I wish coating manufacturers would step up and explain these coatings don't last if they aren't "topped" or maintained, and they don't really repel anything if they get any sort of mineral buildup. They are advertised as some kind of amazing shield. Average people aren't gonna have acid washes or water spot remover or understand why. The entire industry does itself a disservice by marketing "7 year" coatings that will never live up to the expectations set.

She did wash it (in her way) as water alone blasted off the dirt it just added more issues with water spots than helped in removing the dirt. Her intentions were good in trying to prevent scratches but after our conversation she learned safer ways to wash and knows moving forward she needs to wash it every few months at least or at minimum go through a touchless wash and use soap to help clean.

Really, really informative and helpful video. Awesome procedure: it took my Fusion's 6-month-old prosumer coating (Turtle Wax's anniversary graphene paste wax) and literally made it perform like day 1. I'd done a lot more maintenance than your customer, for sure. But it had endured a cross-country trip through huge stretches of desert sands and 110+° days, and it was clogged to the point that I assumed I'd need to recoat it. Thank you for saving me the hassle and labor, and showing an amazing and gentle procedure for saving these coatings. You're awesome! 👍♥️

If it wasn't washed the coating won't go anywhere unless removed by birds dropping or insects. I would do a vary strong presoak or 2 then contact wash going over everything with a good 3 passed rinse and use a good water spot remover and feel the paint for contamination if it's present then use a clay towel with a dedicated clay lube or heavy soap mixture if the paint won't bead like new after that then I'd do a acid wash but usually they come right back.

Chelsea... one trick I have used when doing chemical decontamination is to spray the iron remover onto the vehicle, then use my foam cannon to foam the vehicle to "seal in" the iron remover and really allow it to work (I like a thick foam to do this). The foam that drips from the vehicle is a lovely shade of pink! I then rinse and do a contact wash to remove any residues.

  • @attention2detailswchelsea

The chemical decon still needs agitation to break the bond the rail dust has with the vehicle so while it may bleed pink it may not fully be removing the fallout without actually agitating or massaging it off the vehicle. Have you ever respray er decon to see if it still bleeds purple?

No I reuse them. Soak in apc immediately after use for at minimum 15 minutes as the surfactants help prevent the coating from cross linking and curing then launder with rags to riches and add white vinegar to replenish hydrophobics. I normally do an extra rinse and dry on low and get several uses out if my towels. Applicators may get a little crusty and if they do I just use them for trim and tires dressings

Would have been a great experiment if a panel or two had been left uncoated. We could have observed the following: - did the owner find that the coated panels responded better to the contactless hosing off? - did the coated panels look any better than the uncoated panels when the car was brought in for this detail, before work began? - were the coated panels any easier to clean & decon, during this detail? - after this detail, did the coated panels look any different to the uncoated panels? I.e - were they "protected" from anything?

Maybe time to have a once or twice a year wash clinic for a group of customers. Shown them how to wash and care for it. A few hours and then maybe not afraid to wash. But reality is that some may have good intentions but life gets in the way. I tell people at very least do a quick rinse-less wash to get pollen off as soon as possible. 20-30 minutes and better than nothing.
