Man from where should i start to show this channel
What a nice and useful lesson! Easy going is the best way of teaching spoken English. The main difficulty for us foreigners, above all for Italians and Germans (!) who pronounce clearly all words, is to understand the way native speakers are shortening and contracting words and expressions, and not enough, moreover also quite lazy in pronounciation. John Gray, an American friend of mine (from L.A. - a retired literature professor at U.C.L.A ) - said to me that native spoken common-trivial English is the best way of barbarizing a language (!) This said, without intention of being offensive. What makes us often crazy, is that after years of useless efforts, we hardly can understand a modern English fast spoken movie or worse, a comedy. All is contracted, minced and chewed so fastly that we need subtitles. In a short: common spoken modern English seems to me a sort of a dialect or an idiom, anyway far different from the written form! However thanks a lot Emma: it's surely not your fault for this - for us - so strange custom.

Hi Marco, thanks for your detailed comment! It's really interesting to hear your perspective. It seems like an awful joke 😣... My students spend years developing their English skills to a point where they feel confident enough to step into an English conversation with native English speakers, only to realise that we *tear apart* many of the rules they studied so diligently. It's like SPOKEN English is another language to learn on top of written English!!

Dear Emma, I am originally from Poland and have been in UK for the last 15 years... I didn't speak English at all when I came here for the first time and have found myself struggled a lot to get my confidence with speaking. I am still much better with texting rather than speaking or even understanding( specially over the phone😦). I guess I have learnt mostly through years of employment within different environments...but still try to get better. So I would like to thank you for your effort and all those topics you are talking about. These lessons are brilliant and so useful! Greetings from Nottinghamshire :)

Thank you so much. I took several English as a Second Language courses in the US. Unfortunately, many ESL instructors are Eastern Indians. I have no problems with them, but American community colleges are replete with Indian teachers. They have accent, and how they can teach me this sort of things? I have been in the US for 30 years, and sometimes I don't understand what people say. They speak so fast that I am having difficulties to pick up a word. Now, I am learning from you. You have so much passion that makes me smile.

Hey! to be an Australian you've got a beautiful clear accent.. love it. I took years ago a three months intensive English course at TAFE Queensland... good memories. The hardest task to English students is to understand, and then to use, that contracted speaking way that you natives use, it's just kind of another language. Your classes are very focused in this topic. Thank you very much, mate.

Teacher Emma thank you so much. I need to learn more english language.
So when I don't hear the "h" in : "I've heard about you." Nothing wrong with my ears ! Good to know !
Another similar expression that I find common is the question, "How 'r you doin'?" Or, in a complete sentence, "How are you doing?" Instead of "How's it going?"
@alandillon968
3 жыл бұрын
"How's it going"? or is used more commonly by Austrailians while Americans tend to say, "Have a nice day" British tend to say, "Hi yeah, how are yeah"? which is "Hello how are you"? "Hi houz yeah doin"? "Hi What's up to"? Which is, " What is going on with you in your life since we last met" or "what your doing today"? Even "where are you going"? Or "What yeah doin" If meeting in the street. "Hi what's up" again a greeting, asking what you are doing or where you are going. "Hi yeah, long time no see" is a greeting to someone you see occasionally.
Thanks for this helpfull and great lesson, as usual. Congrats!
Enjoyed with you Emma .. thank you so much for that lesson
