Hello and welcome to another episode of Kelvin's Garage! Did you recently clean your throttle body only to find that the idle speed is MUCH HIGHER or acting funny? In this episode, we show you how to set the engine idle speed by performing the official Honda Idle Learn Procedure! Once you re-train the engine computer, the idle speed will sit exactly where it needs to be!

Thank you for this. Bought 10 year old Jazz that had a very fast idle speed. Think the dealer had either removed the battery or allowed it to fully drain. When re-connected/charged the car did not have chance to reset the correct idle speed. My wife spent most of the time with her foot on the brakes as the car was constantly pulling away. Racing engine producing far too much noise. I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes, reconnected and made sure everything was turned off. Re-started and the idle speed was about 1500+rpm. Held the rpm at 3000 for about 4 minutes until i was sure the fan was cutting in. Then allowed the engine to idle and it dropped to about 700rpm. Left it idling for 10minutes. Turned off the ignition and then re-started. Idle was about 1000rpm and quickly dropped back to about 700rpm. Wife now totally happy as this makes the car much easier to handle. Thank you so much, this had made such a great difference. Perfect !!!
It's not a click bait Highly recommend I have recently cleaned the throttle body on my 8th generation honda accord 2.4 MT, the idle was at 1.5 rpm before reset and I have tried your procedure it works as oe reset and it now idle at 0.7k rpm. Thank you very much.
Cleaned the throttle body, rpm/idle starts surging, saw this video and followed the procedures, rpm/idle went back to normal, thank you! Honda civic 1.8 2012

Thank you for your video. My 2011 Honda Accord ex-l 2.4l now running like a champ. Your video is very detailed. A small tip from me: I used a stick to push down the gas pedal and let it leans against the seat at position of 3k Rev and then just walk away to work on my garden for about 10 minutes then come back to check the radiator fan (hood is open). Guess I don't have enough patience. Anyway very appreciate your video.
Thank you so much,my car back to normal back after cleaning throttle body❤thank you so much
Thank you so much.... this help me so much to fix the RPM, after cleaning throttle body the the RPM were over 15, now is smooth and below 10.
Very helpful, I did the same to have my vehicle's engine RPM back to its normal range
You, sir, are a scholar and a gentleman. This fixed my car. All this time I thought it was because my car was getting old. I lost faith in my car and only used it to drive short distances. Now full confidence is restored.
Thank you. The small details really helped
Good video & instruction procedure my friend. Well done!
Spot on. Worked for me Honda Accord euro 2009 2.0 R20A3
Thanks! My 1996 Honda Civic makes no mention of any idle learn procedure but I suspect that something similar applies even though they don't bother to inform us in the manual! They do make mention of using the "Honda PGM Tester" as preferred method of setting idle speed vs. using the idle speed screw on the throttle body so I guess we have to assume that they are saying that you can either make direct adjustment with that tool or you can simply see if the idle learn cycle has completed. Mysterious.
quick tip, when you disconnect the batter turn the headlights to the on position do that it full drains all electricity. (thanks scotty Kilmer=) )

Also we just put in a Walker Cat. My back bumper is still sooty after now 10 days or so of installing the new Cat. My car has over 500k but the compression was about 154 for all cylinders. Do you think I am burning oil and is this an issue?

Hi, I tried twice this morning but it did not work at my wife's 2018 Honda HRV. Will we see the RPM to come down immediately after the procedure or should we let the car to learn the driving habit for some time for the better results? The RPM still stays at 1200-1500 after the procedure and causing higher fuel consumption and not smooth driving experience.

Hey buddy I have a question. What is the reason for keeping the car at 3000 rpm? Is it just to warm it up faster for the fans to go off? Or is there another reason. Can I just let it run till warms up without keeping it to 3000 rpm? Thank you
@kelvinsgarage
7 ай бұрын
not 100% sure but i think it’s (1) to warm it up to operating temps but also (2) to give it a reference point for the ecu to ‘know’ it’s at 3000 rpm. i think it’s necessary to to get it to 3000 rpm for it to work properly

Just following up… I was able to borrow an expensive diagnostic tool (Autel MX808 MaxiCheck) from a friend. I ran a TPS reset and then I did this relearn procedure. It worked perfectly! I am now around 700 RPM at idle. I tried the relearn procedure at least 7 times before, but it only worked after I ran the TPS reset on the diagnostics tool. (I used the Autel MX808 MaxiCheck All System & Service Diagnostic Tablet, USA Version from JB Tools.)

When you disconnect both cables on battery, you can touch cables together and that discharges capacitors in the computers to lose all memory. Much quicker process. A little spark is normal but not common.

Not necessary at all. In fact... You're better off letting the ECU learn your driving habits and climate on its own. The only reason there is even a generic reset to begin with... Is to keep customers that do understand how the the ECU works from coming back to the shop unnecessarily. Just drive like you would normally and the ECU will conform to your driving style and atmosphere. Remember guys... Inline 4 cylinders run a little rough by default. Don't over think it.
