Clean & lubricate mixer channels | Tascam 244

Ғылым және технология

In this video I clean and lubricate the various potentiometers and switches of a mixer channel I removed from a vintage Tascam 244 Portastudio in a previous video. You can follow a smilar process for most audio mixers and other analogue cassette and tape multitrack recorders e.g Tascam, Yamaha, Fostex, etc.
Its a three step process -
1) use contact cleaner and physical agitation- thats moving the switches and pots a bit - to loosen and dirt inside the recesses
2) blow the dirty contact fluid out of the recesses and soak up the excess. I use an adapted airbed pump but cans of compressed air do fine.
3) Apply an appropriate electrical lubricant - in my case Caig Deoxit Fader Lube, but there are alternatives - to all moving parts.
I'll be following this video with one showing how I pry open the cavity of the fader to get a serious build-up of dust and debris clear of the contacts...its not always necessary, but this unit was pretty neglected when I got hold of it.

Servisol Super 10 is a lubricant too? But anyway the process you used and products Servisol Super 10 and then the DeoxIT F100L Lub. Would this be a safe and effective way to clean sticky car switches say like a push button heater control?

Not sure how much I want to completely take apart the mixer section as my electronics knowledge and expertise are pretty limited. Is any of this is doable from the front or with the back panel off?

Not really mate. Or at least it would me much more difficult without removing the mixer strips first. I can reassure you though that exactly zero understanding of electronics is required to carry out this task; all thats needed is to remove three screws and two [plugs per mixer strip to get them out (see my video on this)- If you can unplug cable. turn a screwdriver and press down the button of an aerosol can, you're laughing!

@Tetrakan Supermonobloc Hi! Thanks for a brilliant video. Ive had my tascam 244 on service for a problem tha occurs in playback, where there are short irregular white noice like-sounds. The tech has recapped the dbx and the channel which had the most issues (appears on all channel but less on some), but the problem did not go away. He has no idea what could be wrong with it. All other functions are working. Any ideas what it could be? Keep up the good work!

Hi, thanks for watching. It could be the proprietary DBX chips are bad, in which case your only solution would be to buy another faulty 244 on the cheap in the hope that the chips on the donor are good and sell on the rest for parts (if you are patient about getting your money out and can be bothered to disassemble its possible to make a profit this way - there's a guy based in UK called Tascam Ninja and that's his business model) Also it strikes me that if the problem is common to all channels, boards where the 4 tape channels are combined into the stereo buss such as the power/amplifier PCB would have been a better option for a recap? Not slagging off your tech btw, I do understand why someone in a professional context would not want to keep throwing parts and labour at an unfamiliar unit!

Not that I know of, but I've got a ton of spares to sell (bearing in mind, I'm in Scotland). Msg me on fb or Instagram if that might work

I am having difficulty with my panning. It seems I have tried every way of accomplishing it, but my machine will not pan tracks. Do you have any input on this?

Its hard to answer this without knowing a bit more about your issue ...until the channel signal hits the pan control all four channels are monaural, so if there is a fault with the pan switches or stereo amplifier (later in the chain) this might explain your issue but really I'd need a more detailed description, maybe some videos with stereo audio documenting the problem, if you link to youtube video or message me via my facebook page with such a video , maybe i can help?

I figured it out. I guess the machine only monitors mono, my panning shows up when I line out to a mixdown.

My DJ controller slider channels are staticy and crackling when I move them, do I just spray a little Super 10 down into them and wiggle up and down or do I have to open the device to do it?

Probably you can get away with not disassembling the unit but it must be turned off and Follow up with compressed air and some sort of fader or switch lubricant and leave enough time for the contact cleaner to evaporate before powering up again.
