How to set the timing on a Polaris Sportsman/Magnum - *See description for parts and tools*

How to set the timing on a older Magnum or Sportsman.
If you are doing a full tear down on the engine you need to make sure the timing is set on the crank before you can set it at the top cam sprocket.
You will need a top dead center tool if you don’t have one or don’t know how to set a engine at TDC. You will need 2 quarts of OW-20 oil, and a gallon of coolant.
To pull the flywheel off, you either need a flywheel puller that screws into the center of the flywheel or a puller with 3 slots that you thread bolts through into the threaded holes in the flywheel. Do not use a 3 jaw puller. You will break the flywheel or mess up the end of the crank. Spend the $20 on the correct puller to save having to buy a new flywheel or a new crank.
Another good tool to have is a impact screwdriver. The bolts that hold the lower timing cover with the crank seal are sometimes a pain to get out. A cheap one will do the trick and save you from drilling screws out.
*DO NOT USE AFTERMARKET HEAD GASKET. USE A OEM POLARIS HEAD GASEKT*

Once the motor turns over will the different colored links still match up with the dots on the sprockets ?

They won’t. The sprockets are different sizes. The only time you want them lined up are when you’re setting the timing off the crank.
