thank you for sharing this video. The set up looks like a non techie like me can do it. You have an easy delivery to follow and a calm voice explaining the process.

How much charcoal do you need to start before using the digiq. Just a little or more?

You really don't need the digiQ for temps that high. I'd just use it if you're going low and slow. It'd take more time to tinker with all that for a fire that hot then it would to just get the fire up. Where it's handy is maintaining 225 for smoking food for hours. Well intentioned but this is off the mark IMO

I use it for anything up to 350. But above that I would agree. I will sometimes use it to get it going, then pull it to do steak/pizza etc.

What is the lowest temperature you have been able to maintain?

Thanks. I contacted the company, which says the unit will register as low as 150F, but whether a Green Egg can stay lit at that temperature remains to be seen.

You didn't say if you put the lid that has the adjustments back on the top of the Big Green Egg.

sorry, yes the topper goes back on. Low and slow only needs to be open a tiny amount - maybe a quarter inch on each vent.

    Why never use briquettes?

Anything like the old fashioned Kingsford briquettes contain additives that infiltrate the ceramic and ruin it over time.

Do you keep the top closed?

  • @darrellbaker516

+Jordan Christopher No, you keep the top open similar to what you'd do normally for the desired temperature. The bottom vent closes around the DIGIQ panel, the top needs to stay open to allow the air to move through. For low and slow 225-275, you almost want it completely closed. 350 you can have the smaller holes opened. The digi Q only goes to 450. If I'm searing steaks, I 'll start it with the DigiQ to 450, then pull it and open both vents to crank it up to 700+.

HouseofChains81 the unit is not waterproof, however it can be dismounted in seconds after you've done it a couple times.

thanks for the info. Do you use it? Is it worth it? Does it get to your desired temp quick and burn off the "bad" smoke quicker?

HouseofChains81 I definitely use it every time I light it up. Some people don't like the gadgets, but I would never use the egg as much as I do without it. Sometimes I struggle to get the fire going if theres too many small charcoal pieces. With this, it doesn't matter. The fan will keep going until you've reached the set temperature. Plus with low and slow cooking, you can literally walk away for 8+ hours and know it will hold temp. I can see the display from inside the house - even at night, so I don't even need to go outside to check the meat temp. It does top out at about 500 degrees for a set pit temperature, so after that, you have to pull the probes. But it will get you well on your way fast. If you just want more reliable starts for less money than the DigiQ, the EGGSelerator is an option that just blows air - doesn't have any of the electronic controls. The DigiQ is a fairly expensive accessory, but I wouldn't get an egg without it. That's just my personal experience - not trying to be a salesperson here. One other personal tip - don't leave the meat probe dangling where the dog can reach it. Evidently its fairly tasty after coming out of a pork roast! Fortunately the dog just chewed it up, she didn't hurt herself. But the replacement was about $40 if I remember correctly.
