How to service or replace Caravan Wheel Bearings

** Special Addition **
Here is the video of Jason from West Coast Trailer and Caravan Services servicing our van after 20,000 kms when we were in Perth.
He changes wheel bearings and checks brakes.
Some great tips and tricks on how to do it, and why its done. Also some tell tale signs you need it checked.
Enjoy and thanks for watching.

This is the most practical and easy to follow lesson I have seen. Well done. I am doing mine as per Tony's instructions!

Be sure not to mix bearings up like in this video , the bearings have ran in with their cups and placing bearings in different cups will speed up the wear

Very good info well done its the best guide on the internet and his comments on rocker roller suspension is so true can't stand independent suspension after owning two vans with it adds a lots of weight aswell.

Always interesting when videos regarding mechanical repairs get posted. Most of us mechanics have differing work practices. There were a couple of things I am sure others would have done differently in this video. Was a jack stand even used to back up that bottle jack? Don’t reuse hub seals or split pins unless it is absolutely necessary. Don’t paint the face of the hub surface, paint can contribute to wheel nuts working loose. That centre rocker bush on the LH side looks like it wasn’t taking grease properly. Just my thoughts, thanks for the Vid. Keep enjoying your trip👍

Thanks for your comments, yes everyone does do it all a bit differently I am sure. As long as people are servicing and checking these things, just wanted to bring awareness that vans also need looking after 😄

I wonder why it was okay to damage the guy's dust caps, too.

It still surprises me that people who should know better, will rely on a single hydraulic jack to support a van/vehicle when doing this type of work. An accident waiting to happen.

You can see its on its support stands.

@@Cusk0 Where? Tell me where in the video you can see it being held by support stands. If you are talking about the vans own support stands, which also are not being used, they are designed to 'stabilise' the van .. NOT support it. The ONLY support I can see is the hydraulic jack!!

How much grease was added to the hubs other than the bearings?

  • @jaimo929

Very dangerous practice relying on the jack , at the very least you can put the caravan stabilisers down to assist in support and throw the tyre under the axle . But if at home or your getting someone out to do it there is no excuse not to use proper axle stands . People have died from relying on jacks.

a jack, but no jack stands. leg under the caravan, again no stands. a rag to wipe the grease away, but it's been laying in the dirt. van not hooked up to the car. no chocks under the opposite wheels. no need to go any further than that. the video should be headed "what not to do".
