Haha I love how I was following along and when you plugged in your USB drive it literally looked like my setup! Same Sandisk flash drive, AMD fan and your case is almost exactly like mine.

If you choose the VHD option, you can create a VHD file on the USB drive. You should then fully boot and configure Windows as in your video. The difference is, now you can easily copy that VHD file to any disk on your PC as a backup (you can use 7Zip or similar to compress it). Also, you can copy the VHD file to an Easy2Boot multiboot USB drive (or Ventoy USB drive) and then legacy or MBR-boot to it via the USB drive's multiboot menu. You can add more VHDs to the USB drive so you can boot to many different editions, etc. Using a 'flat-file' installation as you have shown can be difficult to backup. Also Windows will refuse to format the USB drive if you later decide to re-purpose the USB drive because it thinks it has a live OS on it! Using a VHD resolves all these issues.

I use Flashboot as it is a lot less restrictive. A lot of flash drives don't work (speed?). I use NVMe to USB3 adaptors with a 128Gb NVME drive (SATA or PCI-e - both work). Great for demonstrations, recovery work and fixing things. However a Linux flash drive is a lot better (an awful lot better).

So many channels doing this, but this channel is awesome! (my taste) Cant wait for the nXt video sir. :) And your advice is always in the right time, and updated.

WORKS! i followed instructions. at 4:05 ish you mention it will take a long time, took 10 min. next step took 12hrs till i truned off. I FORGOT TO BOOT INTO External Device. when rebooted didn't take long. got stumped when Cortana asks me if i wanted to continue with Windows 7. thought i was about to delete my hard drive but decided to bite the bullet and that wasn't the case. i have a 32 GB drive with Win10 installed. i do notice the slight delay which is very minor. also have Ubuntu 20.04 on a flash drive. Useful tip as per usual. Great to use for testing, an emergency backup or on a friend's machine as a demo. I assume that the same process can be used with an external SSD, either in a case or simply with a Sata to USB lead.

Thanks the first and as of now only video to show the login process- my HP Laptop started giving me 3F0 error due to which even though my SSD is good - during boot up sometimes it launches windows and some times it doesnt This appears to a better alternative to factory reset because I dont remmber my license key for many softwares - hence cant do a factory reset for few months " I saw lot of videos on how to create boot usb but almost all were confusing , then I found few which explained about "Win To Go " but they didnt explain the actual Log In process So thanks for this. Few questions: 1) dont I need to reenter my Product Key for Win 10 when making this Win To Go ? 2) once logged in , Can I still access the Desktop & My Document folder of my actual Login ID ( orginal ID before the boot issues) 3) would I still have access to passwords saved in chorme and Installed softwares like MS Ofice ? 4) How is this method diffrent from using Rufus ? Thanks

Well yes and no. You can do that but windos encrypts all the data on your drive. So you can probably access it but you cant do anything with it

So, is the filesystem on the usb boot drive accessible like a normal flash drive to a computer that isn't booted from it ? What format is windows defaulting to on that initial boot ? Could you go stick that usbkey in a win/mac/linux and read and write , and always see the results when it does get booted ?

Rufus now allows you to install an image file as portable. They added a windows to go function.

I took the plunge and installed win10 2004 to the fastest USB 3.0 flash drive I had in my drawer. 404 read, 119 write using crystal disk mark. It installed to the drive just fine. Took a while. Set my BIOS to legacy and to boot to the flash drive. It booted and had to finish the installation. It seemed to work OK but had a lot of trouble with Edge. It kept "not responding". Had to use Chrome. That was a big improvement. I'm running a core i7 7th gen with 16 gigs of RAM. 250 mbps internet speed. My download speed dropped to 70 mbps using the flash drive. When I tried using my utility flash drive it wasn't detected for some reason. So It worked but not much speed. Maybe a faster drive would help. I wouldn't use it all the time. I'm going to try it on an old win7 computer I have just for the heck of it.

thanks for the help, ive created an 'upgrade pc" i can go and upgrade or repair peoples old pc's using it and wont have to worry about compatibility issues as worse comes to worse i can just chuck in their hard drives and maybe gpu and there's their upgrade. so its a fully functioning pc but with no storage. now i have means to run windows 10 off of my 128gb 80mbs usb and do benchmarks, hardware diagnosing ect. so thank you very much. all other tutorials i found dont include where to download wintousb as there's alot of virusy looking copycats of that.

Can I use an external SSD or external hard drive via USB C instead USB flash drive?

I am not wanting to use this for any kind of permanent use but I wanted some opinions on their speed in operation. What are the opinions on running this with a 2.0 flash drive, a 3.0 (in a 3.0 port of course - and will it operate on 3.0 as in does this OS file have the drivers to accomplish that or will it still be 2.0) or an ssd right to a sata port?

the last option you must select legacy. If you choose vhd or vhdx it will create the install on a virtual harddrive. and it will operate slow as hell. Just make sure you pick legacy at the last step!

is there legacy in every laptop? my dell n5010 does not have it in the bios settings. I did all this in an external drive but does not work..

I have been trying to install windows 7 onto a Seagate 4T hard drive that i took from my external enclosure because the usb power motherboard died but the drive was still good. No issues at all. I already installed win 11 on it. I am trying to install windows 7 on it. I am having a little trouble doing that. It installed. But wont get past the windows starting screen. It just does that breathing thing. Any help old greatly appreciated.

once its installed and running yes you can add pictures just like if it was a proper hard drive. unless you have pictures on your existing flash, then no it would erase during format. you could partition but then what's the point of unnecessary head ache. but i validate your question. you might not have another flash drive etc.

I would assume it gets treated as a regular installation so you would need a new product key just like you would on a new computer. Windows 10 doesn't need to be activated though and it's only a few cosmetic things that can't be altered if you don't activate it. It's not like with some previous versions of Windows that literally stop you from using it after 30 days.

It will only be as fast as the slowest device, so it will run at USB 2 speeds. You might have to test if its too slow to use.

I gave this a go, i have a work laptop but not my own. So I setup windows 10 on a usb3 128gb stick, pretty quick and from what I can tell leaves the laptops main drive alone. I did have to take some extra steps, first for whatever reason, when I connected the drive to laptop the first time it had issues with OOBD with not being connected to the internet. After doing some research and not finding anything useful I started again but booted my normal PC up with it (has ethernet cable). I completed the setup, setup my account then plugged into the laptop, but it wouldn't let me login (no internet and wouldn't accept passcode) so took back to original machine and setup a temp admin account with a password. Hindsight should have not set passcode until plugged into the laptop. I also had to download the wifi drivers for the laptop and put those on the USB.

Which one do you mean, 'It leaves the laptop's main Drivers alone' or 'it leaves the laptop's main HARD drive alone?'

Is this windows 10 installation lock to only one computer, Or can I move to Whatever machines available that day. I do have a full Windows 10 retail license available for this installation.

You can use it on any machine that supports Windows 10 and has USB 3.0 and greater (USB 2 is too slow, it won't work). You don't need to activate it - save your license for a standard PC installation of windows. Windows to go was designed for demonstrating, recovery, testing and fault finding (mainly in the server/enterprise field).
