense since you're basically using the same diameter braid as the 15-17# fluoro I typically fish. I sometimes find it hard to get past the pound test ratings, especially 12-15 years ago when I tried braid as a mainline for c-rigs and football jigs--I'm pretty sure I was using 30-40# braid at the time, and it's probably just too thin to drag across sharp rocks...

  • @tacticalbassin

    @tacticalbassin

You nailed it! Its easy to think you couldn't possibly need 65 lb but when you look at diameters its no different than what you're used to, it just avoids all potential problems.

  • @falconrod1

It does work to an extent, but I find you have to use a smaller weight. If you use a heavy weight just be prepared to be cleaning off the grass from the weight and bait. Also you could vary the leader length to where the bait is sitting above the grass and only the weight in digging in.

You can get bobber stops stupid cheap off Wish. They're not the greatest so I double them up if I'm using them for pegging weights on Texas rigs but they would work great for this application or just using them for a bobber stop for fishing with a slip bobber.

Lost the biggest fish of my life in and it was in a tournament. I was using braid mainline. The rocky area frayed my braid and in her third run she broke me off. Do y’all not have rocks there? Braid is not abrasion resistant enough to use as a main line when Carolina rigging.

  • @pcmcobra

tie your palomar knot on your leader to swivel first, then tie to your swivel to main line...if you "have" to have palomar knot on your leader to swivel. Then you can do another palomar on main line to swivel. Or do uni on braid main to swivel.
