Tried this as my last straw since I have nothing to lose anw (I had backed up the data before this incident). Took me 1,5 hours then it magically appeared again! If this works for you guys, as soon as the files open, backup all the data. In case your drive is actually physically broken Thank you thank you!!

    My system suddenly become unresponsive.. I had to force it off, but then I had checkdisk issues. Eventvwr shows: Volume C: (\Device\HarddiskVolume2) needs to be taken offline for a short time to perform a Spot Fix. Please run "CHKDSK /SPOTFIX" locally via the command line, or run "REPAIR-VOLUME " locally or remotely via PowerShell. Not sure if something caused the hang, that led to the power-off which caused the corruption, or if it the ssd drive is going bad that started it all. Anyhoot, now my Windows / Start menu won't work, and at least one of the applications doesn't start.. plus i have tons of "found.00x" folders in my c drive. I think I'm going to reimage the drive (foxclone).. but not sure how to check if physical health of the ssd is good. Any suggestions?

    I followed these instructions on a 3 year old 10TB Seagate hard drive. It took over 6 days to complete the chkdsk and did not work. Then I bought Wondershare RecoverIt. It took 8 days to run and claimed it successfully recovered over 3TB of the 5TB of data on the drive. There were also over 200 files with missing file names & over 5,000 files with missing paths. Not one file worked on the hard drive, nor on the target drive. Even the "successful" files were corrupted. I ran RecoverIt a second time with the same results that everything was corrupted. What a total waste of money!

    Looks like this process could take about 3 days for a 4TB external drive on USB2.0. I was (stupidly) transferring linux iso's to my external drive via a bootable linux live environment, running from USB via Ventoy. Pretty sure my PC ran out of RAM or had some sort of error happen. Screen and keyboard went blank during the copy process, but my external was still in busy mode. Waited several hours and forced a shut down. Ended up with bad sectors and unreadable areas on my external hdd. I would advise running a scandisk or chkdsk tool from a 3rd party app (I used MiniTool Partition Wizard, but there are others out there that include such functionality), as it finished in around 8 hours. I just wasn't sure if the free edition actually marked the bad sectors and attempted to recover the data. So resorted to chkdsk to be doubly sure. I don't really care about the data being lost (that I was copying), but the health and future reliability of the hdd is very important. There are bootable utilities that might perform this function at a faster rate as well. What would really speed things up would be if I either had USB3.0 or could attach it via SATA/eSATA port.

Around 700-800 LBA errors found. Bad sectors found. And i can't even reach files in my SSD. It says "RAW" format. So, NTFS turned RAW format or it caused by SSD error. Hi there, thank you for your question! Yes, it is normal not to be allowed access to an external hard drive while chkdsk is operating on it. When you run chkdsk on a drive, it checks the file system for errors and attempts to repair any issues that it finds. During this process, the drive is locked and cannot be accessed by other programs or processes. This is done to prevent any data corruption or loss that could occur if other programs were trying to access the drive at the same time.

    Does chkdsk /r rewrite the data in good sectors back to where it read it from (like Spinrite does) in order to 'refresh' storage of that data on the disk?

  • @RecoveritDataRecoverySoftware

    @RecoveritDataRecoverySoftware

    Hi there, thank you for your question! The chkdsk /r command in Windows does not rewrite data in good sectors to refresh storage, unlike Spinrite, which claims to do so. chkdsk /r primarily scans the disk for bad sectors, attempts to recover readable data from them, marks them as bad to prevent future use, and relocates recoverable data to healthy sectors, focusing on file system integrity and addressing issues related to corruption.

    Hi there, thank you for your question! You need to allocate the disk and assign a drive letter. To do this, right-click on the unallocated space in Disk Management and select "New Simple Volume." Follow the wizard and assign a drive letter to the external hard drive. If the option to create a new simple volume is grayed out, initialize the disk first by right-clicking on the unallocated space and selecting "Initialize Disk." Choose the partition style and click OK. Note that creating a new volume will format the drive and erase any existing data on it. Therefore, it's important to try to recover any important data on the drive before formatting it.

  • @terrapinflyer273

    I've encountered this issue caused by various reasons. Usually with microSD cards. Haven't dealt with it in a long time, but - try 7disk (or 7data/testdisk7 WIP? One of those... I think.) it's used in forensic data recovery/repair. It has the ability to seek out and restore partition tables whether it be FAT, NTFS, Apple, or Linus file systems. It is a bit tricky to use, but relatively straight forward once you figure out the menu prompts. I would recommend seeking out a tutorial or official documentation on it before trying to use it. It's saved my butt quite a few times, but unfortunately RAW format isn't always recoverable. Once a storage medium becomes corrupted, the best thing you can do is not use it. Or do everything to avoid more data being written to it. As that data can overwrite the MBR which stores data on the partition type and structure.

This is important for performing certain tasks like disk checking. In the Command Prompt window, you can type "chkdsk" followed by the drive letter you want to check. For example, if you want to check drive C:, you would type: chkdsk C: Press Enter, and the system will start checking the specified drive for errors.

  • @RecoveritDataRecoverySoftware

    @RecoveritDataRecoverySoftware

    28 күн бұрын

    Hi there, thank you for your question! /f fixes any structural issues with the file system and directory. It corrects inconsistencies between them, /r searches for corrupted parts of the physical hard drive (while also running /f). It attempts to recover data from damaged areas and relocate it to undamaged portions of the drive, /x dismounts a drive so that it can be checked and fixed. Running this command also includes the /f functionality. I would recommend using all the commands.

    Hi there, Thank you for your question. To fix this issue, you need to run the utility in elevated mode, which means running it with administrator privileges. To do this, right-click on the utility and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu. If the disk is still locked by another process, you will need to close that process or wait for it to finish before attempting to access the disk. If you are still unable to access the disk, you may need to take ownership of the disk or adjust the permissions for the file or folder you are trying to access.

    a drive with failing sectors is sometimes (but certainly not always) in a proverbial death spiral, with potentially only limited hours of functional operating time left....; wasting those hours on a chkdsk is indeed on option.

  • @RecoveritDataRecoverySoftware

    @RecoveritDataRecoverySoftware

    Hi there, thank you for your question. If a hard drive is exhibiting signs of failing sectors and is potentially in a critical state, it's important to prioritize data recovery and migration to a new drive rather than running extensive disk checks like chkdsk. Running chkdsk on a failing drive could potentially worsen the situation or accelerate the failure process.

You need to open the Command Prompt with administrator privileges by right-clicking on "Command Prompt" in the Start menu and selecting "Run as administrator." If prompted, schedule the disk check to run on the next system restart by typing "Y" and pressing Enter. Ensure that no other processes or programs are actively using the disk, and then restart your computer to allow chkdsk to check and repair the disk, taking into account that it may result in data loss, so back up important data before proceeding.

    Hi there, thank you for your question. The error message indicates that the volume is write-protected, preventing the disk check operation. To resolve this, you can try the following steps: Run Command Prompt as Administrator: Press Win + X and select "Command Prompt (Admin)" or "PowerShell (Admin)." If using PowerShell, you may need to run the following command instead: chkdsk /f C: (replace C: with the letter of the drive you want to check). Check Registry Settings: Open the Registry Editor by pressing Win + R, typing regedit, and pressing Enter. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies. Look for the WriteProtect DWORD value. If it's set to 1, change it to 0.

    Hi there, Thank you for your question. The parameters f, r, and x have the following meanings: /f: This parameter tells CHKDSK to fix any errors it finds on the disk, including bad sectors. It will also attempt to recover any readable information from the bad sectors and move it to a good location on the disk. /r: This parameter tells CHKDSK to locate bad sectors on the disk and recover any readable information. It will also mark any bad sectors as unusable to prevent data from being written to them in the future. /x: This parameter tells CHKDSK to dismount the volume before beginning the scan. This is necessary because CHKDSK cannot repair a disk that is currently in use. By dismounting the volume, CHKDSK ensures that no programs are accessing the disk during the repair process.
