How to service a mixing desk part 3 - Mixer Cleaning

Музыка

How to service a mixing desk. Mixer Cleaning. Mixing Desk Service. - With the chassis empty, it's time to clean the PCBs. It's best to wear a glove when doing this as static from your hands can cause issues. First I go over the PCBs with cans of compressed air to remove the worst of the dust - do this away from where you're working so the dust doesn't go over the open mixing desk or the other PCBs. Next use a flux brush as a dusting brush and thoroughly go between and around every component on the PCB.
Now's the fun part. Grab the Deoxit D5 and put a tiny amount on every button, switch and knob shaft. If you press the can very lightly a small amount will dribble out rather than have a huge amount spraying everywhere. It's quicker to do a few buttons at a time or a few shafts at a time. press the button repeatedly to really work the D5 in and turn the knob shafts several times until they loosen up. The knob shafts should feel really nice once the D5 has been worked in.
Once you'e gone over ever knob, button and switch, use some 99.9% Isopropyl alcohol and spray it over the PCB. Work this in using a new flux brush. This should evaporate fairly quickly and should clean off any gunk or residue from other products you've used.
This is a Mackie 24 8 desk which may look like a large format mixing desk but it isn't. Each group of 8 channels come on 1 PCB and the same goes for the master section so it's a simple and easy desk to take apart.

I know this is an old video. I was complaining that I had to do my 8 channel mixer. Then I saw this video and I stopped complaining. Hahaha OMG! What a job you have to do.This did work for me thank you for the help.

A lesson that I have learned time ago while I was cleaning a potentiometer is to avoid at any cost to spray isopropyl alcohol DIRECTLY into the them, because it will completely destroy them. After opening the potentiometer I found that the material on the wiper tip (probably carbon) was completely dissolved.

Canned air has moisture , I normally spray my radio boards with isoprop then spray with air and dab dry with paper towels and brush, then repeat without the canned air. 😊

Hi liked your video but thought it was a bit overkill, i.e cleaning the back of the PCB! Yes, clean the component side as a build-up of dust on components can cause them to overheat and so reduce their working lifetime. We had an analog studio in the early 80s, just as the digital age started, we had a Soundcraft series 2, 24/16/8/2 desk the last one they made. (No chips, all transistors). And the Soundcraft 16 track on 1-inch tape recorder. To clean the faders and pots we used RS contact cleaner, although on my Fostex desk WD40 seems to work fine. And for the chassis, we used RS foam cleaner, (RS being Radio Spares, a big name in the UK). Now I use "Pitney Bowes DIRECT Anti-Static Foam Cleaner". Seems to be fine on all hard surfaces, doesn't cause any probs if it gets in plugs or skts. And my final suggestion, to keep your desk in top condition, at the end of a session, or when you're cleaning or hoovering a cover over the desk will save you an awful lot of cleaning. And believe me, you don't know how lucky you are that you don't have to go through all the tape head cleaning and de-magging that we had to do. Still really enjoyed your video pls keep them coming.

Glad I missed the tape era. I have recorded a bit on tape but they had DAT and ADAT in the college studio so made life easier.

Nice video and very helpful, nice intent behind it. I am always a bit surprised by the "industry standard" (?) idea that it is better to use a can of compressed air to blow away any dust as opposed to the general idea for everything else (houses for example), that using a vacuum cleaner is a better idea! I bought a great little set of attachments from (I think,) CPC (or was it Ebay) to convert a household vac to a mini-vac and it serves me very well. I know that when I am using it it is sucking away all the dust as opposed to just redistributing it...keep up the great work!

That’s a seriously good point. Oddly it’s never crossed my mind when sorting mixing desks but it was the first thing I thought of when cleaning out my PC. I have a high powered blower for electrics now, wonder if I can do some mods to a household mini-vac like you have as that’d make far more sense

Great Videos, thank you for posting these 👍 was very helpful. Just wondering if you had done a full check of board for any problems prior to disassembly for cleaning, so as to be able to check those problems areas at the same time with multimeter and sine generator etc.

H, thank you for a great series on cleaning a mixing desk. I have to say It has given me the confidence to try it myself as the main L/R fader on my desk occasionally only delivers on one side. I couldn't make out when you were cleaning the faders if you cleaned inside the slot and would you normally spray the fader with DeOxit the same as the pots? Thanks again.

Thanks for the comment. As long as you take your time and let everything dry properly before reassembly then there isn’t much that can go wrong. I only clean the fader casings (which will probably be coated in grime) and spray faderlube inside them. If you have any questions, please ask and I’ll happily help

Nice video series on deep cleaning a board. I have a few questions. I have a Mackie ONYX 1620 mixer with FireWire that I basically got it for a song. I plan to use with my Mac Pro and Logic Pro 10. The board has a few issue that I wasn't aware. Mainly, scratchy gain pots but more aggravating is it has several scratchy EQ knobs. I could almost live with the scratchy gain pots as once you set them, generally you don't touch them again during recording. However, when you try and adjust the bass on a channel and it's scratchy during recording, this is unacceptable. So, my biggest question here is: Does this process you're doing here fix scratchy or noisy pots. Or should I replace the bad pots completely. I see they are only a couple of bucks each. I have 8 scratchy gain pots and about 8 scratchy EQ pots. Everything else on this board seem to work just fine. What say you?

Personally I’d open it up and use some contact cleaner on the pots. Twist them around a load and you’ll feel them free up. Wipe off any excess. If the pots are PCB mounted they can be a nightmare to replace. It’s worth spending extra for the Deoxit Contact cleaner. Those FireWire Mackie desks are great, I seriously considered getting one

Hi mate, my mackie 32.8bus all functional but my led meter doesn't light up on the Bus section, master works fine. Is the bus section hard to get at? Hoping it's just loose ribbon or so. Cheers

Is there any alternative to the Isopropyl Alcohol? Spent two full days in two different cities trying to get hold of some and I would prefer not to buy some online. Also would regular contact cleaner do as opposed to that deoxit stuff cos I could do without the £20 difference in price

I'm not sure on an alternative i'm afraid but hardware shops tend to sell that kind of thing. I've always bought it from amazon. With regard to the contact cleaner i'm sure any contact cleaner would be fine but the Deoxit range is used universally when it comes to cleaning studio equipment. I have no idea why it costs so much but it really does the job and I've never been brave enough to risk using anything else as any down time would be catastrophic. What I will say about Deoxit is that you can also use it when servicing all your studio equipment. I know this series is in respect of a mixing desk but the same approach applies to preamps, compressors and other analogue studio gear.

Try CPC if you're in the UK or Digikey if USA. Not sure about elsewhere.

You can spray contact cleaner , then squirt some isoprop with a needle dropper, while working the fader blow with compressed air then finish with Deoxit F5 or CRC226 Eectronic Lubricant...you do not want to spray down the potentiometer shaft as I will dissolve the grease that gives it that nice tight drag feel. 😊

Should/can you use fader lube on the rotary pots? Seems like it might be advisable to prevent wear...? Also, are the ribbon cables labeled? How do you keep track of which ones go where?

I used contact cleaner on the pots, I’m not sure about using fader lube on them, sorry. I take a sharpie and label the ribbon cables as I go. Also take pictures at every step of the way as it’s easy to get bits mixed up and backwards
