How To Set Up And Use Parallel Compression In FL Studio (Parallel processing)

Музыка

This tutorial will show you how to set up and use parallel compression in FL Studio. This is a very usefull technique that everyone should learn. This is one of many small "secrets" the professionals use to achieve that "pro sound".
Parallel processing or parallel compression in this case, is often used on drums, and vocals. It can make drums sound punchier without loosing the transients. Vocals can sound more consistent and more powerful, without loosing too much dynamic range.
If you haven't seen it already, make sure to watch my video explaining what parallel processing really is all about. You can watch it by clicking here: • Parallel Processing Ex...
Note: You can now use patcher to accomplish the same thing much easier.

    No such thing as a clear and precise tutorial like this one. What makes it yet better is the fact that he is teaching a MIXING CONCEPT/PHILOSOPHY with a simple stock plug-in and not just making a fancy plug-in showdown. I think this powerful technique gives more natural, analogue and organic results compared to bare compression. Simply groundbreaking, thank you very much!

    Thanks! Glad you liked it :) I always try to keep my videos short and to the point. Most of my videos are between 2-8 minutes long. Unfortunately I get punished by KZread for doing that. The algorithm prefers longer videos that keeps people on the platform for longer, which is why this channel grows slowly. This is also why most KZreadrs intentionally waste your time, by making needlessly long videos, to get more watch time, which will be rewarded by the algorithm which will then show the video to more viewers and so on..

    FireWalk , I had a question..Is it needed to moderately eq & compress snares and kicks in their original tracks, before sending them to the dry and wet tracks? Like Im using my own drum sequence that Iv made using piano roll and the sample sounds from drumkits in Packs. I find these sample sounds have lots of unnecessary frequencies, so I filter them. Should I skip that step in this technique??

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    If you compress the dry track it will defeat the purpose of the parallel compression, as the goal is to maintain the transients as well as getting a punchier sound by compressing it. Unless you want to combine two different compression techniques in one sound. You're basically just splitting it in two, and compressing half of it. You can always EQ the dry track of course, it, that's no problem. :)

    I love watching your videos. Really well explained and straight to the point. In this video though, I’m not really sure what purpose the drum loop dry channel achieves? There is no compression or effects on the channel so isn’t this just a duplicate of the original drum loop? Could you not use the original drum loop as the dry loop??

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    Hi, this video is intended to show the parallel processing process, using compression as an example. Most people will just load a compressor, or any other plugin on a track and then be done with it. That means the plugin is affecting 100% of the signal. Parallel processing is all about using both signals at the same time. So you have one channel with just the original dry signal, with no processing whatsoever, and another one with the processing on it. You can then adjust the dry/wet level between them. This is a technique used a lot on vocals, for example, to retain the transients, while still adding compression. You can get the best from both worlds. This is the old-school way of doing it. Most plugins today have a dry /wet knob that you can use, which is much easier. For compression, 50-60% wet will often give an outstanding result.

    Is it possible to just tweak the compressor’s mix knob “in the effect chain” to get the same kind of results? (Not the compressor’s internal mix knob)

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes it is, but Image-Line don't recommend touching that knob because it can cause PDC issues which again result in phasing and such. Most modern plugins come with a built in wet/dry knob and it's better to use that knob instead as it won't have the same issues. This video just showcase the old school method of doing it, and explains what's actually happening.

    Hi would the transient processor like the one in FL Studio do the same thing as parallel compression.

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    5 жыл бұрын

    The transient processor is basically a simplified compressor with easier controls. It has two main knobs which you can use to either enhance the sound. The first is the attack, which controls the transients, which is the first part of the sound. The Attack of the sound (the click / transient of the sound). The release controls the body of the sound. If you turn it up it adds more weight to the later parts of the sound. If you use on a kick for example it becomes more boomy. You can read more about the transient processor here: www.image-line.com/support/flstudio_online_manual/html/plugins/Transient%20Processor.htm

    That's right :) That's definitely the easiest way to do it. Awesome explanation! But couldn't you just use the send (or insert) function to do the same thing, instead of having to make 2 new channels?

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    7 жыл бұрын

    Alex, the dedicated send tracks to the right in the mixer has been removed in the newest version of FL Studio (12.5). The reason for this is that in FL any track can serve as a send track. They are in reality no different from any other track, they are just tracks with a sidechain, docked to the right. So it doesn't matter what track you use. :) PS: If those docked send tracks are a vital part of your work flow, and you want to continue using them the same way in the newest version, you'll have to sidechain all tracks to 4 dedicated sends, and then dock those 4 sends to the right and save it as a new template. :)

    My question is when both signals are blend together or playing together , are't they having any phase issues?

  • @FireWalkMusic

    @FireWalkMusic

    5 жыл бұрын

    The alterations to the waveform will usually be sufficient to prevent that, but not always. In that case you would have to try to reverse the phase, or push one of the signals a bit out of time by a few ms. I know there's also phasing issues involved when using the mix knob in the mixer itself, which is why IL doesn't recommend using it. If you are using third party plugins, they usually have a built in "mix" section, where you can adjust the level, and that's the best option. It will prevent phasing issues and is overall the quickest way to do it. The method shown here is the old school way of doing it.

    Why did you need to make a drum loop dry channel? If your original drum loop track (channel 1) is going to the master wouldn't that be your dry channel? Couldn't you do a send return to the wet compressor channel (channel 3) and get the same effect?

  • @FireWalkMusic

The dry/wet knob on the mixer doesn't always work properly for all plugins though, so I decided to show the old school method of doing it, to better illustrate what's actually going on. Most decent plugins these days have a dry/wet knob built into them, such as the fabfilter pro C2 for example, which makes this very easy to do. :)

    You mean pdc issues? PDC stands for plugin delay compensation. It's a feature built into daws which help keep everything in sync by calculating the latency created by the various plugins, and adding the appropriate delay in order to give the cpu time to catch up an keep everything in sync. Some times it can fail though, especially in older versions of FL Studio. The newest verisons of FL Studio had the PDC system redesigned, so there's far less issues with it now.
