I just had this idle surge after replacing a bunch of original parts (breather chamber, PCV, IAC valve, intake and TB gaskets, coolant transfer tube o-rings, injector seals, knock sensor, etc.) on my 98 Civic's Y5 engine (CVT). Here's a few things I learned. Maybe it'll help someone else with their situation. Used the Lisle spill-free funnel kit to make sure I bled all air out of my coolant system. In doing the above work, I had to do a complete drain of the system (including pulling the block drain plug), so the entire cooling system (block, head, all heater plumbing, etc.) was essentially full of air when the time came to refill with coolant. Once I refilled the system, it took over an hour of idling and multiple fan cycles for the system to completely burp all the air pockets. During this process, occasionally rocking the car up and down helped dislodge bubbles, as well. I also serviced the throttle body for the first time in 22 years. The engine side of the throttle plate, and all internal passages, were filthy. I cleaned the throttle blade and bore w/red Scotchbrite and solvent until new again, taking care to remove only the crud, and no aluminum with it. So at this point, minus the crud buildup, the TB is back to bypassing proper airflow around the throttle plate. This bump in airflow also confused the computer at initial startup. Idle bypass air screw adjustment: was originally sitting at about 1 full turn out from seated. After TB cleaning, 1/4 turn out from seated was all that was needed to put bypass airflow back to where the computer wanted it. IOW, after cleaning the throttle body, the engine didn't require as much additional bypass air from this part of the system. Beyond the above, I pulled both leads off the battery, clamped them together for an hour, then reconnected them to battery. I read this somewhere online - one of the many different "procedures" people use in an attempt to reset the computer. Then turn ignition key to run position for a couple seconds. Then I started the car and left it alone for a full hour to relearn idle. Was interesting to watch the tach, and how the computer kept adjusting RPM to sort itself out. After that hour, the idle still surged very slightly, but after a couple of additional drive cycles, it's idling rock steady and the car runs like the day I drove it off the dealer's lot.

If your car has been sitting for a long time and the idle fluctuates up and down in rhythm try putting a long screwdriver or a pipe onto the idle air control valve and tap it with a hammer while the engine is running to unstick it. This worked for me on my Honda 2.4 l

I want to thank you very much for a very thorough explanation of idle issues on Hondas. I I happen to have a 98 Civic EX that's been giving me problems. I just rebuilt the transmission, and replaced the engine solenoid Andy Transmission solenoid. But the engine still tumbles a little bit and so I'm not completely happy. I replace the motor mounts as well. Still I'm hoping to get better gas mileage out of it. I was averaging 14-15 miles per gallons. It used to average 24 miles per gallon (32 hwy).

My idle was doing that bouncy stuff and when i was shifting it was pulling me and choking the engine and i have replaced all the sensors on the throttle body and the iacv but bothing, and then i decided to try out to spray carbon cleaner on the manifold gasket and there was a leak, i was seeing bubbles so i am going to replace it and see if that fixes my issue, hope for the best 🤞🏻

great vid!. i appreciate this because i’m new to my car but every thing seems manageable. 2 years ago i was taught how to changed my IAC and recently for the second time because of the revving and jumping/skipping in park or at a light. i thought it was my engine gasket leak but that was fixed. thought it was my spark plugs- changed those. yesterday i cleaned the throttle body but while attached, changed my air filter & tube, and unplugged my battery to reset BUT i think it’s time to take off the TB, change coolant, and adjust the idle bypass screw 😢😅. i’m determined now. ty for the tips. side tip: i’ve been reading my car workshop manual (honda crv 2001 ex) it definitely helps with diagnosing the code properly P0505

I have just wiped and cleaned a throttle body on my Accord 2.4 2011 now I have idle issues - the lowest rpm I get while idling is 840 and it is constantly fluctuating between 840 and 1,100 rpms. I just wonder what could possible go wrong that makes now revs go up and down keeping the lower value pretty high at 840? The reason I went and cleaned the throttle body is that my air intake tube cracked and I had to install a new one and cleaned mass air flow sensor as well.

Things Ive worked on and still havent resolved my issue is spark plugs, TPS, IAC valve, replaced the TB gasket (i replaced it wrong so theres a vacuum leak at the gasket), cleaned the TB plate, EGR valve and port cleaning. gonna try and clean the fuel injectors and i have o-rings for the FIT valve coming in half a day so ill be able to do that also. Wish me luck cause I bought the car with a idle problem :D

I'm pretty sure it's my manifold gasket but I'm having problems getting it out. I want to make sure that's the problem before I get too deep into it. That clamp that holds it onto the engine is a pain in the butt. Those bolts tend to wear down, and rest, and you will need a standard set to find that sweet spot where it fits the Bolt 9/32 or whatever it is. I have three bolts broken off at the manifold, fortunately there's enough to grip onto to get them out of the engine. I just don't want to get too far and not be able to fix the problem or find out it was something else. My car's been sitting for 2 years, every time I fix something something else would be the problem as usual

Gonna do this tomorrow it's very likely a coolant level issue. I'm getting the 900-1600 rpm revs. While testing looking it over earlier I noticed the coolant was below the min. Also when I turn on the AC the idle revs up to 2000 and stays there but doesn't surge.

Does does the the IAC valve run off coolant. I know it is there to heat the throttle so it does not freeze up. but is that valve not controlled by a servo motor, or is it some sort of hydraulic thing? It does sound like the fast Idle is controlled fully by coolant.. Reason why I am asking is I get white smoke only when idling with no check engine lights and valve lashes adjusted. Looked it up and a forum mentioned: "Default Re: 2000 Honda CRV smoking at idle whtie smoke at idle and just after pulling away from idle, exactly what i had when my Idle air contrl valve gasket had gone hard and failed! This gasket is repsonsible 2 things, the IAC valve, but also the seal between the housing, for letting coolant into the throttle body walls to assist with warm up, and if it fails like mine did, ityou end up with a coolant channel exposed to the sucton side of the throttle plate, and therfore, high suction (low manifold pressure at idle) causes it to suck hard and pull coolant into the intake. Another stupid design!" So I was temporarily going to bypass the water hoses to the IAC valve to see if the smoke goes away. Yes I am expecting a bad idle but without white smoke. If it goes away I will know it is the IACV gasket.

My 97 accord is idling really low and rough when turning on ac/headlights, basically any electric accessory.. today I cleaned out the egr and egr passage, most of them were clogged. And the passage was very clogged. Haven’t turned the car on yet but yeah… Does anyone know when setting up a throttle body don’t you drive air bypass screw all the way down, unplug IAC valve, and then adjust the BASS (base idle set screw) to 750, then adjust the bypass screw until idle is 750-800. Is this the correct procedure? And is base idle really 750?

1994 Manual Civic Ex, it idles at a normal 700-800 rpms but when I press the gas it isn’t immediately responsible, rpms go up after about a second and after letting go of gas the rpms drop below 500, almost as if it was going to stall.

My 91 crx looses power after it’s warmed up, kinda like it’s loosing compression, but wouldn’t it not have compression from the start? It sounds like it idles fine but it starts dying around the block, do you have any ideas?

Anyone's thoughts on puttering at idle. Sounding like it going to stall but does not. 1.8L civic.

I had a Chinese aluminum 3 core radiator that was on my dc4 integra installed from the previous owner and had a small leak not enough to be noticeable because the sits it is my toy not a daily driven one day it started idle surging thought what most though iacv so I cleaned it nothing then changed it nothing luckily I had do a Very hard U-turn because a semi was coming at me and the radiator popped on me. I put the new radiator on still have the surging switch back to the OE valve but cleaned it with carburetor cleaner and old toothbrush If you don’t use a toothbrush, basically doesn’t do anything at least on my car I also cleaned where it connects to the Intake manifold, the one closer, the hole closer to the driver side on the top is the one that was really dirty. If you don’t clean it with a toothbrush, you’ll never know and it’s hard to see unless you have a mirror or you take the intake manifold off, which is ridiculous if that’s what it is so it’s all I gotta say.

Hey thanks for the video! Really narrowed down my problem, though I have a 2000 accord and I'm having the same issue, only idles in park though. Is that the same thing going on here? Anyone with any answer please lmk

Yes, our 2000 Civic surges when in park, put it in gear and it stops until the rpms get low or near idle.

I have a vacuum leak I couldn't find. The idol was bouncing up and down, it was a rubber seal in between the brake master cylinder and the brake vacuum booster. When I press my brakes hard it idles fine, and when I take my foot off it bounces.
