@@poanesbitt imagine a cone of sound coming from your drivers. You want them to overlap at your position. Some tweeters are very narrow and need to be towed in a bit to reach you. If taking measurements of the driver you would see a dip in the Db off axis left and right. Most speakers if not towed in would have a nasty dip in your higher frequencies. Just try to get your tweeters at ear level and pointed in the right direction.

All this sounds crazy. One guy on the other you tube channel says up-firing (Klipsch 40SA) sitting on the main L+R speakers are not good. He says don't waste your money. Says - Use either bookshelf on the wall directed at the seating position or in-ceiling. Now, Andrew is saying different. I am confused. Here is the thing: I live in a rental apartment. Cutting the ceiling for the speakers, running wires? My landlord will charge me a hefty fine. Upfiring on top the speaker is the way to go. I already have a 5.1 setup off of the Denon Receiver. I have two "OLD" bookshelf speakers. I can hang them things on the wall behind my TV. Will that be sufficient? Will I get the effect of atmos? All that will cost me are two iron brackets. Sure, I can put two holes to install hefty brackets. Landlord wouldn't know. Just the wires will hang from those speakers that may look ugly. So I am going to go by what Andrew says. Anyone care to comment for renters like me?

Upward firing speakers are supposed to simulate in-ceiling placement but in practice are disappointing. Lots of KZread and Reddit threads on this, as well as my own experience. @@AC_Milan1899 I have 4 Klipsch CDT-5800-C ii in-ceiling speakers. Make sure you place them at 45° from the main listening position. You can place it by calculating the distance between the ear level and the ceiling. Go forward the same distance. This is where you should place your front heights. The same should be done with the rear heights. Avoid direct down firing speakers. The Klipschs have aimable tweeters that you can aim at your main listening position.

Excellent Primer on basic 5.1.2 set up for Atmos. The setup process on the receiver is explained in detail with clear simple language. Andrew's excellent writing skills is only exceeded by his oratory prowess. My opinion is based on setting my first 5.1 surround system in 1995, and the multiple formats that have followed. Auto Calibration (Audyssey, Dirac, YPao, etc) are hit and miss on most entry and mid level receivers/processors. For novices Andrew's fantastic Primer is the way to go. In general you want all speakers set to small, even floor-standing speakers. If you set them to large a lot of receivers completely disregard your cross-over setting to your sub(s). Hence bass or sub-bass might not play at all (since few towers play down to 20-30 Hz) and even if they do, most don’t do it well or they tax your reciver a lot more than needed. Setting them to small you can experiment with a lower or higher cross-over.

@@eriklindahl7376 there is a way to get full range in large ; most of avr have some sort of a bass-boost or extra-bass(in Yamaha avr) the name sounds like avr adding additional fake bass but what it actually does is, avr let all channel play full range and also send a copy of the lower end of all the channels to the subwoofer as well, in that way subwoofer will cover for the ultra low of every channel, but this is suitable for large speaker setups….

Your videos are awesome, I've learned a lot binge watching them over the past week. My lady doesn't like you much though, I watched your video on the Jamo and thought yes. So a week ago I somehow got her on board with me getting a Jamo 5.1.2 setup ($1450) She wasn't thrilled with it though "too much $$$ it's just sound" Welp, I watched this video + some of your other reviews and knew I wouldn't be happy long term if I went all Jamo. So, watching more of your stuff + a few other YT audio fellas. I thought to myself "ohhhh, Polk Reserve looks beautiful in Walnut and gets good reviews." The problem there is, there's uhhhh... a slight bump in price, and by slight, I mean 3x. The "same" setup from Jamo S and Polk Reserve, Polk's almost 3x the price to the penny lol. Polk is great but she tells me "the TV has built in speakers" so I can't explain this to her. A week ago she thought Jamo was expensive lol. Apparently, she doesn't appreciate good audio, so she has refused my request to go buy the Reserve stuff. But she did give me a monthly budget, so I can buy a piece or 2 a month and have a home theater going by November. WOO HOO to a half-victory! Which is better than no victory at all. Also, Polk seems to have big Black Friday sales in October & November, so MAYBE since I gotta wait to save up my allowance anyways, I'll be able to get this whole setup for only 2.5x as much as the Jamo for BF. That would make her happy lol, yeah right... Your videos helped me realize I should go Reserve, and when she finally hears 7.2.2 in all its glory she'll understand and she'll love it. At least that's how it works in my wild imagination. Thank you sir.

I would love a review of an atmos system vs a Dolby true hd system with better amplification and speakers. Atmos is an absolute must for actual movie theaters but I’m not sold that it’s better in home theater situations except helicopter movies where all the sound comes for some tinny speakers overhead like Mission Helicopter 10 and Heli Man, The Atmos Avenger! But I could be wrong:)

I stumbled across your year old video where you talked about leaving an audiophile magazine and learned about the benefits of soundbars. I went through a similar experience and posted this as my response as I was again caught up in Black Friday. While I didn't work for an audiophile magazine I had followed their advice to build a 7.1 entertainment room. I had become burned out with the complexity and dealing with a separate remote. No learning remote could do everything I needed. I tried a soundbar out 10 years ago with a subwoofer and it was close enough if not exceeding my AVR system that I gave away my expensive system and kept the soundbar. I've started to look at newer Atmos systems but there isn't much Atmos content yet and what there is still sounds fine on my older Soundbar. I don't watch movies as much as I used to so it's less of a priority. My goal was to upgrade my bedroom 10 year old Panasonic 55" plasma TV and Vizio soundbar to a LG C1 77" with a LG Atmos soundbar though Sony was tempting me with the HT-9. With everything in my shopping cart I backed away and reconsidered whether it was worth the cost. After all my plasma TV has deep blacks, my soundbar has very clear voice audio and excellent surround so why replace it. Don't get caught up in the latest hype and sales frenzy. Consider what you are trying to accomplish and whether it is worth the expense. I could easily afford a new system, but why! I'm going to spend the holiday watching movies and playing games rather than figuring out how I am going to fit this new equipment and get rid of the old.

Hmm, I'm curious in what you've said about the height speakers sitting on your fronts. I had this set up for a couple of months and really couldn't get the sound I wanted, as the sound was diffused (my walls are roughly 8ft). I decided to mount the heights to the wall and it was a night and day experience, where you can hear the sound from what the sound engineer set those scenes for. So I'm wondering why you didn't mention wall mounting the speakers you have or didn't mention that you could, seeing that your room seems almost identical to mine?

It helps the experience a little bit but not sure if it's worth the money. Granted...my configuration is not a high end $$$ system so that may be the problem. But I hated to spend a lot not knowing if it would truly work well. So....based on my experience I'm neutral on atmos. Overall I'm pleased with my sound as the Polk speakers do a good job.

Worth mentioning that you can use something like the SVS Prime Elevation speaker instead of in-ceiling or bounce speakers. I live in an apartment and didn't want to wall mount so I just put speaker stands on top of my TV stand. Not the prettiest solution but the sound is incredible (arguably better than in-ceiling as those often sacrifice sound for form factor).

I have the Klipsch CDT-5800-C ii height speakers which can be angled towards the main listening position. I looked at the Dolby speakers placement manual (which is great) and I based my placement decisions on it. It didnt specify any angles. I just placed the rear heights 1m (3ft) behind the main seating position angling the woofer to what felt to be the right angle. I then placed the front heights about 3m (9ft) away from the rear heights and did the same with the angle. I didnt use any geometry in my calculations and it turned out to be great 😅
