a really awesome strategy to try when you struggle with people pleasing is saying “I can’t do that, but what I CAN do is___” !!!

The last one is dangerouse because when you say "i will help when my workload is lighter". A clever boss will lighten your load for a bit to let you take on the extra work but then suddenly workload of normal work will come back. And then when you start setting boundaries, they will try to guilt trip you.

Hi boss, due to my increase in workload, I will be unable to continue handling these additional duties because I will be prioritising my primary duties first. (at least that is how I would say no)😅

I have these issues too but the advice in the video about politics is easily adapted to everything else. "I'm sorry but I don't bitch about coworkers during company time. I'm happy to do it over drinks Friday evening if you're free".

Speaking from experience, YES TO NOT TAKING ON EXTRA ROLES!!! I did this in my previous job, and was WRITTEN UP when I made a mistake. It took me threatening to quit for them to hire someone else. Because I didn't learn the darn lesson the first time. I was asked again to cover a scheduling role as well as my on call bi-weekly duty. Resulting in working 24-7 but they did not have to pay me for 24-7 since the "on call" is considered flat rate. When I made a mistake there I was denied a promotion. So, again, YES YES YES!! Do NOT take on extra duties because a co worker leaves.

I conveniently don't answer my phone if I'm not at work. I'm not as good at setting boundaries otherwise. Though I may have to soon. My coworkers keep dumping their work on me and it's getting to be too frequent.

Lol I'm just unapologetic when setting boundaries, and that absolutely has gotten me in trouble Example from my project engineering position: "Hey, crawl under that floorboard and check the wiring." "Oh hahaha, that's a good one 👍 " "What are you afraid of a couple of spiders??" "Oh, you're serious?? I will absolutely not be doing that. Not only is that completely unnecessary for this project. That's outside of my job description. " "You're still young and gonna be paying dues for a while. That attitude is going to get you nowhere. " Yeahh.. I don't work there anymore ..

I was sort of being trained to potentially be a lead in my department a couple years ago and was set in charge but also set to be one of the three people working the back room and taking orders out to customers - which got busy. I was delegating tasks as needed but something was going screwey with our machines we use so when the people would pick their task it would say it was taken already so they would take another one and then the original task would return. I thought maybe it was my machine so when I went to the restroom I went to get a new machine hoping it would clear the glitch. Our manager stopped me to tell me to do what I already was doing (and not being paid for it) and I was trying to explain what the issue I was having was (and how I was attempting to resolve it) when they kept talking over me. I then was trying to explain that I can't do two things at once - I cannot be *outside* taking an order to customers and tell the next person what task to pick at the same time when the manager said "well *I* can do it" at that point I decided no more and stopped taking on the more supervisor-y tasks.

Or we could all just put our big boy pants on and learn how to have civil conversations without acting like toddlers because somebody doesn't agree with us. That being said, one should never ask somebody's opinion on something if you can't handle what could potentially come out of their mouth.

@@ebrakefml In my experience, being in the minority tends to paint a target on one's back. When someone views a person of the opposite opinion as the enemy, it becomes easier to find fault with anything and everything they do. It keeps things a lot simpler if politics are left out of professional situations, as they should.

This works great if you have a healthy mindset to create boundaries. What about coworkers who fail their job responsibilities and others pick up the slack? It’s called insubordination. Her “boundaries” are negatively impacting the team. She gossips 1/2 the day and claims she is too busy to take on other assignments. Everyone else works overtime & she leaves exactly at 5 everyday. We all have lives, not just her. Not a team player. I’ll be promoted to manager and plan to have a transparent discussion on expectations for the entire team.

I don’t completely understand what the comment is trying to say so correct me if I’m wrong, but if someone applied for certain things and you want them to work extra on something else without getting paid then they have the right to leave. Why should one work overtime because others can’t set boundaries?

@@chocolateredvelvet yeah, the comment above is talking about a management/ leadership issue but put the blame on the employee that keep their boundaries and keeping their good life/work balance in check.
