    I hope you all enjoy this tutorial! One thing you'll notice that I did wrong at 5:52 was that I entered "AlexaPi" instead of my "Security Profile ID". Oddly this didn't stop Alexa from working when the setup was complete, but it was something that I wanted to highlight in-case anyone was confused as to what to enter - enter your Security Profile ID! If you're experiencing the vlc-nox error, change *vlc-nox* to *vlc-bin* in the *./AlexaPi/src/scripts/inc/os/**debian.sh* file. For more information about this change, I've updated the written tutorial linked in the description, which explains how to do this. All of the commands, instructions and links you'll need are in the description and also the written tutorial which can be found here: richardtech.net/2019/03/alexa-on-raspberry-pi/. If you have any issues with AlexaPi once installed, they have quite a large amount of documentation which can be found here: bit.ly/2VtNKc9. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for this. I've been tearing my hair out using an outdated tutorial, so kudos to you for this one. Makes the entire process much easier. NB, if you fresh install (as i did) with NOOBS 3.0.0 and then perform updates, it seems to break this process as it tells you that you are not in the /opt directory and are not installing AlexaPi in there. I tried again but didn't update this time and it's worked.

    That would be quite cool. I'd imagine that you would be able to pair a Bluetooth speaker (although you may need to go back into the desktop interface to do that), but I'm not familiar with using a Bluetooth microphone on Raspbian. Looks like it would be something cool to look further into and try out. Thanks for watching!

    I'm glad you like the video. Unfortunately, due to the nature of AlexaPi being connected as a developer app, Alexa has more limited functionality and less than a device such as an Amazon Echo - so what you are looking to do may not be possible. Thanks for watching!

  • @RichardTech

    @RichardTech

    5 жыл бұрын

    I *think* if you have an Amazon Echo device, AlexaPi can use your Echo device as a hub to control your smart devices - but without an Echo, the functionality is limited due to restrictions from Amazon. I haven't been able to try this myself, but have seen this information online. Thanks for watching!

  • @RichardTech

    Due to a limit from Amazon, Alexa skills functionality is extremely limited so it is unlikely you would be able to do much of what you could do on an Echo device, you will only be able to mess around with some basic functionality. Thanks for watching!

    Hi Vincent, at this point you should have a URL displayed in the terminal that you can browse to connect your Amazon account to the Alexa service. The IP address you'd need to enter would be your.pi.ip:5050 (replacing "your.pi.ip" with the IP address of your Raspberry Pi), or if you want to sign in using the browser on the Raspberry Pi itself you can type in localhost:5050. I hope this answers your question, thanks for watching!

  • @RichardTech

    @RichardTech

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@vincent5688 You may be able to use the recovery command line but I'm not sure if it will allow you to configure AlexaPi, if you can't you may have to unfortunately start again from scratch. To access the recovery command line turn on the Raspberry Pi holding the Shift key and press Alt-F2 once NOOBS loads. Login with root as the username and raspberry as the password. If you're able to configure AlexaPi that's great and then you can shut down the Pi with "sudo shutdown -h now". The AlexaPi configuration files have their locations found at: github.com/alexa-pi/AlexaPi/wiki/Configuration-file You should be able to edit them using nano. I'm not sure if this will work but you can give it a go.

    Hi Ron, I'm glad to hear that it's up and running. It's been a while since I've used AlexaPi myself, but hopefully my comment can help. Under "Post-installation steps" on the Installation page of the wiki, it mentions changing the playback handler from vlc to sox if playback is choppy - so I think that may be the best thing to try at the moment. To do this you'll need to edit the configuration file which is normally found at /etc/opt/AlexaPi/config.yaml. You can open this up in the nano editor using *sudo nano /opt/AlexaPi/config.yaml* and changing the *playback_handler* from vlc to sox. I hope this helps, thanks for watching!

I'm completely new to all types of coding so am just following instructions as given, so no idea what this means. I should add that I've tried running it twice, and still get the same error. Thanks

  • @RichardTech

    @RichardTech

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Nick, I've done a bit of searching for you to try and figure out why this would be happening. A few people have said it's due to network/connectivity issues but someone managed to get it working by using this command "sudo pip2 install python_vlc" which I found at bit.ly/2Uw4Idd. I'm not sure why this would be happening entirely and it's definitely odd why it would happen twice if it was a network issue, but I hope this at least helps the setup progress further for you. Thanks for watching!

    I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I'd recommend ensuring that Raspbian is up to date and trying again. Sorry I can't be of much help, thanks for watching!

    Hi again. Once I´ve finished all the steps and rebooted raspberry, what do I have to do to talk to Alexa?

    All you should have to do is say “Alexa” into your microphone which will activate Alexa, then you can ask the question you want to ask.

    Thanks brother ..however i am getting below error and the script stops without asking for any id details .Could you help!Package vlc-nox is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source However the following packages replace it: vlc-bin E: Package 'vlc-nox' has no installation candidate

  • @RichardTech

    What you'll need to do once you've cloned the git repository is change *vlc-nox* to *vlc-bin* in the *debian.sh* file. Which can be done by editing the file with *sudo nano ./AlexaPi/src/scripts/inc/os/**debian.sh* . I hope this helps, thanks for watching!

    Hi, I have one problem at installing AVS. I see that: E: Unable to locate package vlc-bin E: Unable to locate package vlc-plugin-base Do you know why ? I must have firstly installed something on Raspbian before install Alexa?

    Your Raspbian installation may not be up to date, make sure you're running the latest version of an up-to-date Raspbian install for this tutorial and update your package lists with sudo apt-get update, that should allow your Pi to find vlc-bin. Thanks for watching!

    As far as I know it hasn't been changed, the default option should be correctly populated. The vlc-vox will need changing, though, I've mentioned this in the pinned comment on the video as an additional step is now required. Thanks for watching!

    This will be the username and password for your Raspberry Pi, if you have not changed it the default is "pi" for the username and "raspberry" for the password. Thanks for watching the tutorial, if you found the video useful please consider subscribing!
