@@MrD one question please, using inav 5.5.0 on dji. In ports/peripherals tab I only see dji Vtx not wtf fpv. Do I need to flash later version or will it work currently? Cheers 😊

You won’t see a WTF OSD. As mentioned in the video, for WTF you would use MSP DisplayPort. In 5.1 and earlier, that would have been HDZero VTx.

hehe, recently I found that one of my older DJI Airunits is "partly" broken. took me some time to figure out. It shows an image, the cables and ports are correct, but I don't get OSD (or even the system volts). When replacing this airunit with another one (same software, same WTFOSD state) - it works ;) Solution: moved the malfunctioning Airunit to a copter where I can live without OSD ;) thanks for the nice vid, greets, Mario

@MrD quick question, I'm using the Tbs crossfire , when I set up failsafe in i-nav do I still need to set my switches and throttle position in my radio to failsafe in case I lose radio link ? At least this is how it used to be .... thank you ahead of time

@@endliberalism4305 no. You should set the failsafe type to cut on the receiver. You shouldn’t use stick and switch positions with serial protocols. You can test by switching off the transmitter. Then make sure the parachute turns red in INAV.

Still cant get my osd to work. I am running the most recent release Inav 6.0.0 with DJI 03 air unit, goggle 2, matke h743 wlite fc and have tried both using the msp display port option with bf43compt and DJI FPV VTX options with no luck. Only thing differnt I see is when I use bf43compt in my goggles it allows me to use canvas mode in normal or hd, but still no OSD at all...

It needs to be MSP DisplayPort on the peripheral for the UART. On the OSD page, use BF43COMPAT for the video type. Check that you’re actually editing the OSD screen you’re using (INAV has default and 3 alternative OSD layouts). Also make sure the wiring for the UART is correct.

Which HD system is this for? AFAIK both Avatar and DJI will stay on low power until armed. Then use the power level you set in the goggles. HDZero used SA, but not an official implementation, so it never worked with INAV. MSP VTx is a new thing, which HDZero supports. I believe someone is working on support for MSP VTx in INAV. But it may not be out until 7.0 depending on the amount of work involved and if it breaks backwards compatibility.

Thanks for the video. You have confirmed my setup. I am using a Matek F405 Wing, updated to 7.x.x or what ever is the latest as of last week, 2/29/24. I was finding it difficult to locate any docs on the setup. I searched for a long time. Then I saw the wiring for the Matek 722, just followed that. I am using uart 5, so Rx-Tx, Tx-Rx, Right now, I am powering the Avatar off of the 4s battery connection, might be one problem, I will wire it up to the 9v pins this weekend. I started with no OSD displayed in the Fatshark Dominator goggles. So I updated to the latest as of 2/29/24. No love, nothing displayed, oh wait, what is that? I see the OSD, but it is what I would call static. I posted on the forums, read about the drop down menu in the OSD tab, clicked that, save, yes/no, NO! The reply got me thinking as he said he tried a different uart and his magically showed up. So I go back, change to uart 3, set to DisplayPort, save, reboot, Select Avatar from the drop down, save. Show up, no, still static. Put GPS back on uart 3, plug Avatar back into uart 5, OSD tab show AVATAR is selected. I go down the list of tabs, checking everything in the tab. I get to the modes tab, scroll way down, I see OSD "off mode is not configured. I set it so there is a channel selected, switch up, OSD on, switch down, OSD off. Save, check OSD tab, for giggles, save, check ports tab, all good, save reboot. OSD being displayed in the goggles, YES/NO, sort of. It is like it is being displayed on the wrong layer. I see it, but it is there, then gone, then there, then gone. I check connections, I wiggles the wires while looking in the goggles. Nope, randomly disappears, shows up. This will turn out to be a simple solution when I figure it out. The layout I see in the OSD is not how I see it in the goggles? They are in different spots from what is shown in the OSD tab. Next thing I will try is powering off the 9v pins. Could be direct power from the 4s lipo may be causing issues. I did have an over heating issue. I mounted a fan off an old ESC to the Avatar Tx. Now it does not shut down from over heating. I may try upping the voltage. I am using the 3.3v pins, I will try the 5v pins and see if a higher fan speeds helps. This weekend I will try another Matek F045 wing I have. See if I can get it working there. If it is working, that would mean something with the board, if it is the same, then it is me. I also have a Matek F411, I may try that one too. Thanks. Buzz.

If you’re seeing static, not an image. It sounds like there’s an issue with either the camera connection or the VTX. If you are seeing some of the OSD. It could be that it’s just not central. There is an option in the goggles -> display menu to move the OSD position. I had to move mine all the way to the left.

Update. I rewired the VTx to use the filtered 9v off the FC. The OSD blinks. Looks like the refresh rate is lower than the goggles. You can see it start at the top, then fill in towards the bottom. It blinks on then off. I have tried different uarts, different rates, same thing. I gave up, pulled the Avatar out, plugged in my analog, no OSD. I plugged the Avatar back in, no OSD. I think the Matek F405 has a problem. Buzz.

Awesome, I just went digital with HDzero. I’m building a 7” quad first then a ZHOD XL . Lucky I stumbled on this video. I’m finishing my second S800 with the auto launch in INAV . My question is with your sequence of tax switch assignments you mentioned no navigation modes can be on and in your demonstration you have manual mode on. Can I use acro or horizon mode? Instead of manual. Or with position hold on just switch from manual to acro and no worries.

The non-navigation mode is just to enable you to arm. This can be manual, acro, angle, or horizon. Once armed, you can select an exit mode (I use loiter). Hi Darren can you explain why the buzzer keeps beeping when I connect to inav configurator. If I connect the flight battery the beeping stops.

With the current firmware you have to use the font installed in the goggles/vrx. If auto doesn’t work, manually select INAV.

It is as good as it can be. Only DJI can make the OSD work 100%. People really need to bug DJI about fully supporting MSP DisplayPort with pilot uploadable fonts.

Thanks for the great content. When I use the O3 system and I only have two UARTS ( F11-WTE) can I Use UART2 pins for the OSD and SBUS together if both are coming from the air unit?

No, a UART can only be used for one operation. You would probably have to put the O3 on SoftSerial. Definitely don’t put critical things like control on SoftSerial.

That would be down to HDZero to implement. To be honest, I don’t know a lot about their system. But I know that Avatar does start and stop recording with arming.

No, it’s still the same situation. DJI have done nothing to fix their problems. It doesn’t look like they have any interest in doing so either. They’d rather spend the time and money to bully drone manufacturers into no longer buying their competitors products. If only they put the effort into supporting their customers.

Thanks for a good video. I wanted to ask if you had any idea about my issue in INAV 7. Using an airunit, and got all OSD elemnts showing up. But NOT the OSD Menu and it seems the Compass bar is not showing also. Any advice? Assuming some font issue

Sorry, I don’t use DJI. I thought the OSD menu should work. If you’re using the older DJI setup. Have you considered using WFTOS? That massively improves the system. The most common thing that stops people getting In to that is being the have an airplane without a rudder and don’t set up the yaw channel. That’s needed to access the menu.

Hi Darren - great stuff as always - but here's a stumper. I have a Frsky X20HD trying to run a Freestyle VTX with INAV 6.0 - I unlocked it and flashed with the most current FW and changed the port as you show. I got video and OSD immediately on the X20 screen, then cycled through the screens just for kicks and OSD disappeared (video stays) never to return! I have reflashed everything, including INAV, rechecked connections, tried different UARTS (I'm running a Matek 405) and even bought a new Freestyle VTX (I'm desperate obviously), but no change. There is a little two prong port on the side of the X20HD screen that the manual says can be used "for emergency flashing of the VRX", but there is no information anywhere on how this works. I am about ready to buy a HDZero VRX for my goggles, but the whole point of the X20HD is to use it as the VRX, so this is completely giving up - and like you, I don't like doing that. Any ideas?

Sorry. I’ve never used that transmitter and don’t have HDZero. It sounds like a problem on the VRx side. Possibly a setting. Maybe a firmware mismatch. Sorry I can’t help you. Thanks to you, my DJI 03 is now working with OSD with Speedybee f405 wing, INAV 6 and DJI goggles V2, but the OSD is not recorded...so if you loose the plane, you can't view the last GPS coordinates?

Unfortunately that's down to DJI. They only add what they want to. Which is why the OSD is not fully supported, and you may see question marks. Depending on what control system you're using. You may be able to get the GPS position back as telemetry on your radio.

with hdzero and inav 7 using msp displayport (no more smartaudio) the vtx setting shows only 3 power level instead of 4. is this setting still being used instead of msp displayport (changing channel from goggles)?

Honestly, I have no experience of HDZero. I know that INAV is no using MSP VTX to change the power and channels with HDZero. But I've not looked in to how it works or any problems. I don't have the HDZero system.

Hi, thanks for your videos. I wanted to ask how to make the dji control 2 move the bars. I can't get the bars to move in the receiver option. I have the dji o3 and it's connected to uart 5 with sbus. The OSD looks good but doesn't detect it. the transmitter control 2 dji.

Sorry, I don’t use DJI. I believe it should be set up as SBUS of Fast SBUS. But other than that, I have no experience with this system.

It's me, dumb ass Jim, reporting solution. I'd been flying drone all winter so when setting up inav plane this March I'd failed to remember I'd never to rooted the plane air unit. Did that. All's working now. Great video too. Helped lots. Thanks.

Hi, what do you think about using walksnail on softserial? I have selfbuild plane, and it was pain in the ass to build, it has matek f411 wte, and its only 2 uarts available, but i found that its possible to use softserial for osd walksnail, what do you think it will work, or i need to buy f405 flight controller, thank you in advance)

AFAIK, Walksnail will not work reliably on SoftSerial. With digital FPV systems, you really need at least 3 full UARTs.

I recently purchased a frsky x18s. I have been devouring your ethos videos. Alas I may be even more in the soup. I have a very simple glider, rudder elevator and one center spoiler. But it’s a vtail. I have sort of figured out with your videos that I should use flaperons like a flying wing as opposed to a vtail….I think. The biggest issue is that I have lived in the JR and Spektrum world for many years. I have looked everywhere for a tutorial on how to use ethos to set this up. I want to have rudder and elevator on the right stick and spoiler on the throttle stick. Can you suggest some help or a video? I have an archer gr6 receiver. This is a F3res glider so there is no motor. Thank you for your time.

Since I’ve been playing with this a bit I also don’t know how to disable the rudder movement on the left stick to prevent unintended rudder movement when deploying the spoiler. Additionally I don’t know how to change the Servo end points on the throttle.

Great video.. BUT i got a head-scratcher for you. I have a caddx Vista polar air unit... I followed your instructions and now when everything starts up I can see the inav 6.1 splash screen show up in front of the fpv view in the goggles like the OSD is going to work but then the splash goes away and no osd comes up..??? I have system voltage picture looks good the mb per second go up when I armed it... Just no osd 😢😢 Any help would be greatly appreciated Oh, and I'm using the new dji goggles integra.... Thinking that might be the problem....

I have the Matek F-405 FC. When I updated the firmware from 4.1 to the 6.1 I had these show up in the CLI as errors. Do I just change the values, or remove this from the program? set imu_acc_ignore_rate = 9 set imu_acc_ignore_slope = 5

It depends what you mean. If you mean the colour changes depending on alert level, like BetaFlight. No, INAV doesn’t support that. If you mean a font where certain things are just different colours. Yes. This should work fine. That is down to the font you upload.

You shouldn’t. You should still use DJI VTX. MSP DisplayPort has only been set up for DJI with WTF or O3. To be honest. If you’re using the old DJI system, I don’t know why you wouldn’t use WTF. It is a huge improvement for the OSD, even over O3. It is fully supported.

Follow a setup guide for INAV. It is different to how BetaFlight setup digital video. Don’t enable MSP on the left of the ports page. On the right side, use MSP DisplayPort. It does work. Though the number of usable OSD elements is less than with other digital and analogue OSDs. Because of limitations in DJI’s implementation. Only DJI can fix that.

Can I select the setting 'MSP Display Port' in any line I want ? I use a SpeedyBee F711 V3 flightcontroller and the RX and TX connection (for the VTX) is marked with R1 a T1 so should I set 'MSP Display Port' in the "UART1 - Line" or does it matter ? (In my case it doesnt show a UART5 - Line just got 1,2,3,4,6 . .... 2 and 4 are already in use)

In theory yes. But I would avoid UART 1 and 3 where possible. The can cause issues getting in to DFU mode.

My osd seem to be offset to the right.. is there anyway to adjust it left?

Yes. Use the OSD Position in the goggles Displays menu to adjust the OSD left.

what do you reccomend for using a frsky R9 Pilot FC and a DJI 03 coonectio/setup wise? pilot is basically a Matek 765?

With DJI, you won’t use the PixelOSD at all. That will be disabled.

So I have inav 6.01 and when I set up osd in inav and move things around in inav all looks great untill it goes to my 7inch screen when I plug in battery and get ready to fly. Seems to move things on top of things and all over the screen.Its useless. what am I doing wrong??? thanks in advance.

I use inav 7, and a vtx ovx306, when I select power for example to level 3 the vtx remains at level 1. This means the vtx is always at the lowest power. Can you help with this problem? Thank You

If you just want the data. You can use the blackbox. If you want the OSD, you’d need to take the VTx video output and put that to an in aircraft video recorder.

Hi Darrel. I just received a HDZero Freestyle with the Keypad board for changing frequencies. My intentions are to use INAV with my FrSky TANDEM x20HD TX that has video capabilities . I have followed your instructions for INAV set up. The system is somehow working since I can see a crispy beautiful HD transmission, but I cannot see any number or data from the OSD and the keypad is not energized , since I cannot see the channel. I am probably missing something, can you help me with some advice . Thanks Salvador

Sorry, I’ve never used HDZero. I’m not the person to ask about that system. I have no idea about the keypad. But if you’re not getting OSD. Check the wiring for the UART and the flight controller setup. With the UART, make sure to wire HDZero Tx to FC RX; HDZero Rx to FC Tx.

Hi Darren, Im setting up a 2nd wing with Inav and the OSD is not showing. The first wing is all good to go but i have the Vista on that one. I have a confirmed hacked DJI Original Air unit (2nd wing) and loaded with the MSP and 1200 mw package. Before i rooted the Air unit i downloaded to the 0606 DJI firmware. That all came thru and i did this setup as per you video and no OSD is showing in my googles. At first the "Waiting for OSD" was showing and now thats not showing anymore. I flipped back and forth with the INAV set up on ports tab and no changes at all. Im not sure what im missing. I dont have an SD card in my air unit and not sure if that contributes to the issue (no spare sd card at the moment).

HDZero - Can iNav 6.1 read the .json VTX tables? or is it a cli entry? Cannot get my OSD to display the correct ch and VTX power... thanks ;)

INAV doesn’t use VTx tables at all. So doesn’t have json or CLI entry. Ultimately, VTx tables shouldn’t be needed as the VTx should tell the FC what power levels it can output. I believe this is working in INAV 7.0 for HD Zero, via MSP VTX. I know it was being worked on. But can’t remember if it made it in to 7.0 or will be a 7.1 feature.

Hello, Why at Inav Configuration can not for AIRPLANE with ESC Bisirectional? I want build model for forward and reverse (air brake brushless for short run way)

Bidirectional DShot is not supported in INAV at all. That doesn’t mean the motor will spin backwards. Bidirectional DShot sends telemetry data over the ESC signal wire. For reversing thrust. You need to use reversible or 3D ESCs. And set up your transmitter to have centre sprung throttle.

I am still use Inav 6.0.0 for stable Aileron, Elevator and Arming for recording Vista HD in Goggle DJI V-1. And than Throttle buttom to Up for ESC Bidertional at CH6 (sleeve from CH3). Mixer insert CH6: #at Forward:Weight 50, Offset 48, Diff at Switch F Up #at Reverse: Weight -50, Offset -48, Diff at Sw-F Down. #Overide CH6 at -3 at Sw-E for Safety.

Im having issues with my avatar vtx. OSD is being displayed fine i just have no camera feed. .6mbps bitrate. Im not aure whats going on. Also slow green flash on vtx indicates a camera fault issue? Brand new vtx however i accidently ripped a solder pad off so im using the connector

The connector/solder pads won’t be a problem. But check the MiPi cable for the camera. It may have just come unseated.

hello, I can't manage to get OSD in goggles 2 for a O3 unit in INAV 7.1 although I tried all combinations. What I'm doing wrong? tk

great videos! couldn't the fonts that the avata uses be added to Inav so the OSD would be just like the avata as a workaround for the goggles 2 with the 03

No. The fonts need to be on the goggles. They are what render the OSD. The only people who can fix this are DJI.

I'm sure you're aware, but just in case, with the new Goggles 2 update, there's a new setting under Display for HD canvas mode. I tried it with my 03 Air Unit, and all my OSD icons are on the edge of the screen!

@@traviseastman8355 HD support will be in 6.1. Unfortunately, once again, DJI didn’t do this properly. If they had you could have uploaded an INAV font to the goggles and used the Avatar video type; as it uses the same size character grid.

@@MrD hmm I wounded why layout is working for me now. I didn’t change anything in inav still the beta flight compatibility mode all I switch was to the HD canvas mode on the goggles and the layout was fixed even in BFCM 4.3 the fonts still aren’t great but it’s something

I did the set up that you used for wtf and goggles v2. It didn't work for me. When I boot the goggles for connection to my Caddx Vista, I don't get the osd as set up in Inav 6.1. I get a message in the lower right hand corner that says something about font.bin. I have the 4 Inav HD fonts installed on the root of the sd card of the googles. My goggles and the vista have been rooted, Wtfos installed and the msp piece is also installed. Help!

It sounds like an issue with the WTF setup. Sorry, I’ve never used or owned this system.

I'm running INAV 7.1 which is supposed to support DJI o3. While I do get OSD, I find that the elements are not located anywhere near what they are shown in the planner. Hence I find it not usable at all.

INAV is working as much with DJI O3 as possible at the moment. The problem is DJI haven’t implemented MSP DisplayPort correctly/fully. Because of this, some icons will appear as ? as the font is not complete. None of this will change until DJI fix their system. As for the layout. You should be able to position the OSD elements where you want. On the ports page. Make sure you have selected MSP DisplayPort in the peripherals. The. On the OSD page, set the OSD type to BFCOMPAT. I believe there are 2 options for BFCOMPAT. One is for a 4:3 layout. The other is for the full width HD layout. If you find this doesn’t get it working. There could possibly be something in the goggles that you need to change. I recall seeing something about that. But can’t remember exactly what it is.

Hi, im using a matek f405std with inav 7, and o3. I have a problem with the osd, It doesn't work and I've already tried changing the settings several times, but the way you say it doesn't show up either.

Make sure you’re using Configurator 7.0.1. Some people have accidentally installed the 7.1.0 RC1 configurator, which has a bug related to setting the OSD type.

If you break off the USB connector. You can attach an FTDI adapter and still access the flight controller.

Thanks Darren, excellently clear as always but you did not mention the preview guides option. I'm interested in the comment it pops up that if you keep within the red boundary the refresh rate is quicker, how does this work? I'm interested 'cos using the HDzero VRX the horizon and home pint arrows are sluggish, I'm told that's a slow processor in the VRX and nothing can be done about it. What's your take on this? The guides are just for 4:3 ratios on some systems. And can show where the on screen elements are on other systems too. For the faster refresh with HDZero, I believe you need to set the video type to PAL. I’m not 100% on that, but believe that is how the 30x18 OSD is selected. The slow update is partially because of the processor, but also the transmission of the data. I have been told that the transmission side will be looked at. But there are other things that are taking priority.

we dont set up vtx tables in Inav? is the only way to set vtx tables or channel and band is through CLI commands?

We don’t set up VTx tables in INAV at all. The VTx knows what channel and bands they can support.

I need help. I just got a walksnail VTX & VRX and have FW updated, with sneaky_fpv fonts loaded, I have video feed (I can see) it shows walksnail OSD, Not Inav OSD. Watched this and other videos and it's not working.

Make sure the sneaky font is in a userfont folder on the SD card. They changed that a while back. When you download the firmware. I believe there is an example userfont folder that you can check out.

I'm doing good thanks Chris. I hope you are too. I guess it depends on what you class as long range. HDZero and Walksnail Avatar have both gone over 40Km. DJI is limited to 13Km (v1 and v2) and around 23Km (O3). Of course, this is nowhere near the limits of 1.3GHz analogue. But it all depends on your perspective.

I think they both have their place. There are things analogue can do and HD can’t; and vice versa. You certainly have to rethink the separation with HD, but that may actually be better.

For the HD plane, I’ve put the GPS out on the wing, the opposite side to the receiver. These are a much more similar weight than the receiver to a VTx, so will need much less in the way of balancing. Maybe none at all.

Using Walksnail and iNav 6, any idea why the OSD doesn't use the full HD display area, it only displays in the center of the screen similar to an analog OSD?

@@MrD thank you, yes, the port is setup correctly and I had selected Avatar in the OSD. Interestingly when positioning the elements on the far left side of the OSD in the HD layout, on the goggle screen they appear very much towards the centre of the screen with a big margin on the left side.

Yes, you just need to adjust the OSD position in the goggles.

Still have tons of questions. What Firmware Version should I use in googles ? I want to buy O3 unit will it work and what settings for it ? Have no idea wat is Avatar is it related to Walksnail ? How to connect Walksnail to DJI Googles ? AFAIK Walksnail is like separate digitalsystem whichis not compatible with DJI... More questions then answers :(

1. In the goggles, you should use the latest firmware from the manufacturer. The exception being non-O3 DJI. Where the WTF firmware is far superior. That is really outside the scope of this video. 2. DJI O3 has limited support from INAV 6.0, as shown in the video. The reason the support is limited is down to DJI. 3. Avatar is the name of the HD system by Caddx/Walksnail. It will not work on DJI, it is a completely different system. This video wasn’t about DJI. It was simply how to connect any of the HD FPV video systems to INAV. Using this video, HD Zero, Avatar, and DJI can all be set up.

if its not powering on at all then you probably have it wired wrong.

Power has nothing to do with INAV. That will be down to the wiring.

Some fc have a camera switch option so you dont overheat but it should be on by default in inav under modes

@@MrD the FC is a plug and play and connects directly to the 03 air unit, I don't wire anything except the GPS and the motors. If for example there were wiring issues, then why betaflight works just fine. I don't have this problem with betaflight, the unit powers on and even gets very hot

I am unable to get OSD to work. I have Goggle 2, with Inav 6.0 installed on Iflight Beast F722. The UART is wired correctly.; for port, it is set to DJI FPV VTX. The only option available for video format is AUTO, PAL and NTSC. Is this working for anyone else?

You need yo set the port’s peripheral to MSP DisplayPort. Then on the OSD page, set the video type to BF43COMPAT.

WHY DJI is not talking to the WTF guys - okay, we know why - BUT - PLZ DJI, put that fully MSP thing in the next FW - we need that sneaky fonts we have at the wtfos AirUnit ^^ - or i have to send it back - because without an osd in inav - its useless ^^

I loaded 6.rc1 with my avatar setup. But the ahi is off to the right and I can't drag the ahi around I can drag everything else like normal. Tried a fresh install same issue. Anyone else report anything like this? I can post video on the fixed wing group so you can see what I'm talking about

Hi Ruby. I’ve only seen that once myself, when I changed the OSD type. But it was fine after a save and reboot. But sure, paste it in the fixed wing group. It might help to see things 👍🏻

I have the same issue using 'Avatar' and Walksnail goggles on iNav 6RC1. The OSD is showing but the OSD elements don't align with the iNav OSD display, and the full HD screen isn't usable. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

i just ordered a Walksnail goggle set because of this. I hate you Darren...

Oh Henrik, you can't stay mad at this this face for long 😆 BTW, it's not the goggles you will hate me for. It's all the VTx that you'll need to go with them. I'm even hating myself for this lol

You need to use the inbuilt INAV font. Not auto or a custom font. Or, update to the latest beta firmware, which is much better than 33. It also fixes that problem.

@@MrD not yet on new firmware, but managed to get those parts right - kzread.info/dash/bejne/Ymqdz9ylc8y8lag.html , for VRX and VTX as well... real world flight in 5 weeks... once my arm will heal after surgery... ;)
