    Good video. I'm trying to fully understand the autofocus system in the R7. One method I'm trying (as used by another bird photographer) is to toggle eye detect on and off with the DOF button on the front of the R7. I'm liking that pretty well so far. I agree with how you use Spot Focus and have mine set up that way.

Would have liked to hear a little bit about that Multi-Controller Direct AF Point Selection set to ON so joystick is active... What does that do? I'll research this but would have been nice if you said just a little bit more about what it does. Thanks again.

    Turning on direct AF point selection makes it so you can use your joystick to move the focus point wherever you want it and then you can click the joystick down to recenter it. Hope this helps and thanks so much for watching the Chanel.

    Thanks for making such a detailed video. I Like the idea of having both spot AF and the EYE Detect separated. I have one question though. When I clicked the AF area to change it to AF Spot, some of the options in the menu where not highlighted. I could only select (AF Spot) (Expand AF area) and both custom [1] and [2] were available. I did select AF Spot but I'm not sure if I've done something else that would cause the other menu items to become unavailable. Not sure if you can help but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks again for your help.

    Hello! You’re very welcome glad you found this video helpful. It sounds like you must have limited your auto focus choices because with this setup you should be able to select any of the main auto focus settings it shouldn’t limit it. When settings start getting screwy I recommend to people to start by resetting back to default settings and then walk through the setup again that usually clears up any previous settings that may have been changed around accidentally that cause weird issues like this.

    If you go to the orange menu on tab 3 you will see an option “clear customized settings” so if after you have saved the custom buttons into your C1-3 settings you then switch back to manual mode and go to that option you can clear the custom settings out and then manual will work like it did out of the box. This way if you want the traditional front button focus it’s there in your manual mode and if you want the dual back button focus you just quickly flip to C1 and bam you got it. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Lol hope that helps if you need more help just ask.

    Thanks for this video! This settings are good only for moving subjects like birds in flight (servo mode)? What if I want to shoot a stationary bird? Like a standing Heron for example. Servo mode will still be good or is better to change to One Shoot mode?

  • @PPNJ

    @PPNJ

    Жыл бұрын

    Better to keep it in servo mode in my opinion even if the bird isn’t moving theirs still always slight movement either from the bird or even ourselves moving the lens just that little bit when hand holding. That would throw off the focus if we were to use one shot even from very slight movement because one shot locks the focus on one position and won’t readjust after even if something moves including ourselves and we’re never 100% still when hand holding. In my opinion one shot should be used on still life shots when using a tripod. Hope that makes sense and thank you for watching the channel!

    Thanks for the nice, concise directions. I was a bit confused by one thing, though. When you assign the * button to eye detect autofocus, does it automatically turn on subject tracking? I ask because I notice that subject tracking was set to off in the AF menu. Thanks again.

  • @PPNJ

    @PPNJ

    Жыл бұрын

    Yup! You’re understanding it correctly. We have subject set to off this way the AF-On button only triggers the spot AF (or whatever you set your auto focus mode to) otherwise tracking overrides it. We now trigger subject tracking with * button. Thank you for watching I appreciate it. If you ever have any other questions don’t hesitate to reach out!

    @@PPNJ Thanks for your prompt reply. I didn't realize that eye detect AF (*) turned on subject tracking. So your set-up is considerably simpler than what I was using, where I assigned * to register/recall shooting functions, which allows me to assign multiple options to one button. Thanks again.

  • @bretapplegate1882
    @bretapplegate1882 Жыл бұрын

    I'm a little bit confused about subject tracking vs eye tracking. I thought they were two separate things. Does eye tracking use subject tracking? Can you not use subject tracking without eye tracking? It seems like in your setup, the latter is not possible.

  • @jorisdijkema
    @jorisdijkema8 ай бұрын

    You have set * button for Eye Detection AF. That automatically means that the camera is going to track the subject? And if it finds the eye it will track the eye and if not it will track the subject itself? Or does it not do anything when it cannot find an eye? And if the * buttons fails to track the subject, you use the AF-ON button to focus with the small spot on the subject AND you have to keep that little spot on the subject when it moves by moving the camera yourself (because tracking is set off in the menu). SERVO is set however, so as long as you keep the little spot AF on the subject and keep pressing AF-ON button, the camera will focus on the subject like we did with DSLR's. Is this all correct?

  • @PPNJ

    @PPNJ

    8 ай бұрын

    Yes you are understanding it correctly. If the eye tracking software doesn't detect an eye it will grab the head if no head is detected then it grabs the body. If it fails completely then use the AF-on button like a traditional DSLR focus system. Also the single small point can be changed to anything you prefer I like the small spot because I can use it to focus on the eye between branches if the tracking isn't working but you may find having the larger square with little ones around it work better in other situations. Thanks for watching and hope this helps you a little bit. Happy shooting!

    Yellow tab (wrench) look for “custom shooting mode (c1-c3)” that’s where you can save your settings to the c settings. Remember everything gets saved Including your shutter speeds white balance everything so set it up how you want it exactly so you can flip right into this mode. Hope that helps. Question. Why turn off the subject tracking? Thank you.

  • @PPNJ

    @PPNJ

    2 жыл бұрын

    I know it’s counterintuitive at first but the reason is we are setting the main (AF-on) button to not track but just for spot auto focus and then the (*) button becomes how you activate your subject tracking. If you don’t turn it off then both buttons trigger tracking but we want just spot available when tracking fails us. Hope that makes sense and thank you for watching the channel!

    Why set the AF Area to Spot? That seems like a very small focus point and doesn't much room for leeway. Is this just a personal preference setting for you? Also "Subject tracking to off" is that because we are setting eye tracking instead?

  • @PPNJ

    @PPNJ

    Жыл бұрын

    So it is somewhat a preference thing you could substitute it for anything you would prefer but hear me out on the why I do this. So we map the tracking to the * button so that allows us to use the AI software canon uses to asses the whole area then find an eye for us and a lot of times that works very well. The spot focus (very small area) is intended to give us complete control of where the focus goes. I use the small spot because most often this occurs when the frame is busy like a bird I want to focus on but theirs a lot of branches around it confusing canons ai eye tracking software. This is why I use the small spot. I can put it right through the branches get the eye of the bird and a lot of times once I’ve directed the AF in this way I can then try the * button and the tracking will now lock to the eye again. So I find it very helpful to have the small spot as my fall back method or AF correction method if you will. Theirs nothing wrong with you substituting for something that works better for yourself though. I hope this explains my thinking for this setup a little bit. Give it a try though and once you are completely used to it I think you will find it beneficial.

  • @PPNJ

    Just noticed the why eye tracking off question. So if you leave it on then the spot focus we set will get overridden by eye tracking. With it set to off when you trigger spot it will stay just spot focus no tracking at all which is what we want because we set this up so the * button triggers the AI eye tracking focus capabilities. Thank you for watching the video and asking questions. Really appreciate you being on here.

    I realize that I’m definitely in the minority here, as I don’t actually photograph birds. I live near Pensacola, FL and love photographing the US Navy Blue Angels practices and shows. I’m currently using an 80D with the EF100-400LII and have reserved an R7 rental for a week at the end of October (the soonest available). Anyway, obviously my set up with the 80D is much simpler than it will be with the R7, and I do want to check it out via rental to make sure it’s the camera for me before spending $1,500 on one. All of the set ups I’ve read about have been mainly for birding, with some sports and even auto racing. But I haven’t seen many fellow aircraft/airshow enthusiasts. Has anyone photographed any aircraft (preferably fast moving jets) with the R7/EF100-400 combo? If so, how were your results? And could you please at least point me in the right direction re: setting up the AF? Thanks in advance.

    Hey so I don’t actually own the R7 my friend does so I’ve been able to use it since release day and the AF is very very similar to my R6. I’ve photographed planes in flight with exactly my dual back button AF setup but you switch the subject from animals to vehicles and it grabs planes no problem at all. Mix that with the crazy fast AF and insane burst rates and I think you’re going to be in for treat when you get your hands on that R7!

    If the R7 can excel at small birds, I'm sure it can excel at the birds with motors. The Custom AF Areas act as "closest to the camera" AF. I would set it at that, and you should be good to go. I have an airport near me and practice on the planes with this setting and it works very well.

    Why subject tracking “off”???

  • @PPNJ

    @PPNJ

    Жыл бұрын

    That’s a good question. It seems counterintuitive at first but if you have it on it will override the spot auto focus we map to the af-on button. We map the subject tracking to activate with the * button so no need for it to be on since we customize the buttons to trigger it when we want it. Hope that makes sense and thank you for watching the video. Anymore questions just ask. I’m happy to try and help.

    As far as using a back button to start and controlling focus. Why use two fingers to do what can be accomplished with just one finger. Use anything that makes photography fun and easy for you. We are all different, I have worked for nearly half a century in photography field, even before all this b.b.f., auto focusing Era. I have seen things come and go. For me b.b.f. is not something I embrace. Much like auto shutter,aperture or programmed control. I like doing things myself. Customisable rear buttons have many other uses I prefer over focus control. Number one reason for bbf: Just hold the back button to track a moving subject, or release it to lock focus on a still subject. Additionally, you can avoid accidental refocusing when you recompose your shot or when something comes between you and your subject. A better solution most professional photographers use. Back button a.f. lock or on Canon back button a.f. off. It works in the same principle, only you press bbf to momentarily stop auto focus. Releasing it when you need to track focus your subject. You can also use manual focus without turning off the autofocus system; just focus manually with the lens focusing ring. Only available on certain lenses- a.k.a. one touch focusing. Note:Generally, I leave tracking on and Eye Detection off, since most of my wildlife is moving. On the R7 at least, I've found that Eye detection isn't as consistent as it is on the R3/R5, so for Birds in flight or rapidly moving animals it's better to be able to quickly get on target and let tracking follow the subject. I get a higher keeper rate this way. For static/perched animals, I usually have time to toggle Eye Detection on and if it is still having difficulty latching onto the eye, I can always turn tracking off.
