Start Big Green Egg 750 Degrees in 5 minutes

How I start my Big Green Egg.
I wouldn't try this if it is cold outside, it could crack.
Please be careful.

This is brilliant! I just got an Egg and already have a side burner on my propane grill. Thank you!

I concur with the others. Using the sideburner of gas grill was for chimney starter was ingenious!

I burnt off my gasket accidentally while "burning out" my egg after doing a bunch of greasy long low temp cooks. My neighbour distracted me with beer or two and when I got back to the egg it was glowing on the inside. And I mean glowing- conservatively, it was easily over 1200 degrees in the BGE. Usually, I light the egg with a heat-gun but have gone back to a chimney starter to save time when wanting a hot egg. Thanks for the stack idea! Will definitely incorporate this tool into my routine.

Went to Home depot and got to pieces of ducts to create the chimney and it works like a charm. Also works on chimney starter. Put it on and a few minutes later the flames are rolling up.

There are blowers that fit into the intake of the BGE; a bit more expensive and slightly slower, but perhaps safer.

Just wondering if the high-temperature gasket can take sustained 1200 F. Also, how long will 1200 F last for a given amount of lump charcoal? With a Weber kettle, it takes at least 15 minutes to get up to searing temperature, but the temperatures drops immediately at the point.

If it's clean and you have good air flow you can keep it around 550. But most of the time 400-450 is about the best you can do. Only danger is when it's really hot 500+ and you close the stack to reduce flames then a few seconds later open the lid.

Get a open stainless steel fire grate on amazon and a looftlighter. Move all small used charcoal to bottom of egg. Light top side normal with looftlighter. Shut top and jam looflighter in air hole in bottom. It lights the small stuff and makes pushes hot air into egg. Just watch gauge climb quickly. No need for side burner or hot metal.

Cracking occurs due to thermal shock. You would have to be cooling it rapidly, not heating. Probably why he said not to do it when cold out.

I’ve never cracked mine doing this, but it prob would if you just left it wide open for 15 minutes . However doing a clean burn with a hair dryer did crack it to bits. Didn’t wait long enough for the ceramic to get to temp.

It creates a strong updraft that pulls more air into the bottom. Basically turns your grill into a rocket stove.

Why would you want your Green Egg at 750° anyway? 750° is only used for a Burn Out. ( Cook The Dirt, Oil, Etc out of it ) You can't Smoke or Cook at that Temp.
