The Lumix S5IIX is an extremely capable camera that can deliver many Codecs both internally and externally. I wanted to build this Lumix S5IIX cine handheld rig to accommodate both ProRes via SSD and ProRes RAW via HDMI.
Hope you like this video, and thanks for watching!

Thanks for the vid, I’ve got a basic set up at the moment on the s5iix. You’ve added about £4K of kit here! Great video but beyond my budget.

Another great video mate! I was wondering have you ever used the Leica Summicron-TL 23 f/2 ASPH for L-mount? There's very little info about it anywhere, yet it's a great focal length for FF and, of course, its Leica, so I'm assuming the quality is there too. If you have it in your collection, a review video would be much appreciated.
😮 Great man !
Fantastic
sick rig
Hey Josh, I would add the tilta side battery focus handle on the left. This would take care of SSD mounting, provide battery for the monitor, power and control a tilta nano and give much better stability to the camera. With that lens, it would be perfect.

Hello there. I have this handle TILTA TA-SFH2-97-G and my issue using it, has always been that it's a bit heavy and the camera is not quite balanced in the center. I was using it with my BMPC4k. What's your experience? By the way do this handles work with the new tilta cages for the Panasonic camera?
I’d really love to get your review on that new Kondor Blue handle with the built-in SSD reader.
For a rig that is utilising all features of the camera it looks really good! Have you done any test on how well the IBIS is with cinema lenses?
I love this rig. Its actually very similar to how I have my s5ii set up! Quick question though.. What exact lens and lens adapter are you using here? I would love to know so I can consider for my set up! Thank you!
Hi Josh. Just a quick question that you may be able to help me with. Do you know if it possible on the S5IIX to use a small USB C hub with 2 or 3 USB C sockets with power delivery function on one of them to make it possible to record to SSD at the same time as using a USB C power bank to power the camera? I would love your reply to be positive as it would be a real plus! Thanking you in advance and keep up the good work. You are an excellent teacher who explains things so clearly. Speak soon, Andy
can you explain and share the settings for the lumix s5iix? 💯
Great video, thanks for the links! And it is nice economic setup, not crazy as everyone propose with $300 handle....

@rendermanpro

@@JoshCameron And it could be ok if it really cost that much, but all that cages or handle for $200 cost like $10 bucks to produce. Handle and cage that everyone advertise cost like Ninja V, or monitor, or even CPU, just for metal frame. Like it's rocket science. Your setup is very reasonable, thanks! VND add-on with filter cost a lot though, but lens hood is looks cool, even if it doesn't do much, for "clients" it will be "professional look " :)
Nice build. Looking forward to getting the X in my hands. Can I ask why you’ve disliked using VND’s recently?
@JoshCameron
Жыл бұрын
It’s because a lot of them have horrible colour casting (even the more expensive ones). And the vignetting can be bad, the dreaded X etc …. I just find solid ND’s to be a lot better :)
Hi Josh, what is that tool you are using for screwing everthing in? Looks like a true relief instead of using al the different little scredriver things 😂

Question, when the OG Lumix or S5mkii can record Pro Res Raw via a Ninja V Recorder, is there a difference in recording via SSD or the Ninja V ? or a Ninja V+ ? it can record 8k something and so on, or do i miss something here ?
sick
Hey Josh, unrelated but have you noticed that when you use a phone or ipad whatever as a remote control using the Lumix app, the eye detect Autofocus thing stops working. Did you try this out?
@JoshCameron
Жыл бұрын
I haven’t actually tried any of the apps with the S5ii or S5iix but will give it a go 👍🏼
Hi, Josh.!The Ninja V seems to record up to 10bit. For 12bit recording you need Ninja V +. Do you confirm this? None of the videos I've seen specify the Ninja V +...
Hi - great videos. I just got a s5iix - I can't get my HDMI Raw output to work with my Atomos Ninja to record prores raw. The ninja simply says "no input" when I try. My understanding is that Atomos has not yet released the needed firmware update to use the ninja to record prores raw from the s5iix - have you had success recording ProRes raw with the ninja from the s5iix? I have updated the ninja to the latest firmware and I also have a s1 and the ninja works fine with recording prores raw from the s1. Anyway just thought I would ask as you have the same set up in the video! Thanks for the videos - they are super helpful!
I strictly do KZread videos and I'm wondering if I should opt for the Atomos Ninja V or the black magic assist. I work with FCPX. I love that the Black Magic Assist can take SSDs as well and I'm intrigued by that kondor blue and sandisk integration
@JoshCameron
Жыл бұрын
If you use FCPX then the Ninja V is defo the way to go :)
how do you get to the record button? Which mount are you using with the Tokina?
@Josh Cameron - Wondering if you've run across this issue with the MKII/X. When an HDMI cable is plugged into the camera I do no have the ability to down convert the signal, so I cannot sent the video signal to say a Hollyand TX. This is an option in the menu system that exists and becomes greyed once an HDMI cable is plugged in. Is this something you've seen?
I like how compact it is, grey for run n gun. Regarding the lens, what mount is it, which adapter are you using, & is it an expanding adapter or are you shooting in S35 mode?
@JoshCameron
Жыл бұрын
So for this build I was using a PL-L mount adapter as the cine glass is PL mount :)
Great, like it. How much...
Quite similar to what I'm planning my rig to be! For the tripod plate, do you have it screwed into 2 points on the bottom of the cage? The tilta ones are a little weird on the bottom
@JoshCameron
Жыл бұрын
Only one point at the bottom, but it doesn't spin at all :)
What’s your take on external dummy battery components?
what lens adapter mount are you using?
Great video mate. I am still confused on what Panasonic full frame to get, the S5II X or... perhaps the S1? would either be good in 2023?
@JoshCameron
Жыл бұрын
If you need autofocus then S5IIX for sure, but the S1 is still an insanely good option if you wanted to save a bit of money and buy second hand :)
Hey Josh! Does the s5 ii / x have the down convert 4k signal to 1080p for hdmi monitors? Cuz on my s5 cant use the atomos shinobi cuz that feature is missing...
Would that SSD holder work for a T7?
How do you power the ninja v? How you tried to put the tilta cage on a tripod and did it fit because I heard it doesn’t quite align!
Josh I'm worried about rolling shutter on this camera, has it ever bothered you ?
the hd cable sticking out makes me a little nervous in case it catches on something
hello. Do you know if i can power camera or monitor via usbc powerbank? i use a little osee monitor
Ninja comparable to the Black magic assist? Is the raw the same quality?
I put the iso on automatic. he doesn't go over 6 thousand. what am I doing wrong? I know that the camera's maximum iso is 51 thousand.
hey does the s5iix also lose the pdaf kn 080p50?
You should also do a gimbal rig and show off some footage
@JoshCameron

Great idea 🙏🏼
How is the hdmi lag on the monitor. I am looking at buying a Blackmagic video assist for my S5iix but everyone is talking about lag coming from the hdmi?
whtat dtap can be used for s5iix if i wanna use a v-mount battery?
❤❤
I got the handle but for some reason it’s not still, is it supposed to be wiggly?
Is the idea behind using both the Ninja V and the SSD so you can shoot raw to Ninja and back up ProRes to the SSD simultaneously? Seems like a lot of hard drive recording going on there.
@JoshCameron
Жыл бұрын
The idea is so I can have the option to use whatever recording type I like, whenever I like. It's almost like having two SD cards in your camera right? So, this way, I can shoot ProRes 422 HQ all day on the SSD for example, and then when that 1TB drive gets full, I could just switch to the Atomos and use another SSD on there, without the need of grabbing anything else :)
Hey does anyone know if I’m doing something wrong!. With my S5 when I try and map the four directions on the menu wheel dial on the camera for video say crop mode etc, recording mode, audio levels. When I turn it to manual mode those settings are still there and overwrite any custom buttons I’ve saved for photos!. It’s bloody annoying, furthermore I try snd save custom modes to mode c1, c2, c3 and it does nothing oh and it forces me into P priority mode even if I set it too M before saving the settings to say C1!. It’s infuriating.
Another Question.... can my S5 with the Ninja V record the same Pro Res Raw as the S5mkiiX ? i mean the Ninja V+ is also a thing.
@JoshCameron

It can indeed. The S5 is a brilliant camera for the money !

Hm as a davinci resolve user i cant buy the ninja even tough its relatively cheap now. I prefer braw also i don use any apple products expect my trusty old ipad.
If using the ninja why not just use the ssd slot on the ninja instead of the usb-c ? Save some space and open the usb-c port up for external battery or vmount options. Or do you think ghe pro res from the ninja is t as substantial as the pro res from the camera body ?
@JoshCameron
Жыл бұрын
There’s many reasons why you could use SSD over Atomos Recording even if you have the Ninja V. I’ll delve deeper into those in another video, but the short answer is redundancy and access to 5.9K ProRes 422 instead of 4K ProRes 422 :)
@JabDFilms
Жыл бұрын
@@JoshCameron please do im still a lil confused wouldn’t you be able to use 6k all intra 10 bit and set ninja v to pro res up to pro res hq and set custom modes to switch quickly between 6k , 5.9k and 4k ? I would love for you to dive deeper into the codecs and the difference from the ninjas … the only reason i was looking to buy and upgrade to x from the og is for the use of 6k without having to use pro res raw but i always use the ninja simply for the wonderful ssd placement

Hi, if you use the samsung t5 or the sandisk ssd then when you use atomos to record prores raw you have to switch to the ssd at the back of the atomos right? I gues it's not possible for the atomos to record to the same t5 or sandisk ssd

@@JoshCameron awesome. And I wonder if it's possible to purchase 1 SSD to use in 2 cases. 1. S5iix direct to SSD 2. S5iix->Atomos-> SSD. (Blackmagic video assist can easily do it since it has usb-c port to write data out but Atomos only has the Sata write out) Because Atomos seems only use the 2.5inch SATA drive when people normally use the M2 version SSD on the S5iix usb c. I hope i dont have to purchase 2 seperated ssd for both cases And in case of using T5 ssd for atomos + SATA to USB-C switch maybe it can be limited to record RAW or high bitrate?
I would rather use the BM Video Assist, because Davinci Resolve is the best Software atm. Also i am a bit afraid of cheap cables. I would not save money on a cable.
