Sam, this was brilliant for me as an experienced S5 user 😆 I had the front custom key set for focus peaking for vintage glass, but your tip is perfect. Changed my stroll wheel to similar custom settings as yours, including moving peaking here! The only thing I am annoyed at is that the custome keys remain the same in video mode and photo mode... Would have loved to have kept focus peaking up front for photography. Thank you!

Definitely helped - an idea for a follow-up would be how to use these settings for someone like me coming from photography to starting out more seriously in video. IE when and how to use vectorscope vs waveforms, creative ways to use focus transition (like can you use it to dolly zoom?) or how/when you might recommend using live cropping, etc. Or even reviewing vlog luts could be cool too. Thanks for making this content!
Hey Sam, I have a great idea for a firmware update, maybe you can pass it along to Lumix. Many people complain about the lack of tally light on the S5II, but in fact, there IS a tally light on the front of the camera! When you use the wifi/bluetooth feature it turns on. So all they need to do is to update the firmware so that we can choose if this light (next to the s5 logo) turns on while recording! What do you think? This could be really helpful for many people. Thanks!

Just picked this up, very impressed with the auto focus so far, also there was a slight motorized sound in the S5 don't hear anything at all with the Mark II. So helpful to have these to know all the features and customization! Thanks for putting this up. Going to shoot some musicians and a film short with this camera if anyone is interested.
As a person who just got his new s5iix today, I totally appreciate this. I’ll be following along with my camera

Sam, your video is just in time for me receiving my S5II. I loved the S5. The very best videos I've ever shot were done with the S5 and S1H. Panasonic rocks! So much better than any of the others (and I've shot them all). And your videos are by far my favorite, so clear, so helpful, so well done. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

@@SamHolland Me Too. It should have arrived today, but we're in the middle of a three day ice storm here in Dallas. A rare, rare occasion that we don't know how to handle. So our roads are empty. No sane traffic, including Fed Ex and UPS. One question for you. Have they improved the peaking? You may or may not know, but the Fuji peaking is state of the art, but Panasonic has only played games with their peaking. It's weak, hard to read, and virtually vanishes when you hit record. The one exception is the GH5 peaking. S1: unusable. S1H: okay, but only so so. If you didn't get it, I really like to shoot MF.
@SamHolland

Oh no. I hope it clears soon. Stay safe! 🙏🏻 Honestly I haven’t had much experience with peaking until this camera so I have nothing to compare it to. I’ve just been out filming with the anamorphic lens using peaking and it did ok but I always find it hard to see on the tiny monitor screens especially with de squeeze mode on
I have an S5 and most of the features fit on it. Sensational video. The best so far. A subscriber from Brazil gained.
Well done, excellent explanation of the menu items. I was especially interested in locking out the dial to keep from accidentally changing the shutter angle while filming. I learned a lot, thanks!

Fantastic video! Actually quite useful for my S5 as well, while I wait for my S5iiX to be released! Haha! Personally because I film a lot of events and weddings with this camera, I actually set the front button to Image Area of Video to change between Full Frame and APSC crops for quick zooms without loss of resolution. This is great for the times you see something happening and dont have time to change lenses but also want to be in closer. Im thinking im going to change the back/delete the operation lock. Thanks!

There are also 2 handy shortcuts AF-ON NEAR: to give priority to foreground elements AF-ON FAR: to give priority to elements in the background This is very useful for shooting through a wire mesh, to give an effect or to zap quickly from a close-up to a distant person. This is great, Thank you. You went through some of the settings pretty quickly, had to pause a lot. I found trying to set some shortcuts to the the 4 points on the scroll wheel, some presets just wouldn't take. Trying to figure out why. The manual is much harder to follow than videos. Next, looking for best audio setup practices.
That last part of the custom modes was so helpful. After using an A7sIII for the last few years, the custom mode being so rigid was always an annoying hurdle during shoots.
Does anyone know if the autofocus works normally in FHD?
You are right, You do get the most out of this gem We do TV shorts and are impressed with how Panasonic again shook the Industry with this new masterpiece great wedding machine, lenses are cheap too, and open to third party, unlike grumpy Canon 🙂 I though Sony had the best AF, well yes but this one is just as accurate, more organic. S5ii has Best IBIS (at any price), > Hours of Video without heat shut -down (reliability). Canon is always a worry. > Great color (and you can make exposure mistakes + / - and it recovers in edit better than any other ! All the pro features of a $50,000 dollar camera eg > Waveform, > Vector Scope, Horizontal level that stays on (Canon can't do it) > lowest price for highest quality, > Full frame with > cheap yet > very sharp lenses, easier white white balance than canon, better color than Sony (opinions vary) Why can't the others give us as much value ?

Hey Sam. Great, great video. Super helpful with my S5II. Thanks! I’ve ran into my first issue, however. It may be because of certain light settings that I’m in based on my environments, but recently when I try to shoot video, I’ve been seeing the zebra stripes or waves or curtain looking things on my screen. Is there a way I can fix that? Or, what am I doing wrong?

One-takes are tricky. It’s mostly to do with the practical lighting and planning you have set up in advance. You could do it a number of different ways but a good place to start Is going midway between both exposure extremes. Use variable ND filters if outside to inside etc
