I got a few requests to show how we set up my dad's removable winch system. Here's the video showing how we did it.

Another receiver mounted in the cargo area would make for a quick, secure mount for the winch. another great vid.

it really works great when you have more then one vehicle youd like a winch on. ways to make it faster would be have both front and rear wires pre-wired and hanging there (this is what i have) and then for storage, i take another reciever tube, weld it to a fair size plate (to spread out the load) and either weld the plate or bolt it to your floor. you can pull the winch out and be ready in under a minute with this setup.

I have a similar set up on my truck. I love being able to mount it to both the front and back of my truck. I used a 2" hitch receiver inside my truck bed to mount it during storage. It makes for quick removal, So it doesn't go bouncing around My truck bed.

I think the pros WAY outweigh the cons. The ability to pull from behind or from the front, swap the winch to other vehicles and as you noted help prevent theft are invaluable. Here's another slick thing I do. I have a receiver mounted to my flatbed tilting trailer. This allows towing a dead vehicle onto the trailer for tow ! The receiver mounted winch is way to versatile to look over !

I have a similar setup on my 2013 JK. My winch is mounted to a cradle, with hitches front and rear like yours. The only difference with mine is that I have the power cables permanently ran through my jeep front and back. I used 00 cable, with quick connects on the ends, and have a disconnect up at the battery. This allows me to move my winch front or back as needed, simply plug into the quick connect I have at each bumper, and pull away. I can then disconnect the quick connects at the battery when I am not wheeling, and I don't run the risk of someone messing with my battery through the outside connections.

Yep. Winch in a cradle. Quick Disconnects on front, rear, and winch. Marine battery switch at the battery so no hot wires while not in use. Works great, except remember to put the winch in before you get stuck. Lugging 150lbs is a bitch in the mud.

Did you include a quick disconnect system to attach to a buddies vehicle? I’ve had a Cummins truck drive off the side of the road. I didn’t have any traction (ice cover road) to winch him out but if I’m now doing this system so I can always throw my winch in someone else’s hitch.

cool and useful video, the home made battery auxiliary posts are awesome, your dad did a great job, about the portable winch, i had that in my WJ for years, used it with a warn front hitch receiver then i got stuck once and forgot the winch home, so i decided to put the winch into the stock front bumper hiding it and i'm glad i did it but of course it has pros and cons ... watched lots of your video, please keep doing that!

Thanks for the video. I was thinking of doing something similar as my LJ is my daily driver. Normally I'd leave the winch off (and keep it in the garage) and only install it when I'm heading out wheeling. I love the battery adapters (I'm going to make a pair) but I'm thinking of hooking up a female plug "semi-permanently" to the battery with the adapters. That way I have a quick connect/disconnect w/o opening the hood for the winch or other high draw applications like jump starting or running my 1200W inverter.

My 25 ft table has quick connects on both ends so I can either run the winch on the front or the back and the quick connect allows me to plug it in and use it at either end and never worry about whether I'm connecting it correctly because it'll only fit one way.😊

Use an ATV winch combined with a pully system. Less weight and as strong as you want. Just put an extra snatchblock or more. Electrical connector in the front and back. Also with a smaller winch the current is less. This all when time does not matter.

This is an awesome idea, if you only go 4x4ing a few times a year you won't use extra petrol driving around the place with all that extra weight, leave the winch in the shed until you actually go off road, or in my case I think I might have a designated spot for it in my camp trailer, AND I could put a hitch point on the back of the trailer to! And run the winch off the deep cycle battery in the trailer

For my battery connections I'm using fleet terminals on all my trucks. I mostly mess with old Dodges, and they tend to have 3+ wires going to the positive terminal, so I solder on copper logs. For my winch I'm going to put the cables going to my starter etc. onto the post and then put a standard nut on, then use the remainder of the post sticking up and the wing nuts that come with the fleet terminals to attach my winch cables.

You could leave you quick connect and run it outta the grill, or desreatly somewhere. Then take a set of jumper cables and chop off one end and add a quick connect. Then you can plug and go with your winch or a set of jumper cables without popping your hood. You could even add in a disconnect switch in the cab if you don't wanna worry about sending power to an unplugged connector.

I want to be able to set up winch as fast as possible to be able to render assistance. I have mine in the toolbox of my truck with a reciever welded to the box. I have cables ran to front and back ready to go with quick connects. all I have to do is shove the winch in the reciever put in the pin plug it in and I'm winching. about 45 seconds to a minute to setup

Great idea for when the times comes to need winched. Only one comment, maybe paint the winch hold down frame assembly the same color as the rollbar. It looks unpainted in this view. Back in the day, we had a portable electric from Ramsey that was a small 1,500 lbs pull and it came with a slide on bracket to the winch that slipped over a trailer hitch ball. Carried the snatch block etc. and it helped with lighter weight winching while also being light enough and small enough to carry and store. Much has changed since that time period but the issue at hand, portable winch is always something to consider vs. permanent.

I like the idea of storing your winch out of the weather but why not just leave the cables hooked to the battery with the quick disconnect? For me that would be more of a hassle than actually attaching the winch all the time. Great idea! Great Job! Thanks for your videos!I've been reading the other comments after I already posted mine but one made a point about using one winch for multiple vehicles, that is a great idea! Vehicles at the farm or in my case my brother and I could run this set up and split the cost and use one winch. Brilliant!

Hey bud why dont you weld a brace between your roll bar with a receiver so you can secure it that way then all you gotta do is pull the pin

I didn't think about that, that's a good idea, I was also thinking if the leads are long enough could you put that in you rear hitch mount and work just as good?!

those copper plates are going to heat up and create alot of resistance because they are nowhere as tight as they should be. bad idea imho.

the copper plates are barely touching the posts and dont look like they are touching the terminals at all. that looks like a shotty connection
