When in Germany I can't walk past a Schnelle Imbiss without grabbing a sneaky bratty. As a child growing up in Gutersloh in the late 60s and then as a soldier in the 80s, I was in heaven with all the food and beers! Danke...

People of German heritage born and living in Sheboygan, Wisconsin eat Bratwurst grilled over charcoal and eat these as a sandwich. The classic way to eat this is called a double Brat served in a hard roll made in Sheboygan and featuring two brats served in the roll.

Growing up fifth generation German immigrant/homesteaders in a German community, we grew up on bratwurst with caraway (Kimmel), as well as raw beef and onions on rye. German potato salad was also a family staple. It was what we always had on July 4th.

I spent a couple years in southern Germany in the '80's and loved all the food but the Brats were always my favorite, usually with mustard and mashed potatoes. Also I never liked sauerkraut before living there but I loved it , usually with meat and other good things. I miss everything about Germany but the food I think about often. 😁

You are 100% correct. It's tough to beat a truly good Wisconsin bratwurst, served on a bun with pickle relish, chopped onion, kraut, mustard and ketchup. A personal favorite are the Aldi's Bavarian style brats (made in Germany! Danke!!) from the grill during our fleeting summer. Nothing beats a bratwurst cooked on the backyard grill washed down with a cold beer! Mmmm, summer love.

When I was in Kassel in (ahem) 1971 the street vendors served bratwurst in a very small bun with a mustard sauce that I believe was made out of mustard, mayo and horseradish. That mustard sauce inspired me to create my own and I use a hot mustard available in America (Mister Mustard Original Hot Mustard) mayo and horseradish which I also used to make potato salad (mustard based). In my potato salad I use red potatoes, pickles, radishes, carrots and celery (julienned). I also use my mustard sauce to make deviled eggs.

Grandma's saurkraut was bacon cooked slowly rendering out all the fat, then take the bacon bits out before they are burned. Add a little beer to pan to de-glaze the pan and add your favorite kraut. And cook slowly to soften then add bacon bits back and put on brats and bread. She mad hard rolls like baguette bread but bun sized. Oh my! Like Germany in a spread! You can make it very soft or just heat it a bit so cabbage is still crispy

This really dates me but in 1969 I spent a week in a little town called Hemer...near Iserlohn somewhere near Dusseldorf. There was a street vendor there who did a bratwurst with a curry sauce...and yes it was called a curry wurst. It was about as good as it gets. I still remember it to this day. Nice video. Thanks

I'm German and my family makes their own bratwurst and sauerkraut... and I must say that this is 100% correct. My mother's family is from Hesse where there is a pride in simplicity which I adore. My father's family is a VERY traditional farming Westfalen family and it seems like every family has their own variation. I think I actually became MORE German watching this video! :D I will add one thing: PRETZELS! Especially with Weißwurst!!!

I personally did not discover Bratwurst until late in life. I discovered it as a "Street Food" in Calgary, Alberta, Served in a bun smothered with Saurkraut. As a child we had what is call Mennonite sausage. BUT, I was brought up with exactly the sort of food and recipes you demonstrate on this episode. Talk about comfort food! Every single dish demonstrated brought back memories as a child of similar food. Thanks!

All kinds of good ideas in this one! We must try some gravy like sauce with onions and wine in it. If you ever visit Milwaukee, Wisconsin you will not get away without your fill of "brats and sauer kraut"! Growing up we had boiled potatoes, sliced and fried as you demonstrate, more than any other way. They likely included fried onions, and in those days it was in bacon fat, not butter, which is better. And it is not even dinner time yet!

Thank you very much for this! Grew up in the U.S.A. all my life and had the good fortune to be stationed in Germany a few years while i was in the Army. I actually like to sear my bratwurst and then deglaze the pan with the sauerkraut. I've no idea if that's common practice, but it gives a lot to the sauerkraut

We in Austria also serve as side dish warm Krautsalat with Bacon. Cabbage in fine slices just blanched. Bacon cutted in stripes or cubes and crispy roasted in pork lard or goose lard then deglazed with white wine-vinegar and a bit of water = becoming the "vinegrette" which is then seasoned with salt, pepper, caraway and a pinch of sugar and then the blanched cabbage added and last but not least a bit of neutral oil that all mixed up and then served warm. Additionally to the mustard we use just "fresh grated" horseraddish and not that bought cream mix you showed. A thicker sized Bratwurst can be deep fried as well...at first cut a heringbone pattern/"Fischgrätmuster" on the surface round about 5mm deep and then put it in the hot oil bath
