Thank you for this. Bought 10 year old Jazz that had a very fast idle speed. Think the dealer had either removed the battery or allowed it to fully drain. When re-connected/charged the car did not have chance to reset the correct idle speed. My wife spent most of the time with her foot on the brakes as the car was constantly pulling away. Racing engine producing far too much noise. I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes, reconnected and made sure everything was turned off. Re-started and the idle speed was about 1500+rpm. Held the rpm at 3000 for about 4 minutes until i was sure the fan was cutting in. Then allowed the engine to idle and it dropped to about 700rpm. Left it idling for 10minutes. Turned off the ignition and then re-started. Idle was about 1000rpm and quickly dropped back to about 700rpm. Wife now totally happy as this makes the car much easier to handle. Thank you so much, this had made such a great difference. Perfect !!!

Thank you for your video. My 2011 Honda Accord ex-l 2.4l now running like a champ. Your video is very detailed. A small tip from me: I used a stick to push down the gas pedal and let it leans against the seat at position of 3k Rev and then just walk away to work on my garden for about 10 minutes then come back to check the radiator fan (hood is open). Guess I don't have enough patience. Anyway very appreciate your video.

Thanks! My 1996 Honda Civic makes no mention of any idle learn procedure but I suspect that something similar applies even though they don't bother to inform us in the manual! They do make mention of using the "Honda PGM Tester" as preferred method of setting idle speed vs. using the idle speed screw on the throttle body so I guess we have to assume that they are saying that you can either make direct adjustment with that tool or you can simply see if the idle learn cycle has completed. Mysterious.

  • @kelvinsgarage

not 100% sure but i think it’s (1) to warm it up to operating temps but also (2) to give it a reference point for the ecu to ‘know’ it’s at 3000 rpm. i think it’s necessary to to get it to 3000 rpm for it to work properly

Not necessary at all. In fact... You're better off letting the ECU learn your driving habits and climate on its own. The only reason there is even a generic reset to begin with... Is to keep customers that do understand how the the ECU works from coming back to the shop unnecessarily. Just drive like you would normally and the ECU will conform to your driving style and atmosphere. Remember guys... Inline 4 cylinders run a little rough by default. Don't over think it.
