How To Safely Make Tonic Water At Home
Welcome Friends! Today in the kitchen we are going to make tonic water, and I know that as soon as I said tonic water there's probably already people writing comments down below about how dangerous
this is. You know what; they're probably right. It is a fairly dangerous, it is fraught with difficulties. One of the reasons that this could be construed as a very dangerous thing to make is that the main
ingredient is cinchona bark. Cinchona bark contains quinine, and too much quinine for certain people will cause problems.
This is not a covid-19 cure, treatment, or medicine. This is not a Coronavirus cure, treatment, or medicine. This is not the same as hydroxychloroquine, and can't be used to treat or cure covid-19 or coronavirus.
Ingredients:
750 mL water
3g - 4g cinchona bark, chopped, not powdered
9g gentian root, chopped, not powdered
18g citric acid
5 mL coarse salt
2 cardamom pods
5 allspice berries
8 black peppercorns
2 small star anise (optional)
27g fresh lemon zest
27g fresh orange zest
12g fresh lime zest
15g fresh lemongrass (chopped)
1Kg sugar
Method:
Add all the ingredients (except the sugar) in a pan and bring just to a boil.
Partially cover and let it simmer 8-10 minutes.
Strain through a fine mesh strainer and then pass through a fine coffee filter.
Put this liquid back into the pot with the sugar, and heat to just below a boil.
Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved.
Chill and store in an airtight container in the fridge.
If you will be storing for more than a week, add 30 mL of vodka.
Mix 1 part Tonic syrup, with 5-6 parts carbonated water.

At 6:00 you see, that you clearly ruined. Maybe skip ALL the extra spices. Make basic real tonic first... looks like extra spices ruined it. Try adding zest after boiling. Remove from heat, put zest for 1 min and pour trough sieve. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/jHuClpSmkpjLmKw.html

The "extra spice " flavours comes from mixing with gin. Not from adding spice to tonic. That's why gin&tonic was invented, to give tonic nice flavours from good quality gin.

I absolutely love this channel. I love the part in each episode where the lady, who I assume is your wife, comes in for the tasting. The way you two talk with one another is wonderful. You are not over-the-top annoying, as if you're trying to "sell" something... instead, I really do get the feeling that you two live in my neighborhood, and I could pop over and see what Glen and his wife (Julie?) are up to today. It's kind of like... a very modern Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, but for adults.

Clarification tablets like those used in winemaking and brewing or a few drops of pectinex might do it without affecting the flavour profile significantly. There's also bar techniques like using agar agar or gelatin, but I'm not sure if (or how much) they'd soften the profile of something like this.

@Wu Me I think it's a personal taste thing, i've only mixed drinks club soda, San Peligrino, and Topo Chico and had San, Topo and Perrier straight preferring San and Topo over Perrier mainly because in the last few years it doesn't seem to be as clean tasting with it almost being a touch soapy like the bottles were washed with ivory and rinsed poorly. Club is good for mixing if you want something completely clean but with a mineral hint like scotch and soda, then San. San then Topo if drinking straight though Nash Finch (now Spartan Nash) had a nice mineral water that was bottled in italy and imported and sold under the Nash Brothers brand.
