To learn more about stereo splitting: • Pedalboard Tips #4 - H...
I've received some messages lately of people who are still confused by stereo rigs.
In this video, I will break down the very basic principles of what you need to do to get a stereo pedalboard. The different examples will show you what is necessary to do according to different combinations and placement of mono & stereo pedals.
Of course, there are other ways of setting up a stereo rig, but I think this is the most simple way to do it.
Pedals featured:
TC Electronic Polytune
Walrus Audio Deep Six Compressor
Strymon El Capistan
Strymon DIG
Neunaber Wet Stereo Reverb
Fulltone Supa-Trem

Wow! I just happened to stumble upon your pedalboard tips #6 and man, I think I'm ditching my drive pedals now to focus on a stereo rig, particularly an ambient setup. The difference between mono and stereo is just massive! Right now I only have the gfi clockword delay v2 and a marshall reflector reverb, and I hope that could work out fine. Now it's time to get a 2nd amp. Thanks a bunch sir for the eye opener :)

Thank you very much for this video! I am new to effects pedals so mine are all basic with only 1 input and 1 output and they are all at the front of the amp. I used the black and red splitter from the output of the last pedal in the chain and then connected the 2 cables to 2 amps. I just kept both amps on a clean setting and I got a much fuller sound than I do with just 1 amp. Now I can experiment with different amp settings and maybe placing an effect or 2 after the split so it just goes to 1 amp. Thanks!

Nice an helpful videolesson, Antoine! BUT: You SHOULD run your signals from your last stereo pedal through an isolated ABY splitter to avoid hum and posible frequency cancellation (reduced signal over some frequencies). It also might be hazardous without an isolated splitter if your gear is not proberly grounded. The splitter must therefore be equipped with electrical isolated outputs like the Lehle Little Dual ABY splitter or others. A low cost splitter like i.e. the FenderABY is only equipped with a simple contact switcher and is not reccomendable in my opinion.

For the last exemple, the solution is very simple if you want to keep the mono term at the end;A/B box (Morley for exemple). You get in mono and you have two outputs: A for amp 1 B for amp 2.

I doubt someone who is new to stereo pedalboard would like to use an A/B box, programmable loop pedals, MIDI synchronisation. But clearly, that's really nice to see some other solutions in the comment section, I like it, keep them coming :)

Here's my recommendation. Do everything pre-amp in mono, then put everything post-amp through as few boxes as possible. There are some great multi-effects boxes with delay, chorus, flanging, phasing, tremolo etc. all there in one box. I don't use pedals for that sort of thing. I use a Line 6 multi-effects unit, but there are plenty of options. It makes things sooooo much simpler. You can have preset configurations that you can recall with a single button, and it can go directly into a PA or computer. No double amplifier so less equipment to lug around. Simple!

True stereo tremolo pedal that you could put at the end of your chain - Source Audio Vertigo. Source Audio is up there with TC Electronic and Strymon for stereo pedals. In fact, they go one better with true stereo drive pedals (the LA Lady, Kingmaker and Aftershock ones), so you can have practically all of your signal chain in stereo.

I should've said in my first comment, the other true stereo tremolo I know of is the EHX Super Pulsar. It's incredibly fancy, it has to be one of, if not the, fanciest tremolo pedal there is. But it's expensive, at €259. The Vertigo is €178. (Thomann prices). They're both great. The Vertigo will do practically anything you'd normally ask from a tremolo. The Super Pulsar will do that plus a few more unique and interesting things.

Doing this way, you are going to have ground loops hum in the amps. So don't forget to use a ground isolator like the Radial Shotgun. And you have to be careful about phase problems between amps. For example some amps reverse the phase on the lead channel and others don't reverse it.

+Tip : You need isolation when using 2 amps.. My recommendation would be to buy a Humdinger from TheGigRig to avoid ground loops and phasing issues when connecting in stereo, before you fry something.

I'm not an expert on the matter or electricity in general, there is a whole episode on multi amp setups on That Pedal Show channel on KZread that I suggest checking out. My guess is there is some interaction between amps which requires isolation of both instrument levels, and also to phase de-sync can be an issue. A splitter device like the humdinger removes both problems.

Hey! I'm wondering what's considered the best options for a great, absolutely amazing "pitch shifter/Harmony effect"? Specifically with a 'digital piano, synth' and Rhodes. I imagine "stereo" is the better way to go in this situation. Not necessarily? The signal from my digital piano is probably also going to be more powerful than most effects pedals are made for right? So I'll start with a very low volume and test from there so that you don't damage the pedal. Is it worth getting a reamp box? Is one or two needed? How about just lowering the piano's volume line - to the outputs level to the level the pedals take. What gear would you personally recommend?

You can use the tremolo at the very end of a stereo pedal chain if you put it after only one of the two signals coming from the stereo pedal, while the other out goes straight to the amp. That way only one half will have the tremolo effect so that might sound weird and bad, but it might also be cool and definitely makes the stereo effect noticable.

Do you know if I can take two mono signals (e.g. one from my drives and one from my synth pedal) and combine these into a Strymon (Flint) stereo input by using a Y cable? From there I can feed Left (synth) and Right (drives) into L and R of my Boss Looper. I will then take the synth sound (with reverb, i.e. Left OUT) into the PA, and the drives (Right OUT) into my amp. Thanks!

I have a question .. the end of my chain is Guitar --- stereo chorus(one input and 2 outputs) --- stereo looper(2 inputs and 2 outputs) === to amp 1, amp 2 So the question is .. should I connect the 2 outputs of the chorus to the 2 inputs of the looper Or I just should connect the chorus via only 1 cable (the mono output) to the mono input of the Looper and then out of the two outputs of the looper to amp1 and amp2. It loooks like this 1. ---- Chorus ==Looper === amps or 2. ----- Chorus --- Looper === amps

The looper doesn't add any effect so splitting it there doesn't do anything for you. The chorus does, and the looper in stereo passes it on. Putting the chorus in mono defeats the purpose.

Hi, thanks for the explanations ! But I have a question : I have an Electro Harmonix Echo (1 input, 1 output) linked to my Strymon Mobius (2 inputs, 2 outputs). Do I have to split the output of my Electro Harmonix into 2 outputs to link it to the stereo inputs of my Strymon, or it doesn't matter as long as the 2 outputs of my Strymon are linked to 2 amplificators or in stereo with another pedal ? My question is, can I leave the second input of my Strymon Mobius unlinked ? Thanks a lot !

So if we have only one jack for the input and one Jack for the output can we assume that it is a mono pedal and if so how can we use it with stereo pedals in the stereo chain? How do you tell if they are mono or not?

Hi, Antoine! This video is very well made, and it's rare to see on youtube tutorial about this stereo thing (that always bugs me). I have this problem, want to record in stereo through audio interface: Guitar-->Strymon Sunset-->Timeline-->Big Sky-->Ditto Looper-->Audio Interface (Focusrite 2i2). If I understood what are you saying in the video, the best thing to do is to: 1) get rid of ditto at the end of signal since it's mono, then 2) place the timeline after the big sky and use the looper in the timeline to replace the ditto, then 3) use the stereo breakout cable and go straight in the audio interface (then in daw and set the track to stereo) Is it correct or I have to consider something else?

  • @AntoineMichaudGuitar

Great reasoning! However, there is no need for a breakout cable, since both your Big Sky and Timeline have stereo ins and outs! So you can come out of your Timeline with one cable for LEFT and one cable for RIGHT and plug them into your two inputs of your Scarlett. The only thing you will need is a good amplifier simulator plugin inside your DAW, or else it's going to sound dull a bit going straight into your interface without any emulation. Other solution is just to get a Ditto X4 who has stereo ins and outs, so you can keep your pedalboard chain untouched!

@@AntoineMichaudGuitar I don't know if it's possible to record simoultaneously from the two channels of the 2i2. If I remember correctly it's not possible. And if it's possible, I will have to record 2 mono tracks and then merge them together (on reaper, that it's what I use it's possible, but it's a clumsy long process). For this reason I opted for the breakout cable, since every input on the scarlett accept stereo signals, and it'll be much easier to record directly one stereo track. In the next weeks I will try both combination and let you know. Thanks for the quick reply! ;)

No, don't do that! I want to save you from a complicated setup for nothing! You can do much simpler! I have the Scarlett 2i2 myself and can indeed record 2 tracks at the same time. On the website it clearly says: ''Perfect for recording two mics at once!''. Even if you record 2 mono tracks, it IS a stereo track. You just have to pan one to the Left and the other to the Right and... BOOM! You got your stereo recording. I record like this since years! I find it even better than a stereo track, because with two mono tracks panned, you have seperate control on the volume of the left and right sides. So if you inadvertently recorded one side quieter than the other, you can adjust each side seperately, which you can't do on a summed up stereo track.

question. I have an ABY pedal running out to two amps. one amp running dry effects in front and another amp running wet effects in front. I have an (old) boss DD-3 delay to the wet amp and the DD3 has one Direct out. Is it possible to also route the Delay to the effects loop Return on the dry amp so that the wet amp AND the dry amp has the delay or do I need a new delay with 2 inputs and 2 outputs to do that? Hope that makes sense. Great video btw!!!

The third example in the video, what if I don't have that mono pedal at the end, but instead want that stereo signal in the end to go to one single guitar amp for stereo effects? Is that possible? Will that converter help?

You can't have stereo with a single mono amp. It's like asking to hear in stereo with a single earbud :-) it won't work! You need a second amp for stereo sound. Hope that helps!

Thank you for this video. I am running into some of the same compromise issues and I wonder if you've solved any issues since uploading this video? I am using a Roland JC40 and a Fender Vibrolux simultaneously, and I am running into an issue that seems unsolvable. The compromise is that I am currently forced to place my overdrive pedals (which I ONLY want to be sent to the Vibrolux) AFTER my two delay pedals, which I'd ideally prefer NOT to do. I'd like to have them set up the conventional way, overdrive--->delay. The ultimate goal is to send only my clean/modulation effects to the JC40 (which doesn't sound good with overdrive) while sending the entire chain including the overdrives to the Vibrolux. I can only do that by placing the overdrives after my delays, in between the only delay pedal I have with stereo outs (EHX Grand Canyon) and the last pedal in my chain which is the Strymon Blue Sky. The signal is then split to each amp via the Blue Sky's L/R stereo outputs. Is there anything I am overlooking? Thanks so much!

Hey man. You've got a great puzzle right here... The only way I could see that happening is if you used an ABY box straight after your guitar, then plug the A output of the ABY box to your drives pedals, then directly to Amp#1. After that, plug the B output to your Amp#2 immediately without passing through any other pedal. Then you would need all your modulation/delay/reverb pedals to have 2 inputs and 2 outputs each, and plug them in the effects loop of each of your amp. So Amp #1 would SEND to your first Modulation pedal Left input and RETURN to the Left output of your last reverb pedal. Then, same thing: Amp#2 would SEND to your first Modulation pedal Right input and RETURN to the Right ouput of your last reverb pedal. Finally, you would need to play on the Y (which means both amps at the same time) of your split box all the time. There is a lot of conditions: you need an ABY box, you need 2 amps that have effects loops available, and you need all of your mod/delay/reverb pedals to be dual input / dual output. I mean, that's a LOT of trouble just to to split overdrives :-)

Antoine Michaud, thank you for the detailed and thoughtful reply! I think I’ll just stay with what I have. I JUST got the Vibrolux which doesn’t have an effects loop and I am too in love with my delays to try and replace them with ones that have stereo ins/outs. I’m just gonna learn to love drive after delay!!

Do I need two cables from Timeline left/right Out into BigSky left/right IN, then 2 cables BigSky left/right Out into Stomp left/right In, and finally the Stomp (2 cables Out) into 2 channels of the board (2 DI boxes)?

How do you do this in the effects loop? I want to use my Mark V mesa boogie preamp for EQ and some small amount of distortion and then run into the Mark V power section and a Fender twin; so I need to use the effects loop of the Mark V. My guess is you connect the SEND output of the Mark V effects loop into the mono input of the first pedal, I use the mobius so I can divide into stereo there, go through my timeline and then my big sky, then take one cable, say right and plug it into the RETURN of the Mark V and then the other cable (left) into the front of my Fender, or into the RETURN input of the Fender’s loop. Does this sound reasonable? Or will I cause a huge explosion of some sort??

But I can find a video anywhere that actually shows that and clearly shows the connections on the back of each amp etc. Awesome if you can do a stereo vid thru send and return Also how to connect 2 heads... In my case with the 2 5150’s would I plug a cable from the preout?? Cheers Mike
