How to Set Up and Use a External Drive for Both Mac & Windows

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I show you how to quickly format your external drive, set it up and make it ready to use with both Mac OS and Windows PC simultaneously.
Step 1. Open "Disk Utility"
Step 2. Select the External Drive
Step 3. Select Erase
Step 4. Format Type select "ExFAT"
Step 5. Hit Erase and wait till process is complete
Step 6. Enjoy!
Best External Hard Drive - amzn.to/2DM22Ai
Note:
Most external drives you buy will automatically be formatted in NTFS which is a Windows file system. Macs can only read but not write to a NTFS file system. So if you want your external hard drive to be able to read and write from Mac OS and Windows then you need to reformat it with ExFAT.

Excellent video. Short and precise. I just did it with my 2Tb Seagate. It worked, took me like a minute!!! I also added files from both Mac and PC to check!!! Thank you!!

So for the first time ever, I’ve set up an external hard drive from a third party instead of a Time Capsule as a back-up disk (working with Time Machine). Upon recognizing this hard drive, my Mac created an icon on my desktop. The same happens when you plug in a USB drive. But... after using your USB, you should eject it safely. Should I do the same with the external hard disk before shutting down my Mac?

This was way too fast for a Mac beginner. You didn’t even say what the spotlight is. Next time please zoom in on the areas of interest. It’s hard to follow on my iPhone. You know what you are doing; now try to explain it a bit better to a beginner!
