How to service Novatec freehub, DB Release 4C and others

Спорт

Serviced the freehub on my Diamondback Release 4C. It is a Novatec hub, comment below if you know the model number. The cone wrench is 17 mm. Other MTB's use this same hub and they tend to have problems with the freehub. Regular maintenance will keep it running well for the most part. My clunking noise went away after cleaning and greasing the freehub mechanism.

    FYI Novatec recommends using Dumonde Freehub oil, not grease. Also you should put loctite on the end cap threads before reassembling, again per Novatec, to keep the loosening issue you recommended.

    Thanks for the tips.I pinned your comment so others can see it right away. In my case no more problems after this was done. I now have Bontrager wheels on the bike for the past 3 months or so.

    After couple hours of searching on youtube this is the only video that is clear, not overly edited-where certain steps are left out making you wonder how they got to where they are now.. No sponsors further lengthening the footage. Good old 'how to' video. Thank you

    Had this exact problem on my Diamondback Atroz, all I heard was something like a loose bolt in rear of bike and had no idea what it was until I finally had the shop take care of it for me.

    Not sure what's up with mine but the big rubber washer just sits there...theres nothing for it to slot into so when I put the casette back on the lock nut doesn't reach the freehub threads....it only fits if I remove the rubber washer 🤷

    I got some Hunt wheels and I think they use this hub. If not I net they are very similar. I have a question. When do we know we have to replace the bearings? Thanks for this video.

    I am serving my release 3 hub. I noticed one of the 4 pawls do not spring back up. It isn’t stuck down it just lays there. The others spring back up when pushed down. Is that normal?

    It might just be sticky grease. Also make sure the spring is not missing. They should all spring back up

    I had my 2020 DB Catch 2 freehub off yesterday to clean and grease. I didn’t notice the “spacer” that sits between the freehub and wheel bearing during disassembly, but I found it on the bench. I installed it and everything went back together and all seems fine. Your video is the only reference I have been able to find that shows the spacer. I have some questions as to weather the spacer actually came out of the assembly or if it was junk that I had on the bench. Anyhow, do you know if the spacer is on all the Catch and Release bikes? And if I did not install it what would happen; will the pawls sit too low in the wheel? Thanks for any info. -Rob

    I am having nothing but trouble with my Novatec hub. After 2 rides i get so many dirt and water inside that my freehub is stuck. Could it be the seal?

    I think it would be too thin and not last long. A light grease would be better.

  • @TonyHob

    @TonyHob

    It needs to be really thin viscosity grease or high viscosity oil. Not sure how thick the grease you have is. They do sell lube specifically for freehubs which would be ideal but it’s pricey

    This is one of the best videos I’ve seen, great explanations not just “watch me do this”. The “ums” are NOT an issue, kudos to you for the quality of the video especially considering not your first language. Thanks Brother!! (Is that spline grease you showed the Motorcraft PTFE lube?)
