How To Safely Make Tonic Water At Home
Welcome Friends! Today in the kitchen we are going to make tonic water, and I know that as soon as I said tonic water there's probably already people writing comments down below about how dangerous
this is. You know what; they're probably right. It is a fairly dangerous, it is fraught with difficulties. One of the reasons that this could be construed as a very dangerous thing to make is that the main
ingredient is cinchona bark. Cinchona bark contains quinine, and too much quinine for certain people will cause problems.
This is not a covid-19 cure, treatment, or medicine. This is not a Coronavirus cure, treatment, or medicine. This is not the same as hydroxychloroquine, and can't be used to treat or cure covid-19 or coronavirus.
Ingredients:
750 mL water
3g - 4g cinchona bark, chopped, not powdered
9g gentian root, chopped, not powdered
18g citric acid
5 mL coarse salt
2 cardamom pods
5 allspice berries
8 black peppercorns
2 small star anise (optional)
27g fresh lemon zest
27g fresh orange zest
12g fresh lime zest
15g fresh lemongrass (chopped)
1Kg sugar
Method:
Add all the ingredients (except the sugar) in a pan and bring just to a boil.
Partially cover and let it simmer 8-10 minutes.
Strain through a fine mesh strainer and then pass through a fine coffee filter.
Put this liquid back into the pot with the sugar, and heat to just below a boil.
Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved.
Chill and store in an airtight container in the fridge.
If you will be storing for more than a week, add 30 mL of vodka.
Mix 1 part Tonic syrup, with 5-6 parts carbonated water.

At 6:00 you see, that you clearly ruined. Maybe skip ALL the extra spices. Make basic real tonic first... looks like extra spices ruined it. Try adding zest after boiling. Remove from heat, put zest for 1 min and pour trough sieve. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHuClpSmkpjLmKw.html

The "extra spice " flavours comes from mixing with gin. Not from adding spice to tonic. That's why gin&tonic was invented, to give tonic nice flavours from good quality gin.
My grandmother upon feeling a bit sick would get a bottle of tonic water and have a glass a day untill the sickness passed. She lived to 92 with very little sickness in her life. I think we have forgotten too many tips from the past to help us stay healthy

Does she really work at NASA, or do you just mean she looks like a "rocket scientist"? Because if she does work at NASA, that would just be perfect!!! Lol! Although, I don't know if NASA would have facilities in Canada. But then again... what do I know? If NASA were smart they would. Ha!

I absolutely love this channel. I love the part in each episode where the lady, who I assume is your wife, comes in for the tasting. The way you two talk with one another is wonderful. You are not over-the-top annoying, as if you're trying to "sell" something... instead, I really do get the feeling that you two live in my neighborhood, and I could pop over and see what Glen and his wife (Julie?) are up to today. It's kind of like... a very modern Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, but for adults.

I still love a simplified version of your Kahlua. (in quart jar: 1 cup coffee grounds, 1 Tbs vanilla, 1 Tbs cocoa powder, 1 tsp cinnamon and fill with high proof spiced rum... steep for 2 days.... strain.... add syrup of 3/4 cup water and sugar). Everybody loves it. Thank you.
I love tonic water. sometimes I just drink it on it's own with lime, or lemon.
Thank you for starting with a warning!) Very responsible of you I am "addicted" to the espresso tonic, but currently with a war raging in my country, there is a shipment problem 🙃 No tonic for me this summer~ BUT I've got a blend for brewing tonic and I really needed a tutorial like yours to get me through the process) Hopefully it turns out delish ;)

Thankyou - you are amazing! Love your channel and delivery. Give us all the details
Thank you for been honest about the bark I can't get it anyway. I use Grapefruit and lemon skins. Lime sometimes.
I do it pretty much the same way. I use different spices for my personal taste, but I'm also using the juices from orange, lime and lemon. But I will try it this way.
Very interesting video! I like when I learn something new!
It looks so beautiful while it is cooking!
The recipe is interesting and the health warnings and link to a webpage are very helpful. The health effects can be serious if the advice is not followed, but this recipe appears to be very safe. I look forward to the cocktail videos coming in a few weeks.

Far and away my favorite tonic water is Schweppes, both for its flavor profile and for its pinpoint carbonation. Getting the carbonation right when making/mixing tonic at home would be my biggest issue.
I just made this. This is really easy and only took 1 hour from start til I gave my wife a drink. She likes it. I think It needs more cinchona as i like the classic tonic taste. I will try again.

Hello glen i have struggled for 3 years to figureout a way to get clear quinine powder looks like the beverage makers use a very tiny amount of pure quinine and use bitter orange extracts to flavour the tonic water.
Agreed with earlier comments. Drop the cocktail recipes Thursday nights so we can all try them on Friday! :D
Thank you I thank you but I want to know where do you find the ingredients
you could make a high potency bark extract and give it to a pharmacy, university or Pharmacorp for a gc. the dosage of a liquid is a lot easier and safer than powder or shreds.
I have a tonic water (sunny select) which is 6 year old in my cabinet close/unopen, is it still safe to use in cocktail .

cool.. does it glow under black lights? I have very fond memories of midnight bowling as a teenager where they put tonic is most everything because it glows.
What was the bubbly water you added to the tonic quinine mix?
love this channel i wont lie
Quinine glows under black light. You can see how intensely quininated your tonic water is and adjust by bark infused water to tune it. I guess

Would it be possible to use a dandelion root instead of cinchona bark? Dandelion roots are extremely bitter if you have ever tried to taste them.
@5:05...huuuhhgggjhjhj perfect, that's perfect! 😂😂
Does the flavour of the citrus peels come through?
Is bitter lemon available in Canada? If so you should try to make it. It has quinine
Did you add star anise in a later batch?
Hi Glen. Great video. I made it and my family loves it. Still need to fine tune the recipe. Somehow this was a common question from every one. Is there a way to clarify it ?
@JC-wv7om
2 жыл бұрын
Clarification tablets like those used in winemaking and brewing or a few drops of pectinex might do it without affecting the flavour profile significantly. There's also bar techniques like using agar agar or gelatin, but I'm not sure if (or how much) they'd soften the profile of something like this.
What brand of saucepan do you use in this video? It's beautiful!

Where does one can get gentian root in a safe manner? Don't want to order from some odd website...
Thanks for this. The only reason I would want to make my own tonic is to produce a non sugar product, using a natural low carb sweetner.
If your having leg cramps or chalie horses drink a few onces tonic water & it immediately disappears..Thanks for info.
Did you update the discription box abt the covid19 ?

I thought that carbonated water, club soda, seltzer and tonic were the same thing! 😅
@justarel
4 жыл бұрын
Carbonated water aka seltzer water is simply water with dissolved carbon dioxide in it. Club soda is a form of unflavored carbonated water with potassium bicarbonate, potassium sulfate or sodium citrate added to replicate constituents commonly found in mineral waters. :)
@Paul_K_
4 жыл бұрын
those first three are functionally the same thing, but tonic water is closer to regular sodas since it's both strongly flavored and sweetened.
@justarel
4 жыл бұрын
@Wu Me I think it's a personal taste thing, i've only mixed drinks club soda, San Peligrino, and Topo Chico and had San, Topo and Perrier straight preferring San and Topo over Perrier mainly because in the last few years it doesn't seem to be as clean tasting with it almost being a touch soapy like the bottles were washed with ivory and rinsed poorly. Club is good for mixing if you want something completely clean but with a mineral hint like scotch and soda, then San. San then Topo if drinking straight though Nash Finch (now Spartan Nash) had a nice mineral water that was bottled in italy and imported and sold under the Nash Brothers brand.

@@Paul_K_ I forgot to mention the sweetened part in my reply, glad you mentioned it.
I'm struck by the fact he didn't make like a couple of gallons. seems like a lot of work for very little liquid. Also, I disovered that quinine lowers blood sugar itself, so the added sugar is probably barely balanced, by it. I have a question, could you boil all those peels for a tremendous whole Vit C boost, by itself.
Glen, I know you've done carbonated water, but how about a club soda recipe? Im not sure how much sodium bicarb to add or other minerals....Storebought club soda to me here in the US is pretty lame. I don't drink alcohol but love a good club soda. Cheers friend!

I followed your video instructions and made some homemade Tonic Syrup. It turned out perfect, however, I have a question: I would like to make my own soda water using my Soda Stream. I will be carbonating the water in 1 quart bottles, and then add the Tonic Syrup to the bottles after carbonation, so my question is, "How much Tonic Syrup should I add to the one quart of soda water to be within safe limits?"
i'm always a safety last kind of guy so this appeals to me.
