I have this scope and it is a great scope for the hobbyist and affordable. One thing I did with mine was to hook it to my ham radio antenna, after discharging the antenna, and I could see all the noise I have been plagued with. Wife turned something on and I could see the noise it caused. It was a LED light bulb. Bit of a learning curve for someone new to scopes but there is lots of help like your channel. Thanks and keep em coming! Carl AB1ZI

2:30 It's not a 1M resistor in the probe tip, but a 9M resistor (on a 10:1 probe setting) , and this 9M resistor is bypassed by switching to the 1:1 setting on the probe. The internal resistance of the scope is usally 1M on the modern scopes.

Before self cal I recommend to turn it on for 45 minutes to get into a regular running temperature. Don't forget that the self needs to be done with the proper probe divider e.g. 1:1 or 10:1 depending what you use.

I think that when you do a self calibration there shouldn't be any probes or anything connected to the scope. It says it at the start to disconnect everything from all inputs on the scope. Or am I missing something here?

I just tried the hack page on my 2102A. Unfortunately, this model does not want to be hacked so easily. It might be newer hardware or something. I found a page where someone found a way; still have to try it. So, it seems that the best bang for the buck is the 1054, which is easy to hack.

When I plug in the USB stick, it says "no USB" when I hit the update button even though the sticks lights flash. I think this scope is going back. If so, I will get an Instek MDO. Thanks for the videos. I enjoy watching.

Your needs will dictate if a scope would be useful for you or not. For basic troubleshooting, like verifying continuity, voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, DMMs will do the job just fine. When dealing with electronic circuits, you may need to validate the signal shape, evaluate timings, decode buses, etc. Under these circumstances, a scope is a very valuable tool. Globally, It's a matter of need, no more, no less.

Well, if you can't figure out what to use it for then there's 2 alternatives: 1. You actually don't need a scope. 2. You need to start fixing more advanced stuff so you will need a scope.

If you like to fix things a scope and a few basic tricks give you a huge wealth of debugging information which helps immensely understanding what happens in the circuit. Often it's really easy stuff too like ripple on a power rail or a bad clock signal etc. It's really not difficult if you just shed your prejudice.

Brian If you want to do anything more than basic voltage, amp and resistance checks you will need a scope. I rebuild old tube guitar amps and audio gear. Scope is essential in checking output signal for unwanted distortion and bias issues and trouble shooting issues in a circuit. Unless you are a person with amazing instincts of typical electronics issues like Sorin on Electronics Repair School channel, guy can repair anything with a DMM, power supply and a can of Zippo lighter fluid. He learned in communist Romania so he made do with whatever he had on hand. Most people are not that instinctively blessed. Plus he did it that way for 35 years so experience is the best tool in his arsenal.
