What do you do if the 6 digit code doesn't work. I put my PW into my Firefox account on my PC, and then it wants the authentication code, which I type in from the Google app on my phone, and it says the code is incorrect.

2fa has never worked for me. It has always locked me out of my accounts. I am very leary of it. My problem with your video is that you could be more detailed. What I need to see is you setting up a new account while you use your phone with an authenticator app. You will need to have someone to video each step showing exactly what to do. This is how you could make the video better and I would appreciate you doing this because I'm going to be forced into this. You should also show how to use back up codes incase you get locked out. I did like the speed that you did this in. thanks

Sorry to hear that...having those codes is absolutely essential!

There's a seriously important step missing from this video that is highlighted by some of the comments here and elsewhere. When you set up 2FA for a login using an authenticator app like this they should ALWAYS provide several emergency single-use backup codes that you can use in the event that you no longer have access to the app and, more importantly, the data. That can (best assume at some point WILL) happen if you lose or break your phone or other things. Using one of the codes will let you get back in and reset everything. But be sure not to run out of those codes - you can only use each one once. It should go without saying that you should keep copies of the emergency codes somewhere secure and TOTALLY different to your phone. A sheet of paper with them written down and stored between the pages of a book on a friend's bookshelf ought to be pretty secure and even survive a house fire (not if it's your friend's house, of course - so keep another secure copy somewhere else!)

Absolutely correct and I'm sorry I didn't highlight this more in the video. Another (better?) option is to setup both an authenticator app 2FA and a 2FA security key simultaneously. I prefer this over the security codes if possible.

They usually offer a manual code that you can copy and paste if you're using just one device.

Yes, you can, but you’ll need to make sure you either have the backup codes or have set up a second device in order to access the security settings of the accounts. Keep in mind that this is a second factor of authentication - the thief would still need to have guessed your password before the 2FA codes are of any use.

Agreed because I have lost my code by deleting the wrong one and can’t seem to find out how to access my account because there is no longer a code to put in to access the account that has the Authenticator.

This might be something different, perhaps. All 2FA one-time passcodes are 6 digits right now.

No, there isn't. That's why I recommend using a 2FA app other than Google Authenticator (such as Authy or 1Password).

I didn't save it in the browser. I'm just telling Facebook that this browser is a trusted browser. There's some risk in this, of course, but I prefer the convenience of not having to input a code every time I log in and I almost always have my laptop with me.

Some sites only offer SMS 2FA. In that circumstance which is generally more secure - using SMS with the reliability and fake SIM card hack issues I heard about the other day, or not using 2FA at all, and relying on good old fashion hard passwords and other security-minded practices? Also, if there's a backup method, this must surely be a case of a chain only being as strong as the weakest link and however secure the authenticator app method is, if there's an alternative way in then that's the one a hacker would surely use.

Good points here. This "SMS only" option is quickly going away, so I don't know many logins that only offers this anymore. In that case, I probably wouldn't use SMS 2FA, but that's mostly because I find it cumbersome and annoying. I'm sure it can be argued that any form of 2FA, even SMS 2FA, is better than no 2FA, though. As for the backup method, you are correct. For this reason, I don't recommend you store your backup codes digitally. Instead, I write them down and keep them in my personal safe at home.

Having started to use an authenticator app some time ago I've found recently that not all sites provide backup codes, and too many are still not offering it at all, or offer it in addition to SMS but still keep that as a forced backup option (that was what led to my weakest link note).

Great! Yes, please don’t use the SMS 2-factor authentication, it’s been proven to be very unreliable. An Authenticator app or 2FA key is a much more secure option.

@@yannickvanderputten1321 the first time you scan the QR code, it gives you the key to store it somewhere safe, and when you lost your phone you install the app on the new phone and add those keys you stored the first time. so it's an obligation to backup those keys the first time.

Thanks! Yes, Google Authenticator allows you to export 10 codes at a time as a QR code. Otherwise, you need to transfer them one by one to another Authenticator or use your backup codes. Good luck!

The main reason for not going with Google Authenticator is to improve privacy through compartmentalization. You want to reduce data linkability as much as possible. If you use all google products (as most people do) it is really easy to link all our data points and build a profile of you. If you swap some products for non-google products and compartmentalize all your digital interactions this significantly improves your privacy. Excellent Tutorial!

Without the authenticator app, the website I'm logging into will send me a text containing a verification code for 2FA. When I enter the code, the website checks to see that it matches what was texted to me. Does using the 2FA app require the organization to continually send me verification codes every 30 seconds or so? If that's the case, isn't it very bandwidth-intensive (since codes are constantly being sent even when I'm not logging into a website)?

No, the app does not require an internet connection at all for the codes. It's an offline algorithm.

Yeah but do you set this up on every site that asks for a 2 step verification code. I try and log on to milconnect and it asks for the code. I downloaded the app but how does it connect through milconnect. I hope that makes sense. When you are about 4 minutes into this video you say "If I go into my account" ... which account? It looks like your fb account but why fb? Plus, you never said to open fb. Also, what if I don't use fb? It also appear to be showing that you are on KZread playing the video. Could it be that you can go to your 'account' with KZread? When I open up my fb, I don't see the dropdown arrow that you clicked on. Also, to me, it seems like we should go to our settings within our Google account to get this 2FA code(?). Hi, in setting up my authenticator for a platform i inadvertently did not scan the qr code. Now the platform is asking for the authenticator code. I see that one should use two devices to enable & use two-factor authentication. So if I only have one device is it wise to enable two-factor authentication using my friend's or cousin's phone/device?

You say a new code is generated every period of time. How is 2FA security maintained therefore if, after setting up this form of 2FA, the user needs to reinstall the browser carrying the TOTP extension - since this would break the synchronicity between the 2FA requesting site and the code-generating extension?

The main problem for me is that not all sites are as "easy" to start that process as Facebook. My VPN provider, for example, ONLY offers Google Authentication; there is no place to make any changes to it, so when I transfer my data from my old iPhone to my new one, I cannot make that change since the security code is not transferred.

You either have to try to verify your account using another device that is still logged into Facebook, or you have to go through a lengthy process of account recovery. That’s why it’s so important to keep backups of your 2FA.

They don't require an internet connection. It's all a mathematical algorithm, so no need to worry about accessing your account while you're on holiday in another country.

My I use different authenticator apps for signing in on different devices. For instance, I will want to use my iphone, ipad pro and a windows pc for financial transactions. The most powerful app is on my PC where I do most of my trading. The mobile apps are dumbed down to very basic stuff and cant do nearly as much. I need 2FA on my PC as well as these other devices. What do I do to be able to use all my devices

What do you do if you add the 2fa on app but never scan the the QR code lodge out now trying to lodge back in but can’t…smh hope I explain that right.. just trying to lodge back in to my Robinhood

Thank you, I have a website asking for my authenticator code but I don’t have the website on my app anymore. How can I get that website re-set up with a code when I can’t login without the code?

You can't. Can you try using another device that is "known" by the website and then deactivate 2FA from there?

I recently changed phones and I was trying to log in into Kraken with this method and it was saying the 2F Authenticator is invalid so I deleted the app to set it up again. Now I don’t have access to my Kraken account to edit the settings and get a new QR code :( (it needs the 2Fa code which I don’t have set up? Is there any way I can fix this so I gain access again. :/

Can you help with this: What if I did not save my Key at the time of setting up 2FA for a financial account…. I had no idea what I was doing 2 years ago when I set this up

Sir did you explain to everyone here if you lose the device and didn't take the precautions to safeguard your second code that your basically locked out forever? I think Its an important step.

I agree. I may make another video about that, but I don’t think it will be very encouraging. It’s very difficult to recover an account where you’ve lost your 2FA code.

I have a written copy of the 16 digit authenticator code on my old phone. Can I just install google authenticator on my new phone and manual enter the code that I have written down from the old iphone and enter it into the newly installed authenticator? Will the old phone work at the same time I have the new phone on? thanks

It should work as long as it’s the manual code and not the backup code. And yes, you can use that same Authenticator code on as many devices as you want.

All Things Securedonfused. what is the backup code? I have a 16 digit code that I tested by reentering the code and it duplicated the 6 digit authenticator code that works. I’m confused.
