How to Service Marx trains

Ғылым және технология

Here is a little video I am making for a youtuber on how to service Marx trains. In this video, I explain how to care for your adorable little Marx trains so that they will run like new for many years to come. If you have a more advanced problem with your trains, leave a comment and I will tell you how to fix it. Parts are still made and are easy to find if you need some. I hope this video helps you and I hope you have fun with your trains!

I just dug out my few Marx engines for the first time in several years, and they weren't showing many signs of life... so I did everything in this video on them and they're running great! (Or at least as well as they can on the rusty old tracks I use.) Huge thanks! One of them is my dad's old Marx 666 he got from a friend when he was a kid (and apparently never used) so he'd probably like to see it up and running the way it is (also puffing smoke like it's supposed to).

I bought a Marx 666 Train Set on EBAY to replace a set I had as a boy. Looked very good with minimal wear, but it would sometimes stop and was slow and jerky. Also the wheels sparked on the track quite a bit. Some of the tracks had some minor rust and the connector pins had some corrosion. I cleaned up the tracks and connector pins with aluminum foil and followed the instructions provided in your video. Was easy and worked like a champ. Can't take the corners at full speed any more. Thank you very much!

@@patrickfrawley8705 Hi Patrick, I get mineral spirits from the hardware store in the paint section. I've heard it's not good to use WD40 on the locomotives due to it being simply a solvent and not having much lubricating properties? I still use WD40 to initially loosen up some sticky motors and it seem to help. After I wipe most of the WD40 and lubricate the wheels with light machine oil and the gears with whatever grease I have on hand. I think the key is to use very little of everything because a little goes a long way on these little motors.

Good film. This was a special Marx loco called The Jubilee. It was different from most Marx CP locos because of the front of boiler marker lights, 391 cab number, side cooling tubes, raised hand rail which does not loop under the front of the boiler, small raised stack, bell, and cross-heads. When they are not all scratched, they are quite beautiful

Yeah. It is a beauty! I love my CPs and Jubilees because they are the most like my favorite loco, the Canadian Pacific F1a Jubilee type. I am still wondering about that motor though. It is postwar with prewar wheels! I wonder if it is very rare or something...

You only have to remove two screws to swap out a motor. I imagine that there are many Marx locos out their with incorrect motors, however they run just fine. Only us operators and collectors notice the difference.

  • @daylightbigboy

Lance Boil I think the motor might be rare. My theory is that Marx had a bunch of prewar wheels that they made before the war left over and they put it on a new motor. I actually got a steam loco Marx motor that someone converted it so it would fit in a diesel. I put it onto a M10000 shell and it works very well!

I use strike hold weapons, auto, marine and communications cleaner. Contains tetrachloroethylene, use in ventilated area. Gun oil for bearings and other parts, white lithium grease for gears or vaseline. You can use gun grease as well since it will not gum up the works. When you finish cleaning your locomotive you can then lube your favorite firearm. I also use auto shop towels and and compressed air, the canned type dusters work very well.

Hi. Great video. Interestingly my motor spins great (I can see it spinning super fast inside), but very little torque is being transferred to the main drive shaft. If I lift the train off the track and run it manually with wires the wheels spin fast, but if I put the train on the track, there isn't enough torque to make the train move. After taking it apart, i see the drive shaft spins freely within the commutator. I'm guessing it should be rigidly attached to the commutator. Any ideas?

You're welcome! The smoke unit is a bit tricky to repair. The unit could be dry and just needs some more fluid. If the unit is truly burnt out, there is someone who makes replacement elements for the smoke unit. It is a bit difficult to get to them. Those smoke units are held together with peened over posts that are on one half of the unit. The other half has holes that the pins fit through and are peened over. To open the unit, you have to unpeen the pins. You have to be careful as you don't want these to break off. When you put the unit back together, it is a good idea to use some headgasket sealant to avoid leakage. I hope this helps!

What does it mean when your wheels turn freely when yo take it out of the box but then get real tight and the train stops turning a few minutes later as it begins to heat up. When hot the wheels are hard to turn.

Sounds like the tender truck frames are bent inwards to the point where they are touching the wheels and keeping them from rolling. Simply bend the frames outward a little bit so that there is enough clearance between the truck frames and the wheels. A drop of oil could also do some good. Hope this helps!

DerpyRambo Oh, I see the issue now. I saw the video and your problem is an incredibly simple fix. Simply bend the tender's connection to the loco slightly down. The tender connection is too high and when you put the loco on it, it lifts the loco and driving wheels off the track preventing traction.

Instead of a tooth pick to lift up the brush spings, it is much easier to use a paper clip with a small bend in it to reach in and lift the spring up..Marty

The process is very similar except you have to do some work on the reverse unit in Lionel trains. Most of the time, all you have to do is spray some contact cleaning spray into it but sometimes you have to pull apart the e-unit and bend the fingers back into place so that they can read the drum. If the e-unit works perfectly when you get it, I would suggest not messing with it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

***** Did you have to rewind the coil? Or just redo all the wiring to the motor? I got a 2338 that had the horn relay removed and the wires that were soldered there were twisted together with twist cones. In addition, all the wires to the motor were cut. Took a bit but it's all back together. I've heard old standard gauge manual reverse have some pretty complicated wiring.

Yes, for some reason all the hardware stores I visit carry "paint thinner" but nothing labeled as "mineral spirits"; this makes it difficult, because I have to carefully read the fine print on the "paint thinner" cans to see if it is mineral spirits paint thinner or some other kind of paint thinner. Make sure you don't go in looking for what you wrote, "mineral OIL", which is a laxative for people to drink and is sold in drug stores...NOT the same thing as mineral SPIRITS. But really, lots of things are OK to use when cleaning the parts shown in this video; I just use isopropyl alcohol when I clean mine, works just fine. You might want to avoid acetone for this, but something like MEK might also be OK, but it is more hazardous to the person using it. Mineral spirits or alcohol are pretty safe.

@@HARRYRABBITvmkname , I inherited a Marx set from 1938 or 1939, which included a model 391 loco like the one in this video. My father had lubed it using Vaseline, and it really messed it up. It melts at too low a temperature and runs all over once the motor warms up, leaving the important points unlubricated. Luckily I was able to take the motor apart and carefully clean the remaining Vaseline and re-lube with modern silicone oil and grease. Now it runs like a top and the lube stays where it is supposed to be.

cmullins463 As I remember correctly, those have the non-separable motors. The way to clean it is get some mineral spirits on a Q tip and clean the commutator through the hole in the side of the motor. Clean the brushes and lubricate the unit the same way as shown in this video.

Streamlined Steamroller first these trains are classic and some antique.when they painted these they used thin coats with a varnish( clear coat)and paint thinner can eat though that paint and varnish very quickly Ps the whole train is sensitive at its age and I keep my locomotives as clean as possible and safe from more paint loss than they have already had

  • @daylightbigboy

1960 Nash Metropolitan First off, I don't get paint thinner on the shell so there isn't any danger. Note how I removed and set aside the shell when I started. Even so, if you get a drop on paint, just wipe it off immediately and no damage is done. As far as the motor, the sides aren't painted, rather they are chemically blackend so there isn't any chance for paint loss. I've worked on dozens of these things, never have I once experienced paint loss through my methods. These things were built for kids back in the day, they have pretty good paint so when the kid throws them, they don't chip. These things don't get anymore sensitive as they age, it's all metal. Steel, brass, and copper don't get brittle with only 60 or 70 years, it takes a long long time to break them down. The only thing that can get brittle is the old prewar zinc cast wheels. Sometimes they get zinc rot and crumble but most Marx prewar wheels are ok. Even all the plastic or bakelight pieces inside the reverse unit hold up. I understand your concern for something as old as this but let me assure you, these things are built well. As long as they're cleaned and oiled periodically, they'll run forever. Out of all the Marx motors I've worked on, I haven't found a single one that didn't come back to some degree. I found a motor that was sitting in water for many many years. The center contact was completely green, the wheels were stuck, and all it took was a little WD40 and it came back.
